The largest scandal in e-sports history is currently unfolding in Korea, with revelations that a number of current pro gamers are involved with match set-ups and illegal betting.
While the gamers are un-named at this point, the story is said to touch many A-list StarCraft celebrities – including sAviOr, Ja Mae Yoon – one of the best-known and most successful players of all time.
At this stage, we hear that various pro gamers have been found intentionally losing matches, as well as leaking their team’s replay files to illegal gambling groups.
...
E-sports organisers allegedly knew about the situation and had attempted to solve the issue themselves, with the illegal businesses going further underground. A closed conference even saw the organisers discussing the possibility of co-existing with the illegal betting sites.
Myung Soo (Yarnc), Chan Soo (Luxury), Sang Ho (SangHo), Jung Woo (EffOrt), Yong Hwa (Movie), Jae Yoon (sAviOr), Taek Yong (Bisu), Byong Goo (Stork), Jae Wook (BeSt), il Jang (hero), Myung Hoon (fantasy), Heui Seung (UpMaGiC), Jae Dong (Jaedong), Sang Moon (Leta), Jong Seo (Justin), Chang Hee (go.go)
I know, LOLESPORTS, etc but this is pretty huge. What's really insane is how widespread it was.

i never used stim packs!

Leaking replays? Of practice runs, as I assume the matches are available for download for every pleb with an internet connection?
Either way, I suppose starcraft in Korea is strong enough to survive this, or what say you JET weeabos of evilbore?

Why are they still playing Starcraft at competitions? It's like playing Street Fighter 2 at fighting games tournaments.
-
People still play SF2 (SSF2T) at fighting game tournaments and it's still very popular.
The reason being that it's a well made game, highly competitive, and has enough of the genre fundamentals intact to not be considered antiquated by the core audience. Same can be said about SC.

I'd be more surprised if this wasn't happening.

But aren't those guys playing the updated version of SF2 that's being sold on PSN and XBL? If so, I don't really consider that to be an old game.

As of only this year are they switching over to HD Remix (as per the event line-up for EVO 2010). Still, SSF2T had been a yearly feature at EVO from 1995 to 2009 and still would be if not for the popularity of the refreshed version. The only reason it isn't ALSO included is because they are so extremely similar to one another.
