Title: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Himu on December 19, 2006, 07:26:29 PM
I've wanted to get more into movies lately but I don't know where to start. After seeing that top American movies list PD posted in Cheebs' thread I realized I had more catching up to do than I thought.

I'm going to set up a Netflix account and rent a few movies suggested from that list and from certain people on this forum who obviously know a bit about movies (Willco, Cheebs, Triumph, Solo, Mupepe).

The time period the movie was made really shouldn't matter, should it? I still enjoy really old movies. In fact, just a month ago I saw Singing in the Rain for the first time and absolutely loved it. I am also an avid John Wayne fan, so I 'm used to old movies.

It'd be nice to broaden my horizons in terms of movies I think. Let a rip, people!

Anything by (in no order):

Akira Kurosawa
Martin Scorsese
Orson Welles
Sam Peckenpah
Chan-wook Park
Quentin Tarantino
Terry Gilliam

Those are my favorite directors, in any case.

I've seen everything by Quentin with the exception of Jackie Brown and I've loved every one of them.

I have wanted to see Seven Samurai for awhile. Hmm.

Jackie Brown is an incredible film, and Seven Samurai... words can't describe it, so... :hyper

Just be prepared for the nearly four hour runtime.

I never understood that. Just because it takes place during the times of Jesus it is anti-Christian?  :lol Jesus only has a small cameo in it and his only line is from the bible.

I mean come on this is EASILY one of the top film moments in history:

Well, I haven't seen it, so I can't say. My dad says the same about The Last Temptation of Christ. Basically if the movie has any religious themes to it and it's not based on scripture it's sacrilegious.

Clifford was one of the most obnoxious films I ever was witness to.

Film is very subjective.  Your best shot is to try a smorgasboard, see what genres and directors you like best and then go on an all-out splurge once you realize what genre/directors your tastes cater to.  Film is too large and too broad to simply try everything simply because people call them classics.  It'd be a waste of your time when you could be watching stuff you'd like to see rather than watching stuff everyone likes to see.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Himu on December 19, 2006, 08:14:12 PM
I can already tell you that my favorite part of movies are the drama, the characters, their relationships. I'd say Drama is my favorite genre, although that genre is too broad and covers many sub genres I'd imagine. If a movie has good characterization, I am able to look past most of it's flaws.

Example of why I never get around to watching movies:

I've been hearing tons of good shit about The Wire (HBO show) and I've been thinking about picking it up or downloading it. I talked to my friend tonight and he was like, "Yea, it's my favorite show, I watched the last two seasons." So I'm like fuck it, let's have a Wire marathon or something, I'll buy the first season. BAM, I bought the first season and we watched 2 episodes tonight and will watched a shitload more tomorrow. I'm pretty addicted after just two episodes.

TV shows on DVD >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TV shows on TV.  Fuck, I hate having to wait til the next week.

I see it as a double edged sword. Waiting till the next increases excitement and makes watching the shows much funner I think, however, I do think that waiting for the next episode can be torture in of itself.

I watch my favorite shows on tv, buy the dvds when they're out, and rent shows I missed the previous season, and if I like them I continue to watch the next season.

I think watching TV shows over time gives you more overall satisfaction. With shows on DVD, you can just rip through a season in a few days and forget about it. When you watch a season over its entire run on television, you think about it, you can talk about it with other people - it's fun. The only good reasons I watch 24 anymore are because a lot of my friends watch it and the weekly threads in GAF are always entertaining.

Title: Re: Movie suggestions?

The same way one doesn't like any piece of art. Like Willco said, its all subjective. Clockwork never connected with me, and it feels almost sophomoric/amateurish for a Kubrick film. I get the feeling its the type of movie film students love to wank over. Which really surprises me, because I consider at least 3-4 of Kubrick's other films undeniable masterpieces.

So tonight I went to blockbuster to find Seven Samurai. No dice, they didn't have it. The lady at the register hadn't even fucking heard of it. I went to Best Buy and found a boxset. 40 fucking bucks for one movie. Goddamit.

I ended up with Animaniac's volume 1 instead.

Good choice.

I don't think I've seen an episode in over a decade. I should pick it up too.

While you're at it, jump off the highest building you can find. Head first.

Kill yourself. You don't hate on Animaniac's!  >:(

I loved Animaniacs, distinguished black fellow.

Pinky & The Brain was alright, too.

Freakazoid is basically God's gift to mid 90's cartoons.

 :-\

If blockbuster actually had the movies I want there wouldn't be a problem. There's just too many dvds to buy. Whenever I go get a dvd I don't know what the hell I want: a tv series or a movie. It is torture going to Best Buy, I swear.

I got a Blockbuster gift card. I'm HOPING they atleast have fucking Citizen Kane.

I don't think most rental chains have criterion's and a good chunk of the classics are criterion dvd's. If you want to be a film buff you gotta just handle having to pay 40-50 for a classic sometimes.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Solo on December 21, 2006, 01:45:20 PM
Don't get Citizen Kane. It's a landmark film in terms of technical filmmaking, and its astoundingly ahead of its time in that regard. As entertainment though, its possibly the most disappointing of all the classics Ive seen.

