At least you'll make it through Heavy Rain ok.
at least movies still seem to work.
A wide rash of game-crashing errors is spreading among the PS3-owning community at the moment, most of which can be chalked up to a 8001050F error code. This has led to a variety of unfortunate side-effects for those affected, including corrupted trophy information and an inability to access the PSN. When combined, those two issues prevent players from launching certain games, such as Heavy Rain, without being kicked back to the XMB.
We've contacted Sony to find out what's causing the issue, and when we can expect to get back to chasing down the Origami Killer. He might just be able to make a clean getaway while we suffer through this downtime.
Update: Sony has acknowledged the issue, and is "looking into it." We've yet to hear an official word on what the problem is, though it seems to be a bit larger than just the PSN. Owners of PS3 Phats are reporting that the date on their console has reverted to 12/31/1999, which is likely the cause of the data-corrupting errors. Some Phat-owners have reported receiving the errors while their console was offline, which is upsetting, to say the least. We'll let you know when we hear official word from Sony.
What happened?
A bug in the software calendar affecting only (some?) PS3 Fat models fucked up everything.
How do I fix it?
You can't.
Can Sony fix it?
Hopefully with a firmware update. Unless the bug is in the "hardware clock" itself.
if you have a fat and it's disconnected from the net before you turn it on you'll probably still run into issues.
I think this is Sony's secret way of disabling backwards compatibility.
At least you'll make it through Heavy Rain ok.

my 60GB launch PS3 is affected by this crap. Can't play any PS3 games. It still plays blu-ray movies and PS2 games though.
well, I'm not gonna turn it on until it's fixed. Hopefully before GoW3.
I just checked and XBL still seems to be running fine.

XBL is fine. I just watched Big Lebowski in HD over XBL.
Wait a sec. How long is this going to take? I mean this shit IS going to be fixed, right? I was playing WKC just last night. I don't give a flying fuck about trophies or what not, I just don't want a 500 dollar DVD player sitting underneath my TV.
360 FTW I guess.

It's Monday morning in Japan where the firmware updates are made, so they'll probably fix it by the end of the day.
And yeah, I hope we get free stuff out of this!
what was the deal with Undertow again?
some of the (unpaid) damage control i have seen about this is just :boggleI think it's a little too early to pass judgement on this either way until we know what kind of fix is in store. It could be a small problem for all we know (quick fix within a day) or it could be more severe (like XBOX360 problems).

This error is clearly part of the genius marketing behind Heavy Rain. The developers and Sony want to know how you feel when you cannot experience playing games on your PS3. It's a brand new experience unto itself; truly it is heavy rain for the consumer.Taking a page from the book of Microsoft then?

I've had to replace my PS3 AND 360 multiple times.
Yeah, I've had good luck too. My launch 360 died after 3 years and 1 month of service (which seems excellent for a 2005 360). That's the only failure I've had this gen.I've had to replace my PS3 AND 360 multiple times.
Wow, seriously? :lol
I never understood the "I've been through 546563 X360's/Ps3's" comments.
Is it just bad luck, or don't you ever take care of your consoles? :P
I've "only" had one X360 and even a Wii break down on me this gen. No Ps3 casualty yet. Maybe because I more careful with it.

Sony has just issued a stark warning against connecting any PS3 to PSN on its DevNet.
Said the firm on the developer-only resource just now: “We would also recommend not connecting any consumer units to the PSN to the network for the remainder of today.”
Hey, wouldn't this effect game development too?

It's not a firmware bug. It's a problem with the system clock on the old non-slim models. They cannot connect to PSN for updates, so even if Sony pushed a firmware update out there would be no way for people to download it to their system.

