Gundam World is Unreal, said Yoshiyuki Tomino
A talk called "Introduction to Gundam Astronomy" was held on March 9th, featuring three guest speakers including the creator of Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino, "Gundam UC" author, Harutoshi Fukui and astronomy professor, Jun Fukue (福江純).
The event was held at Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, which is 270 meters above sea level in Tokyo Sky Deck.
The main objective of the talk is the discuss the possibility of space exploration from Gundam universe's point of view, whether space colony is feasible and other related issues.
Unfortunately, Yoshiyuki Tomino somewhat destroys many people dreams by saying that "the world of Gundam is unrealistic" (ガンダムの世界は非現実的). He remained skeptic of the possibilities of human beings living in space colonies for as long as 30 years as depicted in Gundam anime as he thinks the environment wouldn't permit it.
"Then, you don't like the world of Gundam?" (じゃあ、ガンダムみたいな世界はないわけ!?) Questioned by Harutoshi Fukui who wasn't very happy about Yoshiyuki Tomino's statment.
"It's just an anime" (だってアニメだもん!) said Yoshiyuki Tomino. ^^;
On the various terms, names and development plans he came up with in the Gundam world, "I can't remember, I just followed my feeling at the time when I created them". ^^; He even said that "Gundams are drawn by people with empty wishes, and Gundam anime producers like him are tormented by that" (ものすごい絵空事をこの人はそれっぽく描くから、僕たち(ガンダムの制作者たち)は苦しめられる). This provoked a lot of displeased grumblings from Harutoshi Fukui.
However, Yoshiyuki Tomino did mentioned that the interest he have in the world of Gundam, he studied astronomy a lot since primary school, and gained a lot of knowledge from it.
Well, the father of Gundam is indeed visionary in creating the world of Gundam, which fascinates and inspires many people, but he's being absolutely realistic about it at the same time. ^^; Also, following Google Translate's translation on the article, some phrases in this posting may not be what Yoshiyuki Tomino said exactly at the event.

The original creator of Gundam annihilates the creator of Gundam Unicorn. :lol

Yoshiyuki Tomino (the creator of Gundam) was in a panel discussion with an astronomy professor and Harutoshi Fukui (the creator of the Gundam Unicorn novels which the latest animated series is based off of) to talk about the practicality of the technology featured in Gundam (habitation in space colonies and such). Tomino basically said Gundam was shallow ("an empty wish"), fake and could never work in real life, which freaked out and pissed off Fukui, who is apparently a major Gundam fanboy.
-
BUT MY MINOVSKY PARTICLES
-
THEIR DREAMS ARE EMPTY!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Hasn't Tomino called out Gundam fanboys in the past?
But he's right, it is just an anime. Nothing shocking here, move along.

"I assure you all, distantmantra is not suicidal. The gun he had in his mouth was actually made of chocolate and was given to him as a present. Those were tears of joy at receiving such a delicious present, not a cry of desperation!"

If you ever see me ranting about the real-life possibilities of Gundam technology, please shoot me.

I'm hoping to get into robotics, actually, which is one reason I'm studying physics now. But the only Gundam I've seen is the first few episodes of Zeta Gundam. I liked the opening song.

Cool.
Grad school or industry or a hobby?

meh, it doesn't matter what Tomino wants. He's a fantastic director, but he trolls gundam fans nonstop. Then again considering how the franchise has sunk since he was heading it, I'd be trolling them too if I were him. If smart scientists who've grown up on gundam decide to make giant robots and space colonies, eventually it will happen. Especially once we start getting prime ministers ruling Japan who are big gundam fans and will divert funds to making gundam a reality.

Whats the shortest gundam series? I feel like watching some mecha action but don't really interesting in something 100+ episodes long.

