Title: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: Rman on March 31, 2010, 07:44:27 PM
I don't get why people request to have paper receipts printed when taking out cash from the ATM only to throw it away seconds later?  Especially in the era of ubiquitous online banking.  smh old people.

I dunno, it's nice to get immediately feedback on what you've got left after your withdrawal is accounted for.  My bank's ATMs don't even have the option, though --you get one, like it or not.

I'm guessing the reason they don't do that is because anyone standing behind you could then effortlessly see how much cash you've got.

It's crazy how some people just crumple up the receipts and toss them on the bank floor, with all the sensitive info intact.  I know the receipts don't show the entire account number, but it's still kinda weird.

You know how most receipts display the whole account # as ***s except for the last four numbers? Well, when I was in China, I came across an ATM that showed the first 12 and only starred out the last four. So if you kept that receipt and one from another ATM, and someone found your wallet, they'd be able to figure out your whole account number.

By mild do you just mean for "spicy" food?  I hate that too and I don't even really like spicy food.

What I really don't get are people who assume that a really black and white test they saw on TV proves that a food previously considered healthy by the FDA is totally going to kill you at any second.  It's especially annoying that the most "health-oriented" people fuck around the most this way.

I also hate those parents who substitute beating for spanking and see nothing wrong with it.  Just screaming at their child in public.

I don't dig guns either. I don't want any in my house. They are objects designed to kill, and beyond that, they are 'point and click' killers, and BEYOND that, you have no control over that bullet once it lets loose. Maybe it hits your target, but maybe it goes on and ricochets and hits something unintended. So, not only are they killing devices, they are killing devices which are subject to unintended consequence and further dumb down the art of violence.
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: etiolate on April 01, 2010, 02:39:08 AM
I didn't want to use "art" but I couldn't think of a better word. I guess the sport of violence works. Either way, something mentally different between bomb killing and gun killing and knife killing.

"tool" of violence works best I think.  I don't buy that a private gun owner is doing anything substantial for self-defense when they buy a handgun.

wow, dumb opinions are duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumb

people cant seem to wrap their heads around the fact that people sometimes buy guns without the intention of killing someone, and etoilet obviously has never heard of those bullets that were designed for urban warfare that turn to dust upon impact with anything thats not soft tissue

most of these opinions boil down to a distrust of other people and that when they imagine themselves with a firearm in their hand they think they wouldnt be competent with it, therefore everyone else shouldnt own a gun

I'm not very opinionated.  I just looked at the Uniform Crime Reports and see that obviously there's many times more gun murders than there are justifiable gun homicides (even combining both police and civilian incidents) and put two and two together.

I can't justify getting around the idea that we should give criminals a chance to get a concealed gun because a handgun is more useful than a shotgun in extremely close range in the very rare chance that you need a gun to defend yourself.  I don't have a problem with long guns btw and I just dislike handguns being something we can buy.
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: drew on April 01, 2010, 05:06:46 AM
of course there are more murders than justified shootings, criminals shoot to kill and a responsible regular gun owner uses even non kill shots as an absolute last resort, and obviously criminals go out of their way to kill people, legal concealed carriers dont

concealed carry is great for the remote chance a person might find themselves in the presence of a random public shooting spree, which seems to be happening more and more, id rather take the good with the bad and have me or someone else armed in case god forbid that ever happens to me, not that im saying im looking to get a concealed carry permit anytime soon, i just want to go to the range

there is a very negligible chance you'd get into a shooting spree dude.

This page is pretty clear how much relative damage handguns cause.

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/offenses/expanded_information/data/shrtable_11.html

They actually may be more useful for self-defense:

Why people who take majors like Political and Sociology just expect a $60,000 a year job just waiting for them when they graduate.

We get it; you're a math/science/engineering elitist.  ::)

But to answer your question, I don't think anyone expects a $60,000 a year job upon graduating at this point. But I think that some people feel this way because they know that there are plenty of office jobs out there that pay $60k that they could do in their sleep.

I think his point is that that is a stupid misconception.

Not really.

There are lots of decent-paying office jobs that could be done by just about anyone smart enough to graduate from a halfway decent college. The issue is that you can't get these jobs without a few years of experience in a lower-paying version of the job.

One of my best friends got a job two years ago paying $57k. From what I've heard (which is quite a bit), I doubt I or a lot of people I know would have too much trouble stepping into that position if the opportunity arose.
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: brawndolicious on April 01, 2010, 08:11:06 AM
So they're just short-sighted.  You can't justify spending thousands of dollars on your education when it isn't directly relevant to your field.  Nobody will pay you an extra few dollars an hour if you know all about film or philosophy or whatever.  You can research those on your own time but expecting a job because of those majors is ridiculous.

Yes some people may think a diploma from a certain school with your name on it is worth $60k a year but they obviously didn't think it through.  I don't think T Exp dislikes those students for taking "easy" majors so much as for expecting a decent job that is completely unrelated to their education.
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: Green Shinobi on April 01, 2010, 08:16:18 AM
You still went to college and graduated. You presumably took loads of courses outside the major and developed skills in lots of areas. And really, what specialized degree is going to prepare someone to be a "mid-level brand manager" or a "sales consultant"?

Edit: I totally agree that no one should really expect a $60k job right out of college. But $35-40k shouldn't have to be such a long shot, particularly in a coastal area. There's no reason for anyone who got a university degree to be making $10/hr.
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: brawndolicious on April 01, 2010, 08:25:03 AM
Business Administration would be exactly for that.  Employers don't care if you took a couple easy electives, they will care if you have a lot of technical knowledge and skills directly relevant to your field.  The problem is a lot of people think taking "fun/fulfilling" classes in something subjective so that you can get into some office job with vague qualification is a real career plan.  It's their inability to rationally connect going to a university with going into the workforce.  Maybe it's because they're short-sighted or maybe it's because they're just afraid.

