Amazon didn't have release date delivery for it so I won't have it until Friday.  :(

I picked it up this afternoon.  The game rang up at $59.99, and I had to have a little "debate" with the Gamestop clerk about the reserve price being $54.99.  Got it for that price in the end.

Since I still have yet to play through Yakuza 1 and 2, I don't know what to do.  Started playing Yakuza 2 last night, but when it got to the recap movie of the first game's events, I started to want to play it from the beginning instead of skipping the original.  And then there's the PS2 games looking like total crud on my my HDTV.  Yakuza 2 has a widescreen option but no 480P mode?  Damn it, Sega.

So I dunno; maybe it's time to do a Yakuza gaming marathon.

Yeah I was feeling that at #2
feeling it more at Kenzan
feeling it even more at the first chapter of #3

They milked this franchise too much, too quickly.

Skip them and just play #3.  I don't know how it ranks in the series, but at least you won't have the burnout from playing the others.

Was thinking about running through the first two, skipping all the extra stuff, then taking my time with the third game.

They milked this franchise too much, too quickly.

The problem isn't the milking. The problem is that the series takes place in the same location with the same characters, with similar activities and the same battle system.

Stories in these games are MGS-flavor wacky jappy shit.  Great stuff.

I'll play Yakuza 3 eventually but I know there were some situations in Yakuza 1 that carried into Yakuza 2.  There are reoccurring characters even in the side-missions.

As for the game sand how much they're different, there isn't much change between them but I'm fine with that.  Biggest change between Yakuza 1 and 2 in the core game is much better combat.  Yakuza 3 seems to just have the "tech" upgrade and what comes with it (free camera as you run around, better graphics, etc).  Judging from the Yakuza 4 demo, the combat and camera is quite a bit better than Yakuza 3 without even taking into account the three new, different playable characters.

I don't mind that they mostly stay the same because it's a guilty pleasure game.  A new game is a new story, sub-missions, arcade games, etc. to go through.  You mostly go through the same motions each time.  Reminds me a bit like the Castlevania GBA/DS games.  I enjoyed Aria, DoS, and PoR even though they're basically SOTN.  Very unambitious but I was content with playing one every year.  It's like comfort gaming.  Then OoE came out and sucked hard.

Yeah, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't be torn on which ones to play.  The story seems interesting, for once.

Are you serious? The stories are terrible.

Fat guy monitors a whole city district in an underground brothel with 999 video cams.

The stories are entertaining, but the stories are not good in the least. They're trash.

Thankfully the games have good characters to back it up.

don't get me wrong, I thought the plot in #2 was fairly lolz.  But just because it's ridiculous doesn't make it bad if it's entertaining and the cast rocks.

There's a line between entertaining and being...actually, you know, good.

How is that not hard to grasp?

The cast in a lot of games are good, but simply having a good cast does not equate to good storytelling.

MGS1-3/Portable Ops are good stories.
They are entertaining and you enjoy watching them play out even if they are ridiculous and full of lolz moments. 

Like swaggaz says, how is RGG any different?

These were a few of the side quests I actually did in RGG3. They feature characters that were in the first two games and Kenzan... damn shame that they were removed as they're wacky jappy fanservice.

I day 1-ed it, but Yakuza 2 has been on my backlog forever (like about 40% of my previous gen library) and I picked it up again last week, it really is pretty damn awesome.  I'll finish it first.

Also, there's that I either need to upgrade my hard disk, or clear a lot of stuff for Y3.  The one-two punch of Heavy Rain and Yakuza 3 would pretty much decimate all the saved space I have on my system.

I hope Sega does well enough on this to continue taking chances on well, stuff like this, but I ain't exactly holding my breath for Yakuza 4/Kenzen ever making it out of Japan (hope I'm wrong though).

The cut content sucks (well, the sidequests anyway...I didn't care about the hostess club or mahjong stuff), but it's still amazing that Yakuza 3 even made it out.  Maybe there is hope for 4.

That was me. And he didn't compare himself to being sunburnt, he compared himself to being burned, like the little girl who has scars on her arms from being in a fire.

I'm not buying the NA version since I already bought and played through the Japanese version, but I'd love to know how they approached it. It's not part of a sidequest, so they can't really cut it.