None of them are 100 eps long :P
If you have the time, watch the Gundam movie trilogy. It's basically the Star Wars trilogy of Japan. It's the start and still one of the best. 3 movies long, each is ~2 hours.
If you don't want to spend that much time, 0080 is really short at 6eps and good; not a heavy emphasis on mecha, more about a good story/characters. 0083 is 13eps and has awesome mecha action and story/characters are very 2ndary. 08th team is 12eps, everyone looks like Cowboy Bebop (same artist) and is a solid show.
-
hmmm my give the movies and 0083 a try, thanks.
-
0083 sucks.
-
Great visuals, but crap storyline. I like to think of it as the Top Gun of Gundam.

Yup. Beautiful mecha designs and animation, but the story is terrible and incomprehensible to anyone who's just starting to get into Gundam.
I would definitely recommend 8th MS Team over it.
-
Stardust Memory? I had no problems following the storyline when I read the Viz Comics anime-cel manga adaption years and years ago. You don't have to know jack squat about Gundam for that one. Maybe that's why I liked it.
-
Please tell me you added the "^^;"s and that those aren't in the actual article.

Really? Because they drop tons of shit that's related to the main Gundam series with no explanation. Why is Cima's fleet hated by everybody? Who are the Titans? Why are some operatives from the Federation cooperating with a certain character from Zeon? I'm sure you got the broad strokes of the story, but I highly doubt you got what they were trying to do with it, since it's designed as a bridge between MSG and Zeta.

You don't need to know anything about Gundam for most of the shows outside Char's Counterattack & Unicorn Gundam. Maybe Zeta, but I bet Zeta stands on its own.
-
0083 most definitely does not stand on its own. I would say 0080, 8th MS Team, and MS Igloo are the most newbie-friendly UC Gundam series. They're self-contained stories taking place within the universe, whereas 0083 is set up with tons of fan servicey bullshit for people who've seen MSG and Zeta.
-
Yeah, it's kinda hard to follow who's betraying who and why in 0083 unless you've seen a lot of Gundam.

Even if you've seen it all, it's still not entirely clear.

Again, when I first read those comics back in 1994, I didn't know jack and shit about Gundam, and it was easy to follow. Maybe that adaption changes things up a bit or something, I dunno.

Nah, I saw 0083 before Zeta and MSG and I thought it was fine. It just had a weak plot and the characters were meh. But oh my the action...oh my.
If you've only read the manga you really owe it to yourself to watch the OAV. Seeing the main gundams fight in 0083 is satisfying as hell.
-
0083 HATE IN THIS THREAD IS HORRIBLE AND YOU SHOULD ALL BE CAST INTO THE PITS OF HELL
-
Cool.

Hobby atm, looking into possibility of going back to school in the fall.
-
8th MS Team is the easiest Gundam show to get into. It's short, has a lot of action, and mostly focuses on a smaller cast. 0080 has more of an impact if you've watched the original Gundam/0079. It's not quite as stand alone, even if it is a self contained story.
and bi-pedal robots in real life are total impractical and this is coming from a huge Gundam and mecha fan. The origins or reason why there are human shaped machines are always crazy. Macross probably has the most hilarious one (that isn't trying to be a joke).
-
OO is the only good gundam.
-
0083 was easy to follow and you didn't have to give a fuck about what there saying, just watch the fights/action.
The first Gundam series that introduced me to mobile armor and it was badass.
could never get into 0080, felt like garbage to me (maybe it was the main character annoying the fuck out of me).
08th ms was really cool since the focus was a far cry from usual Gundam series

War in the Pocket has one of the best animated battle sequences in all Gundam IMO. Just a clip of it:

Meh, I don't even watch Gundam but I still want some motherfucking space colonies.

Been a while since I saw 0083 [watched it back when it was on Adult Swim], but I remember really like it.
-
Animation and battle sequences are awesome, story and most characters are shit. Kou Uraki is the most annoying Gundam protagonist ever.

Not sure if serious

I'd like to make a quadruped robot, like a cat or something. My dream would be to make a robot that could hang with the neighborhood stray cats.
