I got a bunch of One Piece toys out a crane machine in Seoul yesterday and the look neat! So now I wanna watch/read One Piece, but I have no idea where to start. Should I begin with the manga and then the anime? ARe they seperate or do they follow the same story?
-
We have a thread:

I'd suggest reading the manga as it's faster. Pirated manga chapters tend to have horrible translations, though, especially early ones. Or you could buy the official releases from Viz.
Or you could watch the anime, and then read the manga when you're caught up with the anime. You can do this because the anime is a direct adaptation of the manga, for the most part. www.onepieceofficial.com has the first 100 episodes of the anime online, but the anime takes a while to get going whereas the manga is far more consistent.
Overall, I'd suggest the manga, although the anime is no slouch. It's the only anime I regularly watch anymore.

That site just redirects to Funimation. :(
Anyway, I was gonna ask in the thread but I was scared of spoilers and its GIGANTICNESS.
-
huh?
onepieceofficial, com should go right to the Funimation OP site. =/

I started watching last year. Go with the anime as it is really good. You can stream it online from a lot of different places.
To be honest I tried watching it about two years ago and stopped after the first 13 episodes. It takes a while for it to get it's legs but once it does it is awesome.
-
I found a torrent of the first 500 issues. No English bookstores around here :(
-
Is the 4kids dub any good or should I hunt down subs?
-
4kids dub sucks, funimation dub is gewd.
-
Also, it's on Hulu.com , I just need to proxy in
-
Please stick with it. The anime is slow in terms of pacing at the beginning.

That was fucking easy.

Does hulu have the first 100 episodes up like onepieceofficial.com?

It has every episode. It says they post the subbed 2 weeks after the Japanese airdate.
-
My proxy no longer works for Hulu :(
-
Onepieceofficial airs the episodes subbed about an hour after it airs in Japan in something. I though it'd be faster.

Yeah, but it just redirects me to a funimation site. I think it's a proxy/Outisde the US thing
-
:(
GO with the manga then.

OPO works if I proxy in. I kinda wanna DL them, but Download helper won'tpick up on it. Blehhhh

Anime first, manga once you catch up.
I really need to get back to the anime. I haven't watched it since Ace vs. Blackbeard. :(
-
Coincidentaly, I've decided to get into recently too. Its one of the few animes I can stand. There's a lot of material produced, so don't expect to be up to date for a very, very long time. Manga wise, I think I got up to croc vs luffy. I think I'm going to transition to the show because the dude's art style wreaks havoc on my low attention span.
-
That means you missed thriller bark in the anime, which is nothing substantial aside from the amazing final fight. Start with Shabondy Island and continue from there.
onepieceofficial has Shabondy Island up to where Japan is at (anime wise). I think 392 is where Shabody Island starts.
-
Surprised there aren't more torrents. Le sigh. Looks like I'll start with the Manga and try to figure out a Plan B soon.

I love the manga, but I have the same problem. :lol

That's good to know seeing as how I hate Halloween or haunted house themes in anything.

Manga
For long series, the manga is always better (though it's usually better regardless for quality) because instead of taking 500 hours to watch, you can read the same amount in like 50.
-
GD try the site i posted.
Also this weeks ep was so fucking good.

Success!
F_Mike, I tried your site. Slow, low-qual DLs, plus I wanna stick them on my iPod. But thank you!

Anime is just more enjoyable imo. Color, music, voices and shit moving is more fun than still pics + text. The One Piece anime is really long, but it never gets boring and there's a bunch of filler arcs that you can skip.

It is endlessly entertaining, I agree.
And there's scenes like this which are better in the anime than in the manga.

I think they both compliment each other perfectly, honestly. Favorite manga ever and the most entertaining anime ever, either way, it's win-win.
-
Yeah, that arc is what started my One Piece addiction. I always tell people to at least watch up until there before they dismiss it.
-
I'm not saying the anime is bad. It's just with long series it doesn't make sense time-wise to go with the anime.
I will never ever watch Ippo, but I might read the manga one day.
I think my anime limit now a days is 50eps. Will not watch any show longer than that.

Ippo anime shits all over Ippo manga.
Also, it's just like with manga. If you're caught up it's a non-issue.

yep.

Time doesn't matter if you're actually enjoying it. Himu is right about the Ippo anime, at least the original one.
-
I plan on watching the one piece anime some day. Whenever I get caught up I'll switch to the manga. At my pace it seems like I will start when the series has finished.
About Hajime no Ippo, yeah, the anime is a lot better than the manga.
One nice thing is that I got a One Piece game for the Wii as a gift a year or two ago. I've been planning on playing it whenever I finish the anime.
-
Just watched Episode 1. Pretty good! I also got another toy out of the crane machine. It's some Reindeer guy with a hat? It's solar powered and he bobs his head all day.

Pic of toys plz.
You actually liked episode 1? I'm a huge fan of both the manga and the anime and I think the first episode of the show is mostly bad. I thought it'd be better if episode one was the flashback (which is seen in ep 4).
If you liked episode 1, then you're in for a treat then.

