Do you prefer the first movement, with the signature guitar riff, written by Clapton or the second half, with the piano coda, composed by Jim Gordon? Obviously the song is terrific from beginning to end, but for some reason I like the piano movement more.
The song was inspired by Pattie Boyd, who was George Harrison's wife at the time. Harrison was also Clapton's good friend. A year earlier he wrote a love song for Pattie, one of the most famous love songs in rock history, 'Something'.

I think George got the best of Pattie.

What does that have to do with Layla?

Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.

It has nothing to do with Layla. Isn't It a Pity is fucking amazing

The guitar riff (I assume we're talking Derek and the Dominoes here, and not the unplugged version) by a country mile.

Pretty much everything about the song. It's magic to me.
I love the opening riff. I love the desperation in his voice. I love the clalm of the verses, met with the roar of the chorus. I love the way he sings the line "like a fool, I fell in love with you, turn my whole world upside down". I love the emotion of it all. It's one of those songs that just sound very real, like it was written about something very real.
I also love the beautiful piano ending.
I guess if I had to pick a single favorite moment of the song, it would be that line I quoted above.

This song fits that montage in Goodfellas sooooo fuckin perfectly. 8)

I really like the beginning, but I think the best part is when it breaks into the piano.

I agree.

I like both equally, to be honest.
The beginning bleeds badass, and then it fades into meaningful piano.... the best of both worlds.
