confused renfair disasters and some brother (himumumumu?) with a hilarious fro and some kind of fuzzy nub coming out of the top of his head. Is there a redeemable context to this image or it sort of the visual representation of just how badly tuned to non-FF diehard sensibilities this game is?

I have no problem with Nomura designs. He is a excellent character designer.

I just posted something about this in the gaf thread, but I am getting the feeling more and more that people attuned to western tastes simply hate the unrealistic. They hate using their imaginations, they hate colors, they hate positivism.

Maybe this all stems from the western viewpoint that those things (colors, "happy" aka happy meal, dreams, fantasy, etc...) are all associated with "kids" stuff. And adults are looked down upon if they enjoy those. Whereas in Japan adults enjoy them just as much as kids and it's accepted as normal.

Nobody would ever dress like those characters. Not as their everyday wear, not as their "funky style" clothes, not as their "costume" for monster slaying. There's no reason anyone would ever dress like that for any reason. The outfits make no sense and just looking at them makes me vomit. They're designed as ways to sell silver necklace accessories and cosplay fetishists. Vanille's outfit, in particular, with all of its rows of beads, is a cosplayer's nightmare/wet dream.

This doesn't have to do with kids/adults or positive/negative, it just has to do with "makes a single lick of goddamned sense" versus "I drew this on the back of a napkin in between sleeping with translators and now you guys have to model it."

And why do all the weapons collapse? The designs don't follow any rhyme or reason or culture or ANYTHING.

Love or hate the designs FFVII, VIII, and IX - the characters at least all look like they're from the same game. XIII's cast is completely incoherent.

The characters here, from what I'm reading in this thread, basically are the designs that they wanted to have and don't seem to have any consistency in appearance between the cast members nor do they appear (again, from what I've read) to match any particular design aesthetic other than 'generic final fantasy'.

But I reserve the right to be totally wrong since I haven't touched the game. ;)

I don't think she's a great character, but I didn't have a problem with her until much later in the game. She was just a quirky, cheerful girl at the start and that was fully acceptable.

using your imagination? the game is so excruciatingly explicative in its detail -- characters, locales, text, and otherwise -- that there's NO ROOM for imagination! it's a fucking museum game; you wander halls and ogle other folks' artwork.

japan is in a permanent state of social cognitive dissonance. of course they prefer the fantastic and childlike; otherwise, they'd collectively commit suicide out of mass depression if the veil of oversaturated colors, childhood dreams, and half-naked loli tarts were ripped away from them.

PAL version isn't compatible with JP 360s.

I'm about 12 hours in and I think the game's great so far. The low point has easily been the junkyard since it just drags on and isn't a very interesting place. The areas after it are way better.

As someone mentioned relative to a final fantasy game it hasn't reviewed that well. And even for any high profile game of its stature it hasn't reviewed especially well.

Brutal Legend which a lot of people consider a miss has a metacritic of 83. Halo ODST which a lot of people also consider a miss sits at 83 also. Final Fantasy is sitting at 82 right around that company.

Of course those scores are inflated but all videogame review scores are.

The best way to judge a mega franchise is not by the total score but by how it scores relative to how past entries have scored. That's how you know what the general consensus of the review community was relative to a particular entry in a franchise.

Final Fantasy X by comparison has a metacritic of 92. As does Final Fantasy 12.

Of course this is even if someone takes reviews "seriously" rather than just taking them as a collection of opinions and any individual can have his own opinion which is the healthy method of looking at reviews.

I suppose some people like it. I'm not a huge fan, but there are a surprisingly large number of people that seem to be really digging it...including some which have never played JRPGs before.

Of course, JRPGs have been pretty shit this generation overall. While I certainly don't love it, I do like it much more than most other JRPGs outside of Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia. It does some things really well (streamlined battles, NPCs saying things without needed a text box, extremely fast loading, great presentation, and one of the best JRPG soundtracks yet), but it's just too limited overall. I think some people are praising it a bit too much...but I also think the general opinion around here was a bit overly negative. So, a 7 or an 8 seems about right to me.
