What's also sad is how D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill were going to be the Stevie Wonder and Aretha of this generation and then both flamed out because of drugs.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

OMG what an album
Yeah, if anybody was going to rise from Hip Hop and be a true transcendental star, I thought it was going to be her. Amazing Album. Tons of talent. She could sing and rap. And then it was all gone.

The first Arrested Development album is also a truely signficant album that I thought was going to herald a great new thing. But they also flamed out really quickly and speech has never really equaled it with his solo work. Also sad.

I actually saw them at a Folk Festival just a couple years ago and they stole the show (they were the last act of the night and the 2nd last was alot more popular and 1/2 the crowd probably left before they came on). They were still a pretty amazing live act, I'd have never thought to go see them but I'd recommend it.

Illmatic and Liquid Swords are still two of my favorite albums of all time :bow

And I still think both 2-Pac and Biggie are overrated

Yeah its funny how that works. Two of the best shows I've ever seen live were by a little outfit out of NC named DAG that doesn't even exist anymore. I bet situations like that exist for lots of bands that no one has ever heard of.

With Lauryn Hill, it's more about being surrounded by bad people than drugs; drugs tend to spawn a shit ton of good music (early in careers) whereas bad peoples almost always fuck things up. Lauryn cut ties with many people who cared about her, burned bridges with her label, and joined a cult which siphons a good deal of her finances.

She's very talented, but she's also relied on other people writing for her, and being surrounded by people telling her how amazing she is has clouded her vision imo. Wyclef was the dude behind the Fugees, and of course Miseducation was heavily influenced by many co-writers. Those similarities to Kanye West were one of the reasons I was pretty excited to hear they were working together a few  years ago, but that fell apart.

It's truly a shame. We might not hear much of her stuff until she bites the dust.
