Title: Deadly Premonition
Post by: naff on March 11, 2010, 10:57:39 PM
Deadly Premonition looks like a piece of shit great, but ever since I read this review (http://www.destructoid.com/review-deadly-premonition-165168.phtml) I've been really looking forward to it. Sleeper cult hit maybe? Cult hit already? Anybody here playing it? I'm lookin out for the PAL release (which is apparently being made by someone).

Update: You can import this from Japan for PS3 apparently it's called Red Seeds Profile.  (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bp-49-en-15-red+seeds+profile-70-3p0x.html) Unfortunate it's ~$80 seeing as the 360 US version is only $20. It's all we PAL people have though atm.

I never knew about it apart from a couple random clips before the review. I had no idea it was only 20$ (until I read the review) but yeah, this game looks rad. Can't play it here yet though  :'(

Most of them say maybe 3 sentences. You can also skip talking / cutscenes.

protip: Press Start when entering / leaving your car and it will even skip that scene.

Title: Re: Deadly Premonition
Post by: Sho Nuff on March 15, 2010, 03:22:56 AM
I was expecting some shitty Silent Hill ripoff and now it's like a PS2 GTA clone

Now the main character is talking to me about how 80s movies on DVD never have good bonus features and the quality of the trailers on them are really crappy
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition
Post by: demi on March 15, 2010, 03:28:19 AM
Is he talking to you? Sounds like you don't know Zach...

I mentioned in the Playing thread, but the game is basically a $20 Shenmue without the shit, and there ARE shitty silent hill segments - which happen to be the worst parts of the game. I want George to whip me and treat me like dirt.
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition
Post by: Bebpo on March 15, 2010, 04:00:42 AM
I dunno.  Exactly what "shit" was in Shenmue?  I just remember it having badass kung fu fighting between adventure segments.
I mean I like DP, but it's more of a C grade shenmue x silent hill x RE to me.  The best description I've seen people give it is Simple Series 2000: The Detective.

I'm doing sidequests in ep2
It's fun.

Uh I dunno bebpo. Everything? You dont have to go out and ask people where the sailors are, to play lucky hit, to find the zheng dong bing bong house.
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition
Post by: Bebpo on March 15, 2010, 04:10:03 AM
everything you mentioned was great in shenmue and a truly classic gaming experience.

I think Shenmue at the time (both S1 and S2) were 10/10 amazingly original experiences.  I don't really see the flaws.  Driving a tractor around and working was fun!
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition

i only did one side quest the entire game

i'd like to replay it at some point and do more exploring, when some time passes and i forget how torn-asshole-bad the controls are
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition
Post by: cool breeze on March 15, 2010, 04:19:16 AM
I've only played this game for about three hours and I'm not enjoying the parts when I have to play it.  At least so far it seems like everything that isn't me controlling the game is AAA fucking awesome.

I love how they have upbeat music playing when they're talking about the crime scene and how this girl was killed.  But the best part so far was eating breakfast and York says "I'll have you know I'm very peculiar about my coffee (awesome smile)" then maybe twenty minutes later he is eating a biscuit and just says "I'll have you know I'm very peculiar about biscuits".

Side Quests give you major goodies. You can get a walkie talkie which instantly warp you anywhere in Greenvale (incl. car), infinite guns, item backpack upgrade, faster cars...

Most of it is zero work too.

Walkie Talkie - pick up a flower when its raining. George will want it later on. Bam, instant warp

Car upgrades - Run into the junkyard where the old guy tells you to. Bam, faster car

Hmmm.  Well I'm getting it regardless because I <3 <3 Max Payne.  But would be funny if Deadly Premonition was a similar type of game and better.  Kind of like I guess it is with Heavy Rain though I still haven't played that.

Alone in the Dark was the worst terrific game I've played this gen.

this PS3 owner is more jealous of DP then Gears of War and a non-shitty Bayonetta, it sounds like its right up my alley.

It's not really through their vaginas. They eat the seeds (when Emily got shoved some down her throat and Kaysen didnt pump her stomach) and it grows through their stomach. It's a lot of innuendo though - "she's been soiled", Kaysen drooling over her licking her, implying he fucked her

I honestly couldn't have stomached a lot of the gameplay stuff so by watching a play through I feel like I had a better experience because I could just skip the parts I wouldn't have played and just focus on the story.

You could also do the bone quest - gather all the bones for Brian early in the game, then when all are collected, have Willie steal them. Go get them back from Kaysen's truck and you get the infinite Magnum

No fighting required, just a little story progression

(I got 1000 in this game, no need to give the king tips)

I picked up a copy of Spy Fiction today for $2.99. It's basically SWERY doing the MGS games but there's a lot of fun tweaks (disguising yourself as people, turning invisible, etc).

Still, you can tell that Deadly Premonition is the game where he whipped out his balls and was like WOOOOOO

requires 3 plays, so a looooong time. I'm putting it aside for now and doing a hard mode/collectibles run when I feel like replaying it.
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition
Post by: demi on November 25, 2010, 06:27:38 PM
Its not a loooong time. You can run through the game in under 5 hours at most just focusing on story. The only looong part is getting all the cards and shit out of the way. I played it on Hard though first so Normal and Easy were quick.
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition
Post by: The Sceneman on November 25, 2010, 07:00:41 PM
I did Normal first with no side stuff. Took 15 hours.

Gonna do Hard mode and all sidequests and collectibles, the infinite ammo weapons will probably help on hard. Although you can just buy max ammo at the item boxes so infinte ammo weapons arent 100% essential.

