Title: Ethanol: Pay the same price for gas, more often
Post by: Brehvolution on April 06, 2010, 09:20:57 PM
Fuck you ethanol! I've noticed that ALL gas stations in my area now contain at least 10% ethanol. So I've been running some test on my mileage and this is what has happened:

$20 @ $2.99 gets me a little more than 6.5 gallons of gas which provides 180-190 miles before the gas light turns on.

$20 @ $2.99 with 10% ethanol gets me a little more than 6.5 gallons of gas which provides ~160 miles before the gas light turns on.

The difference is a round trip to work mileage wise.  :maf

I did some research and found this site (http://www.fuel-testers.com/state_guide_ethanol_laws.html).

Quote
The percent of ethanol may be incorrectly added by the local fuel distributor.
In most areas ethanol is added to the tanks by the delivery truck drivers, (local distributor); And, very few gas stations monitor or check ethanol content (% added) of fuel delivered and contained in the gas pump.

Several states that are now labeling, are attempting to change laws to "no label".

What I find troubling is that half the states don't require gas pumps to be labeled as containing ethanol. List of states at the link.

Charging "market" prices for a product that isn't 100% of the product should be against the law.

There are a few gas stations near me that have big signs up that say "100% GAS" or something to that effect.

Ethanol creates less energy when burned, you didn't have to crunch numbers to know you were getting fucked.

100% ethanol engines are supposed to be more efficient, but no one makes them for consumer purchase yet.

"gasahol" is definitely getting added to my day-to-day vernacular.

Ethanol actually has about 36% less energy per liter than gasoline but you're only getting about 16% less miles so apparently it's used more efficiently in your engine.  Probably because of the higher octane rating.

I thought a lot of the hype behind ethanol had to do with it producing less CO2 though?

My main beef is that it should be almost 10% cheaper than 100% gas. But it's not.

That's distinguished mentally-challenged logic. The point of ethanol is not cheaper prices. There is a reason why we are oil dependent (it's cheap as fuck).

You act if 10 percent ethanol is some sort of new concept in America.  Back in the 80's (when the midwestern states adopted ethanol blends) our gas was quite often 10-20 cents a gallon more. This was back when gas was around a buck, so it wasn't a big deal.
