Title: Phonebore: Help me choose my new phone!
Post by: Himu on March 11, 2010, 06:47:00 PM
It's down to these choices:

Pantech Impact

Blackberry Curve 8310

I'm leaning on the blackberry but the Pantech looks pretty swell too! Thoughts?

They do? I don't know much about cells.

And I'm not getting an iphone. I've used ipod touch before and those things are dumb. I can't imagine having the same interface on a phone.

Which carrier?

AT&T!

Those are not comparable. Switch to Verizon and get the Droid or Pre Plus.

Also the 8310 isn't even made anymore. If you stick with AT&T and want a BBerry get the 8900 or the 8520.

Verizon is that much better than AT&T?
Title: Re: Phonebore: Help me choose my new phone!
Post by: AdmiralViscen on March 11, 2010, 07:04:53 PM
yes. Outside of the Bold no BBerries are even 3G on AT&T. If you're going to pay a premium to be on ATT you might as well get reliable 3G coverage and a 3G device.

Yeah I looked on AT&T's site and there aren't even any phones worth considering on their lineup. Switch to verizon and get a droid:

Are you going to use it as a smartphone with a data plan and everything or do you just want a simple messaging phone?  If the latter, you should at least try out the pantech slate (which I have).  Slim design and the most comfortable qwerty keyboard I've ever used.

That's crazy.  You're already going with AT&T.  Get an iPhone.
It doesn't sound like he likes touchscreens honestly.

I'm not too thrilled with touchscreens myself, but the iPhone's great -shitty controls in a lot of games aside (and who gives a shit?)- for everyday use and has a lot of useful apps, plus an awesome web browser.

Garbage smartphone. It's a nice toy, though.

Tell me you got something practical, Himuro. Like a sweet Android device or one of 'dem fancy Palm devices. I'd even settle for BlackBerry.

Completely open source, more flexibility than the iPhone, multitasking, Google integration, etc.

Plus, I'm pretty sure the next iteration of Google Voice is going to have VOIP, considering their acquisition of Gizmo and the fact that Google is beginning to sell its own hardware.

The iPhone has a fantastic app store at its disposal, but it misses the mark on so many basic things that I want out of a device. I mean - jesus! - the iPhone just recently got proper MMS integration.

Anyone use Google Maps with Navigation? I am tempted to use it when I drive cross-country, but I heard its tied to the data connection. Meaning, if you lose signal, it goes kaput. I might end up buying CoPilot Live for $30 for that exact reason.

I don't use Verizon. T-Mo's 3G coverage is pretty great in the metropolitan areas (they even have it underneath the Metro now!), but pretty spotty outside of cities. I imagine losing signal somewhere in Pennsylvania.

changing settings on a BB is like 50000 steps compared to other phones. Even changing your ringtone requires you to either read the manual or take 20 god damn minutes figuring it out, at first.

What are some good phones that use Android?  I'll be getting a new phone this year and if it's in the price range of an Iphone, I"ll consider it.  I looked up Android after reading this thread and its features are quite interesting.  I probably don't need most of those features but I love playing with electronic gadgets.  Right now, I just have a crappy phone with basic capabilities and a lousy camera because my Sony broke and it costs too much to fix it.

From what I understand the best Android phone to get is the Nexus One. The Droid is good but just like any Motorola product is also kind of shit. The other HTC phones are average.

The two best right now are the Nexus One with T-Mobile and the Motorola Droid with Verizon. Both are cheaper than or the same price as the 16GB  iPhone 3GS with a contract.

Ridiculous UI slowdown/choppiness. I don't see a lot of reviews talking about it but I played around with one myself and the touchscreen is miserable, just like any other non-iPhone touchscreen.

Apparently the N1's touchscreen is sick, though, but I have yet to actually mess with one.

Both. I used one in a store, and I messed with one that a friend of mine had just bought. I dunno, it just wasn't smooth and the whole phone felt very sluggish.

And yeah, I forgot about the Zune HD, amazing touchscreen response on that thing.

You know I happened to be in a Best Buy today and I don't know what was up with the Droids I used before, but I toyed around with the display there and that thing was snazzy as fuck. Really responsive and surprisingly fast.

I'm a firm believer in the Droid now, will buy this summer when I leave the family plan on AT&T.

If you haven't already, make an account on https://www.wireless.att.com/olam/loginAction.olamexecute. You can track your usage and change your plan to whatever you need.

i can't remember if you absolutely have to have the BB data package or not. i used the unlimited data and text package for dumbphones ($30/month) and i've used it in about ten different phones, eight of which being smartphones with no issues. Probably best to check the AT&T section of www.howardforums.com.

i also transfer ~10GB of data over my cell connection a month with no problems. The cellular data plans for phones are truly unlimited. Supposedly when you hit a certain amount they might drop you down to EDGE speeds or something until you cycle over, but nothing serious. The PC card and i think tethered plans are limited to 5GB a month. i think Verizon's the same way.
