Title: What word do you typically use for "finishing" a game?
Post by: The Sceneman on February 25, 2010, 04:40:18 AM
Completed? Beat? Finished? Platinimed?  Owned? Raped?

I use the word "clocked" a lot. Is this word exclusive to where I live? Everyone uses it here. Its weird because Ive been using it since I was a kid ("clocking" Alex Kidd in Miracle World was a schoolyard achievement) but I never seen that shit used on forums ever.

I dunno this is probably an ass of a thread but was just curious to get this shit out there.

Depends on the type of game.  If it's something that I'm never gonna play again I'll probably say "finished" but if it's like an rpg or something where it behooves you to play through it again I guess I say "beat" or "finished my first run through."

I beat or finished it. I would guess this is what 99.9% of people say

Mostly "beat", but sometimes I might say "finished".

I've never used "clocked" before, though.  :lol

I've never heard clocked mean anything other than "punched."

I say "finish" when I'm done with the game's story or main mode, but "complete" if I get it to 100% in the Stats or max out the Achievements.

"beat"

"finished" is also used, "cleared" less so

NEVER heard "clocked," did you grow up in a coal mining town?

nah, just New Zealand. Its really commonly used here and I have lived in both the biggest cities here.

I have no idea of the origins of the term either. Im working on clocking Mass Effect for the 4th time  :D

We used to say "clocked" in the 80s and 90s as well.  While it could be an Australian and NZ thing, I suspect it's more likely a British thing and we picked it up from mags like CVG and Mean Machines.

I just say "beat" now.

Clocked sounds like one of those terms out of touch old people use, like calling games nintendo tapes or calling controllers paddles.

I don't remember.  In the Heavy Rain thread I said "I enjoyed it".  I think I normally say "I'm done" or "finished", but it doesn't make sense since I still play after that.

Does anyone say "AND THE CREDITS ROLL"? I remember seeing people say it on gaf.  I hate that.

On some forum some years ago, IGN or GAF, the word "solved" was used a lot in a thread similar to this one, as if the game were a problem of some sort.

As for me, "beat" or "finished" is descriptive enough.

Thinking about it, "beat" would seem to indicate the game and I were in some sort of competition against one another. So maybe "finished" is more appropriate? On the other hand, for difficult games (or higher difficulty levels, as the case may be), perhaps "beat" is warranted after all.

Eh, whatever.
