Title: Cave Story WiiWare
Post by: demi on March 22, 2010, 04:47:29 PM
I am a Cave Story VIRGIN, so this is all new.

no spoilerz plz~ (not that it matters for a game like this)

Quick notes:

* Gorgeous pixel art
* Can swap between old and new graphics / music, interchangable (Old Graphics / New Music) (New Graphics / Old Music) (etc.)
* No waggle
* Not exactly widescreen, but barely to the mark so its not that noticable
* Can play game as "Curly Brace" along with the original guy, not sure if its any different

I read there was some secret ending? Plz post that if you can without spoiling too much.

Great game, very retro

You've never played this? Damn, demi.

It's a great game, I just know that there are two different endings, and one almost doubles the length of the game while the other just ends it right there. It should be pretty obvious which is which when it comes to the showdown.

I'm definitely buying this whenever I get a Wii, since pixel is amazing. Apparently he's working on an RPG now.

Nah, I wanted to but once I heard this remake was coming out I decided to just wait. It's very Zelda it feels like. Metroidvania?

You cant seem to change the graphics when you start the game, can only do it on the main menu.

So can you miss out on stuff? Just want to know what to expect... is it like SOTN, where you need a specific item to progress to the inverted castle?

You can miss out on tons of shit. And you have to if you're just doing one play-through. I'd tell you what to do to get the best shit, but I'll let you play and figure it out. There isn't anything colossal that you can miss, there are just some trade-offs you make depending on what you do.

secret ending is missable but the game isn't that long,i suggest you shoot for the normal ending and then just replay the game twice

I tried Cave Story with original graphics and the new ones completely annihilate it. Will play superior version

Who is Curly Brace? The game gives you the choice of playing as "her" or the original guy. I didnt notice any immediate differences.

You get 3 difficulties - Easy / Original / Hard

Though I didnt get this choice when I accidentally picked to play as Curly Brace

I think depending on who you pick it makes it a certain difficulty. I think Curly Brace is Easy, Quote is Original and some random dude is Hard.

Sure? Do whatever you want. I'm pretty sure Hard mode is going to have the most stuff.

Game sounds too confusing man. I just want the best run on my first play.

Play on Hard. Don't get the Machine Gun, return the Polar Star to its rightful owner, and when you see a red line on the ground, ignore what just happened and keep progressing.

My best attempt at a spoiler-free cheat sheet to Cave Story.

As far as I know. I may have missed something. I haven't done the secret ending myself, but you'll get the "good ending" if you do those things, and the game will in general be much harder, even without hard mode.

EDIT: Right, I just double checked and definitely use your map to find secret passageways or else you won't find some key items.

What about Metroidtombvania  :o. The way the towns work and the graphics remind me of Tombi quite a lot. Need to play this. Now. For I too am a Cave Story virgin  :-[

I would love for a portable rendition but this is fine.

You can play it on a PSP with custom firmware, they announced a PSP version back in 2007 but never did release it.

He's working on a new ip for wiiware at the moment, Night Sky or something like that.  Physics based game where you roll a black blob around.

Weird, I can't find the info now, but at the time of its announcement there were a lot of nerd bitching.  Apparently whoever was making it previously had released freeware games on pc solely.  So you had a bunch of pc gamers with entitlement complexes whining about wii exclusivity.