I lump classics into either "lived up/surpassed the hype" or "didnt meet expectations". Kane is one of the ones that falls into the latter category for me. If you want a classic worth its billing from that era, get Casablanca.

Citizen Kane sucks.
Casablanca vs Spidey 2. Go.

Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 21, 2006, 01:55:06 PM
Spider-Man 2 wins from an entertainment and spectacle standpoint, that's for damn sure.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Solo on December 21, 2006, 01:56:41 PM
Casablanca is much more entertaining and funny, features better writing, acting, and gets where its going faster. Oh, and its routinely near or at the top of "greatest ever" lists. All of which Spidey 2 is not.

Out of all of these movies suggested I don't know which I'd want to rent with this blockbuster gift card. Think I might go with Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Chinatown, or Casablanca.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.

Naw it's down to Taxi Driver, Casablanca, Chinatown, or Clockwork Orange.

I've seen both Batman Begins and Three Amigos.

That's a worthy suggestion Solo. I've wanted to see that.

I second Solo's nomination of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.  It's amazing.  I think Taxi Driver and A Clockwork Orange are quite possibly the most overrated films of all-time, but Casablanca lives up to its billing and Chinatown is ace.  Easily one of my favorites of all-time.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE film of all time Himuro, I cant recommend it strongly enough. Its perfection.

For what its worth, I also consider "The Trio" scene, from start to finish, to be the best scene in film history. Everything from the way Leone builds the tension, to the kinetic editing, to the rapid-fire cuts from long shots to extreme close-ups, and especially Morricone's score is absolutely perfect. I watch that scene pretty much weekly.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 21, 2006, 02:11:01 PM
Morricone's score is what sells it.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Solo on December 21, 2006, 02:13:41 PM
It's the whole package. But yeah, Morricone's work on Leone's films was godly. Leone's films were godly (save for A Fistful Of Dynamite, and various cuts of Once Upon A Time In America).

Which is why it always angers me to see one of these "best trilogy?" threads pop up, because without a doubt, people ALWAYS ignore the BEST one, the Dollars trilogy.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 21, 2006, 02:14:53 PM
I mentioned it last time and people said it wasn't a real trilogy :-\

I think, for pure entertainment, Once Upon a Time in the West is my favorite.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?

Haven't heard of The Dollars.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Solo on December 21, 2006, 02:17:16 PM
You're breaking my heart  :'(

A Fistful Of Dollars (1964)
For A Few Dollars More (1965)
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966)

Its a loose trilogy at best, with Eastwood's character being the only link between films (and even his name changes in each one), and Lee Van Cleef playing a role in 2 different films. All 3 are fuckawesome.

He is The Man With No Name, but people creat nicknames for him in each film.  I don't think he ever refers to himself.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Solo on December 21, 2006, 02:18:26 PM
Yeah, he doesnt have a name, persay. He just randomly gets referred to as Joe, Manco, and Blondie.

Okay. I was worried for a sec there. I was thinking I was going to be watching the last movie of a trilogy and that you were trying to set me up.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 21, 2006, 02:20:04 PM
Eastwood is such a badass in each one.  You'll see how a lot of modern directors have aped Leone or lifted entire sequences from the trilogy.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Solo on December 21, 2006, 02:20:58 PM
Technically, The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly is a prequel anyways.

And A Fistful Of Dollars is a remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo. A remake which (calling Willco!) bests the original.

And For A Few Dollars More is even better. Really, Leone improves by leaps and bounds in each one.

AFAD: 8/10
FAFDM: 8.5/10
TGTBATU: 10/10

They should have it, I mean, its fucking THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY.

Once Upon a Time in the West is more entertaining than all three, in my book, and bested only by The Good, The Bad and The Ugly in terms of filmmaking.

I have a funny relationship with In The West. I think its Leone's best film, in terms of his craft. Yet I like all 3 of the Dollars films more. I attribute it solely to casting. Bronson, Fonda, and Robards dont hold a candle to Eastwood, Wallach, and my boy "Hawk Eyes" Van Cleef in the western genre.

Also Himuro, when you start the movie and think "damn, Ive heard this music a billion times!", remember that this is the film it was written for.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?

I think Fonda is so awesome in that movie, though.

Harmonica is like a blueprint for the revenge-seeking, mysterious stranger archtype too.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Solo on December 21, 2006, 02:32:48 PM
I also think its Morricone's WORST Leone score. I mean, whats there is excellent, but there only seems to be 2 tracks, Cheyenne's theme and Harmonica's theme.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 21, 2006, 02:33:48 PM
All you need is Harmonica's theme.
Title: Re: Movie suggestions?
Post by: Solo on December 21, 2006, 02:34:51 PM
It gets repetitive after a while. Or course, I shouldnt REALLY say that, since the theme from TGTBATU gets played about 500 times in that film.

Honestly, whenever some stuffy blowhard critic hails Kane as the greatest film ever made, I can't help but take their opinions on films with a grain of salt. :lol