But replaying it so soon will just sour the experience imo. I'll leave it for a bit and replay it in a few months time as I will have forgotten the story then, lol.

I will admit a lot of the drive to play the game came from finding out what happens next, so once you know all the twists the game wont be as compeling.

It is a true masterpiece. Its so rare when the cast of a game are all awesome and interesting and likable in their own ways.

Finally got around to this and so far so good.  I was actually pleasantly surprised on how well it controlled....I mean it's still janky but it's not as bad as I was expecting after watching some of the Giant Bomb endurance run.  Driving is ridiculous though.  You barely tap the stick and the car will veer off the road.  I definitely don't want to try any of the races if this is going to be the norm.

I think there's some sort of bug in my game where whenever I push the stick to the left in the menus or when I'm driving the game goes fucking nuts and won't stop going to the left until I correct it by hitting the opposite direction.  If this isn't a bug, it sure as hell feels like one.  Makes driving around a total pain in the ass.

The game actually gets pretty creepy. Considering the devs limitations the ghouls get quite unnerving at times.

You should really play this wonderful game, if you dont like it you probably like a Sony title that is lame

i forgot how awesome this game is.  Gonna play it all afternoon!

Maybe I'm misreading, but York keeps on calling the sheriff a "monarch."  Isn't the correct word "patriarch?"  I played up to chapter 2 months ago and just resumed, so maybe I'm forgetting something.

bonus original trailer from when it was called "Rainy Woods":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbbhwO7pRHA

I wonder why it took another 3 years to come out.  I assumed they got a cease and desist from whoever owns the Twin Peaks rights, but from what I've played, a lot of the same scenes are in the final game.

they actually had to re-record all the dialog that mention the town by name because of the change from 'rainy woods' to 'greenvale', if I remember correctly.
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition

Why would they need to change it from "Rainy Woods"? I can understand if they made them take out a mysterious midget talking in front of a red velvet curtain, but it's not like "Twin Peaks" is too particularly close to "(Adjective) (natural feature)" as a place name.

Just did the first "dungeon" in the lumber mill.  There's something very strangely good about the shooting and I think it has everything to do with the enemies' movements.  all that walking backwards and wave dashing around and shit actually makes for some good tension.  It's a nice compromise between making enemies bullet sponges that just walk straight at you (like RE games) and giving you infinite ammo.  Even the long QTE section at the end felt less like a gratuitous God Of War QTE and more like a well-placed and genuinely fun RE4 QTE.  You can't fight the raincoat guy, so you have to run like hell from him.

I get the same feeling from this game that I did from No More Heroes.  It's fucked up on a technical level that few games are...its budget limitations are painfully obvious, maybe the guys working on it didn't know exactly what they were doing, but it's damn fun and you just want to see what crazy shit happens next.

RESPECK!

This game is like a parallel universe where an unknown Japanese dev company created Twin Peaks instead, then had Tommy Wiseau do the translation job.  Amazing.

From the sound of things, there were a lot of other similarities as well. In the process of changing around some things with the main character and story, they also changed the name of the town as well.

This was called "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins!" in the USA. And with many movies which declare themselves to be the first of a series, it tanked so badly that no-one would make a sequel.  :'(

Started playing tonight; it wasn't what I was expecting. Hallway level design in a forest, and spawny-spawn-o-riffic bad guys. The camera is too tightly hunkered up against the player character, and the controls are very strange. The right stick is some kind of "glance around" control? And aiming requires a really deft touch to get it on sight, but once there it seems to stick to the target automatically. Some weird choices, overall.

Well, at least there's unlimited ammo in the default weapon, seriously freaky creatures and sound design, and a good sense of suspense.

Immediately after ex-Marvelous CEO (and new Toybox Games founder) Yasuhiro Wada let slip news of a new Deadly Premonition PS3 project at GDC, he met with Joystiq for an interview and clarified just what it is. And it's not a sequel.

Deadly Premonition is being "remastered" and updated for PS3, by a team headed by Swery65, working in concert with the two-man Toybox studio. The new version, which will be further detailed at E3, will include new content, including new "scenarios" -- and support for the PlayStation Move. We're sure the whole thing will make much more sense with motion controls.

It now uses standard dual stick movement controls.
No showers or bike riding but you "may" get the ability to buy your own house in Greenvale.
Both the intro and ending have been changed a bit.
They wanted to add back violence that was cut from the 360 release but Rising Star apparently said no.

Post by: Bebpo on October 29, 2013, 03:45:02 PM
I don't really get how Japanese programmers are so incompetent at the tech side of gaming in anything past 480p.  I mean on the PS2 they were writing craaaaazy code that pushed those machines in ways no one could have ever expected (ZoE2, SoTC, etc...) yet once we went to 720p textures, shaders, lighting and other stuff, everyone threw their hands up said "I don't know this" and walked out of the building or something.

I mean it's been like 7 years now...; come on, the young recruits straight out of computer majors have to be learning this stuff, right?
Title: Re: Deadly Premonition

It's not a matter of can or can't, it's that generating high resolution game assets is time-consuming work, which equals money-consuming, which is where most Japanese devs have to compromise to get a game out the door.

Of course when your producer also happens to be a hardware manufacturer (in the case of SotC, Sony), they'll let you suck up all the time and money you need (ala The Last Guardian), but not every Japanese game developer is so lucky.

Especially not one with a sales record like Swery.

who actually developed the PC port?  This had to be farmed out to some no-name eastern bloc studio where the Japanese to Slovenian coding process made for some difficulties or some shit, right?

Rising Star Games, apparently. A UK developer.