The thing is that if you're going to a university, you should be expecting a job that can pay off your tuition.
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: Green Shinobi on April 01, 2010, 08:32:46 AM
The thing is, that was always a real career plan until recent years. My friend making $57k was a psych major. Another friend making a great salary was a philosophy major. A third friend who was making more than both of them was an art history major. Lucky for them, they were able to get in with decent companies before the recession, and they've proven their worth since then.

A business degree is great, but for an entry-level office job, will there really be any tangible difference between a business major and a sociology major? Hell no. Maybe the business guy will have used Excel a bit more, but it will take all of one night of studying for the soc major to catch up.

True story: the department I work in has stopped interviewing business school candidates. Having trekked through the hardly rigorous or useful coursework myself, I agree with that decision. Business schools should require at least basic calculus and more rigorous computer competency, both of which are not standard across programs. I would agree with GS's statement about sociology vs. business, the difference is probably negligable in terms of skill set.

How far into calculus would you have to go to be able to do that? Also, what programming languages?

I ask because I'm thinking of trying to retrain for a more technical field at some point in the future.

A full calculus background (typically I, II, and III) and Differential Equations helps. We obviously use Econometrics for modelling, I think there is a good text by Greene if interested. Also, economics knowledge is required/helpful. Send me a pm and I can recommend you texts on all of the above, or just grab the open coursework from MIT's website.

How often do cops shoot rifles? :smug

Up until about six months before I joined, every single officer in the history of the RCMP was trained and qualified on rifles.

The more insightful question is "what is the greatest fear of a cop who patrols a rural area?"

And the answer is "responding to a call and driving up the looong open driveway from the highway to the house, and being worried about the possibility of the unstable fucker with a rifle taking me out before I can even think about drawing my sidearm"

Or, put another way, to change your statement of "Handguns can hurt people just as well as a rifle, especially at a distance of 15 ft." to make it truthful:

"The only chance in Satan's fiery hell that someone with a handgun has a chance of winning an encounter with someone with a rifle, is if they are within a distance of 15ft."  And even then, the guy with the rifle only needs to scored one shot to win, while the guy with the handgun might have to unload half a mag before the other guy drops.

Videogames taught me all I have to do is put the cursor on your head, doesn't matter what gun!

dude, there's only 3 ways to deal with your shit:

1) Ignore you.  This is an increasingly popular option.
2) Deflect via flirty gay subtext.  Effective, but it gets tiring.
3) Beat the shit out of your annoying schtick.

So don't get all teary-eyed just because people get tired of picking option 1 and 2.

In danger of some real talk, the proliferation of guns is very serious issue and in an ideal situation it would be possible but difficult to get a firearm that is not used for hunting. The situation in America now though is so beyond that point that everyone should just be given a gun and assumed armed and dangerous at any point.

Criminals use knives and shit over here. I've seen a gun once. So the situation in Europe is not comparable to America. I tend to think of it along the lines of polygamous relationships, which are common in part of Asia, and just not give a shit as it doesn't concern me.

whats wrong with going to the range and practice your shooting skills? isnt that better than killing defenseless animals? (im all for the hunting of animals that can kill you though, like bears, the pride these hunting assholes take in shooting a turkey is disgusting)
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: elektrikluv on April 02, 2010, 12:26:25 PM
Yeah there's always the black market, which isn't as accessible as when it is legal. When people are using guns, people are more likely to die, mortality rate for a gunshot to the heart is 84%, knife is 30%.

America has practically the highest homicide rate in the developed world (2 or 4 times higher than most), with handgun homicides accounting for the majority of the difference.

I don't like guns, I'm glad I live in a country where they are outlawed and the self-defense argument is redundant.

I'm not going to get caught up in a guns debate with Americans. Good for you if you like your guns, you live in a country where you're allowed to own them.

So just because something can always be acquired illegally it should be made legal?

At the end of the day, the statistics speak for themselves. More people die due to gun crime in America.

drugs? no. guns? yes.

id take the option of more good guys being able to protect eachother with the negative of them being more common

what youre not getting is that the vast majority of that murder rate is from thugs killing other thugs

At the end of the day, the statistics speak for themselves. More people die due to gun crime in America.

at the end of the day we will still have more gangs and worse ghettos
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: The Fake Shemp on April 02, 2010, 12:58:41 PM
Yeah, you can come in here with your fancy charts and high-falutin' "statistics", but what do you tell honest Americans who are stuck in an inner city that is nothing more than a glorified Sergio Leone western with black people? We need our guns to fight off the guys with guns! It's just science.

Maybe if you guys had guns, we wouldn't have to police the world. ::)
Title: Re: Stuff you don't get.
Post by: elektrikluv on April 02, 2010, 01:05:32 PM
Yeah thugs killing other thugs because they have the means to do it. A death is still a death.

And guns are only used as self-defense in America in 0.2% of crimes, 0.8% in violent crimes. Oh and a large percentage of that small percentage is police officers use. Clearly they're not really doing their job and are predominantly being used for criminal purposes, of which the rate of homicide by gun would be much lower if the guns weren't actually legal. Regardless of who is killing who. If your theory about the bad guys acquiring them regardless if they're outlawed was true, then surely the statistics would be more level with the rest of the developed world as far as gun crime was concerned, because thugs and ghettos exist everywhere, and even if there are more in America it would not be enough to explain such a vast disparity in figures.

yeah basically.  The source for black market guns are American gun shows and states with very lax gun laws though.  The fact of the matter is that there's not a lot to stop any psychopathic convicted felon from getting a gun these days.

Don't bring up random mass shootings.  They're extremely rare and your solution is ridiculous (vigilantes).  My concern is with career criminals.
