When I got this computer I was told I'd receive copy of Windows 7 when I bought it. I tried to receive my copy when Windows 7 launched and they said my computer was illegible for the offer.
Thing is, I got the windows 7 trial evaluation. And it's now out of days so I have to uninstall. Normally I wold, but I have an issue: my backup cd with windows vista is in another state.
So my question is this: if I format, will the computer automatically install Vista? After all, it came with Vista pre-installed. Or will I need the backup cd?
I'm going to get Windows 7 pro from MS' site via the student discount (they're selling these at 60 dollars with the discount!) but in the mean time, I want to get this trial off my computer.
Help? Is my computer fucked until I buy W7 or get that backup cd in my hands?

I partitioned so I'm going to try this.

You're right. Oops!

If the computer came with a recovery partition, you could try booting off it when your computer first boots up (usually have to hit one of the F# keys). If you don't have a recovery partition, I would use Ubuntu as a temporary solution (www.ubuntu.com). You can run it off the CD without installing anything.

Do you have a sticker on the case that has the Windows serial number on it? If you do I'd try grabbing a torrent of whatever version Vista you had and burning the ISO to a disc. Then just format the PC with that disc.

Dammit juniors get an avatar so we can identify you more easily.

Thanks for the tips.
I know someone with the SAME Asus computer. I'm going to ask them if they have their recovery disc. Will I be able to use my serial number on that disc?

arent you in college? get an MSDN key, or talk to some computer geek hookup there.

As long as the OS is the same then I think it should work.

I am. I didn't know you could use ANY copy of the OS so long as it's the same kind. I thought you need that exact cd. Or something.

Or do this.

$64.95 for Windows 7 Professional if you don't have access to MSDN.

Since he has the same computer I don't see why it won't be Vista Home Premium.

Hey prices on ebay are around 35 bucks I thought we have the friend discount going on? :lol I honestly could use one or two Licenses for my laptops though. I'm sick of Xp!

I'd do 1 for 1. That's what friend discounts are for right

My wife managed to make some kind of bootable CD so that she wouldn't have to wipe and reinstall

Good news: I dled a program that lets me switch partitions. I used my recovery partition and now I'm back on Vista. Finally got the Windows 7 trial off.
Bad news: I backed up my restore partition on my external hd. I accidentally didn't click "unallocated" so now overwrote my external hd's files with...restore files. I've lost all of my music, animu, pictures, and more. I'm distraught. Thankfully I put my most important files on my flash drive.
Worse news: Vista sucks.

I'm really bummed out. Like, really depressed because of stuff being gone. :-\

I'm more distraught over the music and some of my more personal stuff like photographs and etc.

Vista :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Internet connection randomly disconnects. :-\ Or rather, it's connected but I can't use the internet yet ps3 and other computer connect just perfect.
:-\
Good news, though, found a program that let me recover my old data on my external hd!

What program did you use? I would like to know because I have to help my friend with the same problem, his win7 trial has expired also.

He's going to need a dvd-burner. Does he have one?
-
Yes.
-
Good. Link him to this:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=125071
I suggest doing this: dl the program provided in the link, then burn it to disc as directed via imageburn or alcohol 120%. When the bootup screen loads, press F2. It'll take you to a menu, change slots and put cd-dvd drive ahead of hd like described. Then will load up the cd after exiting the menu.
Then you'll be able to change partitions. You can change your partition to partition 1 on your hd, which is likely the recovery.
Save, and reboot and it'll look up the recovery partition, continue and you've got a clean slate, no more W7 trial.
