Title: Favorite Artist?
Post by: Cheebs on April 19, 2010, 12:50:41 AM
NEED MORE ART THREADS AMIRITE? Seriously though those art debates made me realize no one at eb ever discusses "traditional art" really much at all.

And by favorite artist lets stick to the traditional forms like painters and sculptors and the like. Mine as implied elsewhere is Picasso. I have one of his reprints and have been lucky enough to see a few of his actual original paintings in person.

Must be in spoilers because it's far too big but the smaller one doesn't do it justice.

Typical that Cheebs' favorite artist is Picasso. Impressionism is my favorite form of traditional art.

Delacroix's my favorite.

Gustave Courbet
Claude Monet

My favorite painting?

I have sketched this before because I love it so much.

It's typical, curious why you'd predict that. I fell in love with Picasso paintings when I was pretty young and got a gigantic coffee table book of his work from my grandma when I was like 11-12. Starred at it for hours and hours.

Pop art and political posters are right after impressionism and post-impressionism for me.

I'm not even big on politics. But the posters of WWI, WWII, and USSR in their heyday are full of beautiful, beautiful paintings.

It's hard to say that I have a "favorite" artist.  It's like asking for a favorite color or a favorite music genre: there's a perfect color for every given situation and good music will be good music.  Different artists have different messages they try to convey and a passion and drive that defines the work they do to try and communicate that message.  It is that process, the intentions, their philosophy, their ability to communicate that message to audiences that I feel makes them great.

Over time aesthetics have kind of taken a backseat for me.  There is definitely something to be said about an artists mastery and understanding of technical art but it is something that I don't find necessary.  As they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".  Even if work looks hideous at one time during a person's life tastes change and that same work may look incredible during another time in that same person's life.  I do however admire artists that consider human factors when creating their work: people change, screw it or use it.

One artist comes to mind when this question is asked and its Zdzislaw Beksinski. His art feels like they were picked out of a dream, very ethereal and I dig that. Tends to be very macabre but his surreal work that isn't as macabre is way more haunting and appealing to me. I absolutely love his use of dull browns to really push the more vibrant primary colors forward. Some of his stuff...

I didn't know this was a topic for just traditional artists. I'm just wondering whether people see the word "artists" and see Cheebs offered a painter and are sticking solely with that, or if these painters really are all of your favorite artists of all time. I love me some Picasso but I prefer the works of Godard, Hitchcock, Scorsese etc.

Then again I am a film cigarillo :pimp

Hey Blue, since you like Beksinski, do you also like Francis Bacon?

I came across a lot of his stuff while I was in Europe last year. Very dark and surreal. You might also like some of Odilon Redon's stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions, GS. I haven't looked into either but I'm definitely liking Redon's work.

Maybe one of you guys can help me.

There's a painting I really liked that I saw somewhere in Europe - might have been the Vatican. It was supposedly based on a biblical story, and it shows a woman cutting off a man's head. I thought it was Jael and Sisera, but that's something else. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

<3 Caravaggio. I sent a postcard to my friend's office that had his "Medusa" on the front.

Edit: Yes, it's Judith and Holofernes by Artimesia Gentileschi, and it's in the Uffizi, not the Vatican:

I know it's kind of cliche to say Dali, but he has a lot of great stuff beyond what you can see in any poster shop.

Caspar David Friedrich is amazing. I saw an exhibit of his one time, though I can't remember where. I think he has some stuff in the National Gallery in London.

The Abbey in the Oakwood:

Here's another that I really dig, it's called Lost Illusions by Charles Gleyre, spoilering it because of the size:
