I'll never get used to this. I went off to brush my teeth, came back and my buddy was gone. Someone from HR was going through his desk, packing up his gym socks etc. I got a very vague explanation from my Head of Dept. about reallocation of global resources, and a seemingly-sincere reassurance that I had nothing to worry about (:lol), and that's it. The end of a man's career. Wife, 2 kids, mortgage... :'(

Job not career. It's not over yet.
Also brushing your teeth at work?

Also brushing your teeth at work?
Common in Japan.

They actually took him out back and shot him. They're taking all of his possessions to burn them in the heater downstairs.
-
Just seems odd.
-
Everyone does it after lunch. Considering how nasty a lot of Japanese people's mouths are, you'd think they'd notice they're better off just going to a dentist for a regular cleaning.
-
Yeah, I brush my teeth after lunch. I use mouthwash and everything. Hardly the direction I thought this thread would take but hey it's EB and folks want to know shit.
-
Man, I am so sorely in need of a beer right now. Got another 25 mins left before I can clock out and get wasted in an attempt to process this.
-
Usually they do layoffs right before or after the holidays here. That's what immediately came to mind but I guess that's fucked up and random.
-
In Japan, April is the beginning of the fiscal year so it actually makes perfect sense that they'd fire the guy now.

your Japan factoid: post ratio is pretty good Ichi :)
Borys - it is indeed corporate life. He's the 2nd person to sit in that desk in a year. The last guy died! It's weird - I'm completely unfazed by random people getting fired in the same dept, but this one hits close to home 'cause we were friends and worked together very closely.
-
Yeah...with any luck I'll be able to drink WITH him as well - playing phone tag with him right now. He probably wants to be with his family tonight, but you never know. Sometimes a man's gotta go out and get fucked up.

Sorry, I'm just bored. I hope I'm not coming off as callous. It sucks that your buddy lost his job. :(

it's alright man. Turns out he's getting a nice severance package out of it, which means he probably won't have to work for the rest of the year. So he doesn't seem too broken up about it.

My dad works in a dying medium (print media) and is just a couple years away from retiring, but he's kind of set financially and every time there's a new round of layoffs he prays he's one of them since he's got over 20 years of service with the company and his severance package would be pretty damn sweet.
