People actually buy Windows? I thought it was an urban legend.

I don't even understand the thread title. "RC" is release candidate, isn't it? Aren't there already millions of copies of Win7 out in the wild?

The "RC" was free for people to install and test, but the pay-the-piper timer expires this week.

"RC" was build 7100, retail was build 7600. It's mostly trivial cosmetic changes between the two but they're absolutely different versions.

Selling licences to PC manufacturers and companies I think.
I think MS manages to sell a few retail copies.

Microsoft: 100 million copies of Vista sold at retail

Microsoft has announced a new sales milestone for Windows Vista: 100 million retail copies sold.

Probably zero in Europe though.

yeah I remember Alan Sugar lambasting Microsoft because he had to pay "fifty-quid" for every machine he built with Windows inside.

I was like 'wtf!?' - it can't really be that much!

anyway, whatever happened to Amstrad LOL

As a fan of Groundhog Day, I see no need to do this.  Wouldn't it be cool if you could get a fresh start on your life every two hours?

I paid $25 for Windows 7 Professional. Totally worth it to not worry about cracks for the next 4 years.

I will say, the retail version of Windows 7 is even better than the release candidate.
