Post by: ManaByte on April 04, 2010, 07:43:28 PM
Been shaking for a good 45-60 seconds. Really big one. Things fell over and broke.

People felt it down in San Diego. I'm near the desert and it's really hit hard here. Started slow and then BANG everything started to fall, kitten went nuts, dogs were hiding in their houses. Huge.

They're saying it was a 6.9 off Baja CA. That's the same as the Loma Prieta quake 11 years ago in San Francisco.

I'm pretty sure they still make Godzilla movies in Japan, they just suck so nobody really cares about them. Kind of like the DTV American Pie sequels here.

True, but there were two stretches [from 1991 to 1995 and 1999 to 2004] where they were coming out with a new one every year.

distantmantra sent me a DVD of the first Godzilla movie.  It's pretty fucking awesome.

I watched the original Godzilla [NOT the Raymond Burr American version] a few months ago and it was pretty good, definitely had more depth than most of the ones since.

GOJIRA is indeed awesome, and stars Takashi Shimura, probably the best non-Mifune Kurosawa regular. :bow

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is also entertaining as hell, because it's literally Gojira with a random American douchebag cut into the film through movie magic to make it appeal to us more sophisticated lightskins. :usacry

Yeeep. And Gojira was directed by a guy who often did second unit on Kurosawa movies. He even was a full on co-director with Kurosawa on Dreams. Kurosawa always wanted to do a Godzilla movie but Toho wouldn't let him because they feared he'd go over-budget. I wonder how that movie would have turned out.

I'd be down for that.

Edit: Man, it's been too long since the last time I watched an Akira Kurosawa movie. There was a stretch where I watched quite a few of his. I've seen Dreams, Kagemusha, Sanjuro, Yojimbo, The Bad Sleep Well, The Hidden Fortress, The Lower Depths, Throne of Blood, Seven Samurai, Ikiru, and Stray Dog, but it's been probably at least two years since I last watched one. Someone suggest one that I haven't seen and I'll put it in my Netflix queue.

Check out Dersu Uzala too. I really love that one but it tends to get ignored since it is the one film of his not in Japanese. Although it was the only film he won an oscar for.

Alright, I'll put that one in there too. It'll probably be a decade before I get to it though, my Netflix queue is longer than Willco's list of rejected board game-based screenplays.

I could have sworn he listed it :'(

But yeah, High and Low is fucking great. Probably better than Ran even. If you can stomach a slow burn police procedural, it's one of the best I've seen.

Hey, Cheebs, have you seen any of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's movies? He and Akira are two of my favorite directors, I could watch just about anything from them and just absolutely love it. KK's style is quite a bit different from AK's though, it's very surreal and blends and twists various genres together in very strange ways. Check him out if you haven't already.

Nah, that's Tatsuya Nakadai (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, High and Low, Kagemusha, Ran).  Shimura is definitely a close third, though.

godard has a new movie out premiering at cannes this may.  :o the trailer for it was awesome, it was the entire movie but on like fast-foward.

Aaaand breathless got a brand new HD transfer and is getting a full nationwide theatrical rerelease in America this summer for the 50th anniversary.