It was kind of slow at the start. It was like LOST- Someting exciting is happening somewhere else, so we'd better spend as much time in someplace boring as possible! Like theres a fucking super pirate invasion on deck, so lets' spend 20 minutes in the pantry talking about shit. That kind of dragged, but then there was a cool fight! It also kind of supposes a familiarity with the characters that I didn't quite have, so maybe was paying double attention.
And yeah, I rea dthe first issue of the Manga and I thought maybe I was watching episode 2 or something.
-
I have no clue why they decided to go with Alvida as the first episode rather than the flashback as seen in the manga. The flashback is the perfect set up as it introduces you to Luffy, Shanks, the hat, and his goal all in one episode and it created a bond with Luffy from the get go. That way, when he fights Alvida the next chapter, you're rooting for him to see how far he's grown since being a little kid. By making Alvida the first episode, there's little to no attachment, single-handedly making it a boring first episode.
-
2nd episode was okay, but it does thta Dragon Ball thing where its like "Talk talk talk TIME FOR SOME ACTION OH WAIT THE PISODE IS OVER TUNE IN NEXT TIME"
-
:(
GO with the manga then.

This brohammer. DO EET!

same. i didn't really groove on one piece until the arlong arc and loguetown.
-
Just finished Episode 5. Pretty good! I really like stories about journeys and adventures and characters (Does that make sense?), so this is pressing all my buttons. AT this point it feels a little bit like, "Well, we'll just make up some characters!", I don't feel like I know about the etsablished universe to quite connect, but I'm really enjoying it.
-
You don't really feel like you get the universe until you get into the grandline.
-
Just finished the Kuro arc. Pretty good! I kind of hate the way it draaaaaaaaaaaaags out the battles, but that's anime. I really love the way it gives you a rich background for characters and their motivations, I just wish they'd dole them out more evenly. You tend to get a HUGE AMOUNT of backstory all at once and then none for awhile. I am really enjoying it so far.
I'm hoping that we get to see a lot of B-plot characters again in the future (Coby, Kaya etc.). It'd be a shame if they just dissapeared with so much invested in them already.
-
Cody comes back.
-
Characters like Coby come back but people like Kaya are make appearances when something big in the plot happens.
Sounds like you're like me GilloD. I seem to be one of the few people who were addicted to One Piece starting on the first chapter. Lots of others, it takes them up until Arlong for them to "get" it. But I found it enjoyable from the get go. If you're enjoying it now...oh boy.
-
Just started the Arlong arc. Like 2 or 3 episodes in? I'm really digging it- I like the way the crew got split up so you don't just have or two characters doing the heavy lifting. As always, the backstories are really fascinating and the world keeps getting bigger. Hawkeyes was awesome. Episode 33 START. Also, Ig ot more capsule toys and a stuffed Tony Tony Choppa from a crane machine! Will take pics because I am now a japafag

-
Arlong arc is AWESOME. Pretty dark stuff. Nami :(
I think I'm on episode 40 (Luffy is still passed out, Gen and Nokji are trying to revive him and Sanji is getting his ass kicked underwater)
-
I kind of petered out during the Arlong arc and gave up for a wek or so. I wasn't totally in love with it. I really liked seeing the show do a serious tragedy/drama, but then it lapsed into the like ELEVㄸN EPISODES OF POINTLESS COMBAT thing. So, I took a break. Then I watched like 12 episodes in one day. Whoops!
The end was pretty cool with Luffy destroying Arlong Park. But I really liked what followed- I know a lot of Loguetown is 'filler', but I liked seeing what drives those characters and I like seeing them in quiet moments away from TREASURE and COMBAT. I also liked the insinuation of larger forces at work and the expansion of the One Piece universe. Up until now it's been gimmicky pirates and fairly human struggles, but in the run up to the Grand Line we're getting a look at a bigger picture. I'm psyched!
I just finished the spisode where they find the mysterious little girl. I wanna see where this goes.
-
little girl? that's one nasty filler.
-
little girl? that's one nasty filler.
What?
-
Yeah, mysterious little tells it's Apis. Which is filler and not canon.
-

It's just to keep them from getting to GRAND-OO LINE? :(
-
Going back to and watching the Loguetown episodes is cool after getting a lot farther in the anime.
-

basically and also its possible that it would get close to the manga storywise, so they had to increase that gap
-
This Dragon thing should have just been a movie. I was skipping like 5 minute chunks of it. Totally silly- WE ARE ON ISLAND A NOW WE MUST GO TO ISLAND B AND OH LOOK IT WAS ON ISLAND A ALL ALONG LOL
There are a few really great character moments (Sanji & Zoro washing dishes), but this is BAD filler. I know Loguetown was filler, but we got to learn about the characters and see them on their own. Here it's tyhe equivalent of busy work.
-
Loguetown is no filler.
-
Loguetown is no filler.
The Usopp 'duel' episode and Sanji's cook off are totally filler. Also, the way in which Zoro got new swords bothered me. "lol i found an amazing sword in the bargin bin and oh whats that i can have ur amazing sword for free? great". They couldn't like. Find a treasure map or find it in the belly of a beast or something?
-
oh yeah, those were filler for sure.
as for zoro, he will get a new sword later in a way like that.
-
the zoro ep is from the manga. the other two are filler.

It's cause Zoro is the man! :punch

What? the zoro getting his sword was good since it setup more events (mainly with that marine girl he now avoids like the plague). Plus his method of getting the sword was badass and crazy as hell.
As said the ussop duel and Sanji's cook off are filler but it is said that ussop's is partly canon in how he got his aiming visors/glasses.

Liking everything in the Grand Line so far. Laboon and Whiskey Peak were really well paced- One intro ep, one or two action eps and a conclusion. That dragon shit dragged out for like 7 boring episodes and all it did was delay getting to Grand Line. Filler max. It was nice to see Zoro unload on someone- It's been awhile since we've seen our heroes really just dominate someone.
