But you can't use this for game installs? The Arcade games are getting a lot bigger too. If I can't save those, installs, or DLC, then this is worthless.
Aren't those the only things that take up HD space really?
Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." That's right, you can also store disc-based games to the USB device; however, it will require the disc to be in the tray for authentication, identical to the current functionality.
If it does game installs I'll be pretty stoked since I still have a launch 20giger and can only have 1 or 2 games installed at a time.they should just give us those new 250 GB's. as reparations.
(up to 16GB each)I knew it was too much to hope for that I might be able to use my external

Nobody knows what you can do with it yet.
I don't think anybody knows yet although if it did game installs its weird that Microsoft didn't mention it in the information they released today which makes me skeptical it will.
If it does game installs, that's an amazing update. If it doesn't then I could give a crap about the update.
In a conversation with Joystiq, Hryb informed us that all data will be transferable to the USB device, except for installed games -- users will need to re-install those directly to the USB device once more. He assured us, however, that, "If you've got a 16GB and you only want to use 8, you can use the UI and throttle it back." Further, he reiterated to Joystiq that while this branded device is certainly one option, other Flash drives (including those larger than 16GB)

Yeah, but they said using HDs is much slower than using flashdrives.QuoteFurther, he reiterated to Joystiq that while this branded device is certainly one option, other Flash drives (including those larger than 16GB) will work in the same capacity.???
edit: I meant the total size of the device, not space allocated to the device by the Xbox. What I'm wondering is if I can pop in my external and have 16gb partitioned that I can use instead of having to buy a flash drive
I wonder if games will load faster off the flash drive than the X360 HD
so why just cap it to 16GB? I have a 32 one. And there are usb cards up to 256GB these days

Another question would be if game installs are actually one big file or a few smaller ones?
This will be a sweet feature regardless, I want to piss on my 20 gig HDD
I'm assuming this has to be a FAT32 format?Nope, single file sizes are bigger than 4GB.
Alright then help a bro out
I have a 500 gig western digital that I use for wii games, 400 some gigs dedicated to a WBFS parition and the remaining 80 is unformatted. I know that if I plug it in to the 360 and select customize, I can make 16 of those 80 gigs allocated for the 360, but it gives me a message saying the 360 needs to format it. Will that erase all of my wii games or just format the remaining 80 gigs thats unformatted?

Or legit people who have no internet

and 4 gigs of XBLA stuff.XBLA games keep getting bigger. That's gonna fill up fast.
All set now with the 16 gigs of storage. Obviously it would be much better if Microsoft just made the cap size unlimited but I'll take what I can get.
Like a lot of people I had a 20 gig unit and was always out of space and always deleting and installing games. Now between my original hard drive and the extra I have room for 3 full installs or 2 installs and 4 gigs of XBLA stuff.
Eventually I'll get a 16gb flash unit that is faster but for now I'm fine with the speed and reducing how loud the 360 is by playing off installed games.
Anyway on GAF they are saying that if you put your tag on a flash drive it lessens the uberload of your games library. Haven't tried it yet.
haha, Brandnew is only back cuz he was banned at GAF?

That would be pretty nice, but why would it have that effect?

Well, BrandNew might not have thought this place was worth his time, but if banned from GAF then he basically has no other option so then he might have come back. But I will still give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he did like our company and was coming back anyway.
Wow just wow, wonder what other games have benefits from solid state installs.Probably every game that is seek heavy like GTA.
Do I have to transfer my gamer profile over to the USB stick, or can I install what I want to the stick while keeping my main profile on the HDD?

:lol sorry! I should'a bolded what I had intended to be the subject of the question. Fixed now. ;)
I just don't understand how putting the gamertag on a USB drive but still having your library on the HDD would result in a performance increase for loading/displaying the library contents.
Can't you keep your profile on both your HDD and the USB drive? ???
I have a 60 GB unit and I'm thinking of buying a USB drive for all my save files and stuff
Anyone know what speed of USB stick will get better performance than a HDD?
I've got some cheapo 16gb sticks that have read speeds of about 11mbps, wondering if there'd be any benefit