Just as an FYI you can actually download and system updates off a USB drive; that's how I usually update since the PSN server's always slow as hell.
Of course I don't trust the average PS3 consumer to even understand how to do this.
I don't think that's true, actually. Updates to games still work. You can still download patches and, I assume, firmware updates. I don't think it IS the firmware, but people could still download updates if they needed to.So how does Sony intend to fix a hardware issue over the internet when the console itself can't connect? hmmmmm

Well the gist is that the ARM SYSCON CPU that is used to power up the front panel of the ps3, that is responsible for doing things like sleep mode, eject, RTC etc. Is an old batch that sony picked up from the shelf like other manufacturers that has that calendar year bug regarding feburary 29th on certain periods. Causing the ps3 system clock and the real time clock to desync, messing up security measures like Digital Rights management software and sometimes games that relies on clocks for whatever reason. As well as signing up to the playstation network... This CPU is always on even when your PS3 isn't plugged
This problem is also happening with various of test Ps3 models, particulary the ones that has the emotion engine cpu/gpu for ps2 dev.
The Slims ps3s aren't affected because they use a newer up to date revision on the syscon cpu that fixes this bug.
A quick way to fix this is to remove the RTC battery for at least 5-10 min and plug it back in, you will see the date and time reset, and voila...
BTW all this was quoted from some ps3 hardware gurus and tested by various of peeps on efnet, all thanks to them for the information
One cannot wait to hear Sony's excuse for this one, They might play innocent for using off the shelve parts and blame manufacturers
In all seriousness this will probably be fixed soon. I'm riding along the laugh train with the rest of you but it seems pretty likely this issue will either fix itself once the day rolls by (i.e. the system no longer believes its the 29th) or Sony will put out some sort of patch-fix.
I'm far more interested in what kind of apology Sony will put forth.
So ... right when Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII, and God of War III come out, early adopters' PS3s break down, and anyone who wants to play those games immediately now has to go buy a Slim.

Our previous advice still stands: We hope to have the problem solved within 24 hours (about 21 now, if you've been counting ) and you should avoid using your console until then.
I have given my phone number out to everyone who will be "in the know" about further updates on this issue. Our teams across SCE are working flat-out to fix the problem for you. Should anything come through, either myself or one of the moderators on shift tonight will post the update for you.
I'll also be jumping on and checking PSN tonight from midnight with my own console, just in case I'll let you know the results.

There were stupid pirates being fucked over.
Are people really freaking out this much? If it's related to a time bug, it'll be the GMT that it is all calculated from.
PST is GMT-8, so that's why they are saying wait until 4 PM, where it'll be March 2nd at GMT +/- 0 and no longer affected.

It's really the only traditional JRPG this generation that's worth playing.
They're both good, but they're not exactly what I'm looking for.
I really want to play Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, they appear to be the closest we'll get this generation to old school turn-based JRPGs.
I'm sure I would. I LOVE archaic turn-based JRPG battle systems. The real time action RPG-esque combat is fun I guess, but it drives me batty. I want control over everyone, not just a single character.

You dont know what you want. Thats why you picked the triple.
Demon's Souls is pretty cool and completely different than anything else out there. Hard as fuck all, but I still totally dig it. I just wish they'd make a straight up King's Field game using that engine. Love me some King's Field.
Valkyria Chronicles puts me to sleep though. I just couldn't get into it at all, but then I'm not one for SRPGs anyway.
Again, Vesperia wins for old school JRPG goodness this gen, imo.
If you aren't into japafaggotry it is very hard to get through VC. I did enjoy LO though so what do I konw.

Dodging bullets.
I got my 360 back in less than two weeks, from ordering the coffin to the return.same here
Sony didn't fix shit. The RTC thinks it is now March 1st. The system understands March 1st to be a real date, so the system works. Sony just sat on their butts and waited for it to fix itself. I'm sure it would have taken them much longer then 24 hours for a fix, so now they can take their time and get a solution so this will not happen again in 2014.
Yeah, pretty much. Kinda uneventful but it does create a compelling message:
The PS3 is forever stuck in the past. Always a day late trailing the successes of other systems.
