Title: Help make my DS experience better ...
Post by: ToxicAdam on April 07, 2010, 12:38:18 AM
So far I have been through the Fire Emblem game (blah), Metal Slug (meh) and New SMB (3 hours of fun).

Next on my docket is the Might and Magic Clash of Heroes game.

Anymore recommendations would be great. I like games with depth. Please no remakes of old games (like the Final Fantasies).

Which Castlevania is good?  Rune Factory?

Surprised you havent touched Etrian Odyssey & The Dark Spire, since you like roguelike crawlers.

Best Castlevania -> Portrait of Ruin
Second best -> Dawn of Sorrow
Shit on a stick -> Order of Ecclesia

Rune Factory is basically Harvest Moon

Yea, Etrian Odyssey peaked my interest. Thanks for the advice on the Castlevanias.

Any Zelda worth getting?  FFTA2?

Grab Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.  It is a AAA dungeon crawler that will fulfill your Pokemon desires and be blasphemous at the same time!

Zelda and FFTA2 are both trash.  Grab Devil Survivor if you want some SRPG goodness.

The pokemon roguelike is decent too. For more hardcore look at Shiren or Izuna Unemployed Ninja

Deep Dungeon is cool. You might like Infinite Space, Frag has been rubbing his nub over it

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Ace Attorney 1-4
Ace Attorney Investigations
Jake Hunter Memories of the Past
Summon Night: Twin Age
Time Hollow (if you can find it cheap)
Elite Beat Agents
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime

I'd try the Zeldas out at the very least if you like past Zeldas.  They're divisive, definitely.

In terms of Castlevania, I much much prefer Dawn of Sorrow to Portrait of Ruin, but both are good.  Yeah, Ecclesia is turrible.

Check out the Ace Attorney games if you like uguu~ games

I'll probably do that if some of these recommendations don't pan out. I kind of bought into the hype that the DS has a shit ton of games, the problem is that 90% of them are aimed at pre-teens.

Thanks to everyone else for the recs. I'll bump this thread as I play through them.

Get Pokemon SoulSilver.  No, seriously.

this man speaks the Metriodvania truth, but I didnt think Ecclesia was that bad. Portrait of Ruin is totally boss

Yeah, DS is a child's toy for sure. Look at it more like those silly flash games you play and everything will be ok.

The Castlevanias, the Ace Attorney games, Contra 4, Tetris DS, Meteos, Planet Puzzle League, and Space Invaders Extreme (1 or 2) are worth checking out.  That's about it.

My DS pretty much collects dust when there's not a new Castlevania or Ace Attorney game to play.   It is easily the least-played Nintendo system I have ever owned.

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume

I loved FFTA2, but I seem to be far in the minority on that.

Forgot this one.  It's great. :D

100% correct

but I don't know how I'd feel about Dawn of Sorrow if I didn't play Aria of Sorrow because they're like the exact same game, only DoS has touch screen gimmicks.  Portrait of Ruin is the best for sure.  Order of Ecclesia is a snore.

Start with the 3 best games on the DS: Ouendan/Ouendan 2/Elite Beat Agents

infinite space
smt: strange journey
knights in the nightmare

first three games I have played on my (pretty new) DS. I really liked Infinite Space, but I'm a huge dork for anything with scifi-I openly admit it's more of a niche product than the other two games (Strange Journey being the "best" of the three by any critical standard.)

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates

I remember first starting Ring of Fates and thinking "cool... a fun hack and slashy ARPG, just like the old days!"... but as the game adds more characters, it devolves into garbage - the character AI is horrific, and you'll be spending most of your time trying to heal them and micromanaging them as they are constantly dying... not to mention, as soon as you get all 4 charas, the slowdown is terribad in some points.

Covenant of the Plume is fairly interesting, but if you are like me and go for all the endings, its pretty easy to get worn out on it. The balance is extremely weird in the game, you can go from being a total weakling to a god depending on certain weapons you receive as battle spoils. Also the enemy AI is really passive, they practically wait while you set them up for combo attacks. That said, the story is an interesting take on the VP mythos, and the translation is typical Alexander O Smith quality.

I was going to mention Trauma Center but I thought it would look odd with 3 music games. The first Trauma Center is amazing, easily in the top 5 on the DS. I couldn't get into the second game though, it just bored me to death and I stopped playing after a few hours. Same goes for Portrait of Ruin.

Trauma Center 1 and 2 are amazing, get them both.

UTK2 doesn't quite get as intense as UTK1, true. They took the criticism of the super alien viruses a bit much and so even near the end of the game you're still doing basic surgeries. More variety is nice, but it just didn't have enough dramatic "OMG I'M FUCKED" moments as the first game. The four new GUILT types aren't nearly as difficult or memorable either, and the final story operation (Aletheia in Mother of Sins) isn't nearly as dramatic or cool as Savato in the Seventh Sinner and the OMG DOUBLE HEALING TOUCH was.

Also seconding demi about Portrait of Ruin being the best.

I thought everyone here hated Portrait of Ruin? Maybe that was just Willco. Anyways, Portrait of Ruin has always been my favorite.  :-[

I wasn't too fond of Portrait of Ruin, but that might just be because the rom I used was bugged and would crash sporadically.

Just finished up Etrian Oddysey today. Great game, I probably spent about 50 hours beating it.

Looks like I'm going to move on to Knights in a Nightmare next.
