I've yet to even finish Twilight Princess. Zelda needs to go away for a while. New Star Fox with Arwing only missions please.

I'll yawn because Nintendo will prove, yet again, that they are creatively bankrupt.

All the Mario games were very unique until this generation. Well, except Mario 3 and Mario World, but those were different enough where you could tell which was which. If you show a clip of MG and MG2 back to back, you'd be hard pressed to tell which was the original and which was the sequel.

Funny how the games that would be best suited for the Wii remote have yet to see sequels:  Wave Race, 1080, F-Zero, and Star Fox. Then again I'm sure they'd copy the stupid flying mechanics of Wii Sports Resort for Star Fox. Who wants to hold their wii remote like a 5 year old with a paper airplane?

I don't want F-Zero on the Wii. The next F-Zero deserves to be in HD.

Personally, I would much rather have yet another OOT retread than a collection of annoying minigames and constant gimmicks like the DS games were... Spirit Tracks in particular was awful, and probably the worst non CD-I Zelda.

I'll walk by the Zelda line and shrug at a bunch of pathetic Ntards wasting their ENTIRE DAY at E3 just to play Zelda for 2 minutes.

For the first couple hours, sure.  Game ramps up considerably after the second dungeon.  It's no Majora's Mask, but it's certainly better than Ocarina.

ooooooooooo manabyte is so cool for shrugging off nintards.  As he goes to fap to some Disney videogame.

If you have to wait more than five minutes to play anything at E3, it's really not worth it.

The Nintendo booth is a joke. You should just walk through and look at the waggle shit, not wait in line for six fucking hours.

Yea, the idea of wasting an entire day in line at E3 sounds ridiculous. Especially if the payoff is 2 minutes of buggy gameplay while being aggressively watched by Nintendo reps.

I remember going apeshit when TP was announced and guess what: I still haven't played it.

I used to get VIP access to the Nintendo booth because of some charity work I helped them with.  Someone would walk me in in front of whining nintards who had been standing in line all day and then kick people off machines.  One dude complained so loudly after I got to cut in front of him for SMG that he was escorted out before getting to play anything. :lol

Hopefully TP's critics learn to appreciate TP and its fab dungeon design. I can understand disliking certain elements of TP, like the OoT fan wank, but other elements in the game stood out so much in terms of quality I have no fucking clue how anyone could NOT be satisfied by that game.

you know i always tought zelda was just ok... i never got why everyone it's like "OMG BEST GAME EVER" especialy OOT which has barely any music in it

i liked tp more than your average zelda because i tought it had more personality, like you had this dungeon that was in a frozen castle upside a mountain and you had this giant yeti help you, that's a lot more cool (pun unintended) than just putting a random of elemental stuff (fire temple, water temple, forest temple) and call it a day

awakening is also pretty cool but really there was something really charming about old nintendo gameboy title,i can't really put my finger on it

the original zelda is what always got me stumbled the most... the hell? this is considered a classic? two annoying looping melody repeated in the whole game and all you basicaly get to do is to poke monster with a stick?

The original game was great because of its exploration and scope. It's not as good these days though.

OoT is cited as "best game ever" because it's the first example of a 3d game that contains almost all elements that are present in modern 3d gaming: vast landscape, target/lock on system, non-flimsy controls (people forget how bad early 3d controls were), insane sense of scope with 9999x things to do. It serves as a template for modern 3d games and took the industry by storm.

Have you played Majora's Mask, magus? It's full of things like that.

Also, OoT's soundtrack is amazing.

TP had maybe two dungeons worth speaking of. The Temple of Time was a great one, as was the Ice Temple. Outside of that, I've almost completely forgotten the dungeons. I had to YouTube Arbiter's Grounds to remember wtf Himumu was talking about.

One of the reasons why I didn't play WW until so late (2006?) was because of how hated it was at NeoGAF. Needless to say, I'll never trust e-opinions ever again. :lol

WW was flawed, but inspired. TP wasn't as flawed, but it was boring, drab shit that I didn't even finish. The graphics were freakin' terrible in some spots, jesus. I just don't understand wtf TP-lovers are thinking. What part of the game is better than OoT or whatever to make it the best Zelda? I remember this scene where you were in wolf form and there was this other wolf spirit or something, and they both started howling together, and it was supposed to be some grand melodic howling thing that's supposed to move the player emotionally. You know like movies do. I was staring at my television going "What the fuck is this shit?"
I should have known it was going to be shit from then on, but I kept going on. That's how it always is, man. I was like a woman who kept getting beat up by the husband, but stayed with him, kept on forgiving, kept on thinking that ultimately I was going to get a good experience out of it.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Boring As Fuck Contrived Stale Drab Brown Piece of Shit Princess.

Only the boss fights were good, but that's only a small portion of the game. Dungeons were good I guess.

I also liked sailing in WW.

TP felt uninspired in some areas, in others it felt refreshing. Like the mansion dungeon that Magus brought up, or the desert temple Arbiter's Grounds. The first half actually stands on its own quite a lot story-wise. It doesn't rely on tried and true Zelda traditions and even features someone who's not Ganon as the villain. It isn't until half way when the story goes bonkers and uninspired and tries to present OoT fan wank at every turn, but at the expense of some of the best dungeons in the series. If you think Arbiter's Grounds, City of the Sky, and Temple of Time were just okay dungeons I don't know what to say.

We came to a consensus when TP came out that Arbiter's Grounds is probably the best Zelda dungeon DUNGEON in the series. It actually felt like a dungeon!

1986.

In 1986 Zelda was an amazing game and there wasn't anything like it anywhere, but I agree it's pretty shit now and I could never go back to it for more than a few minutes other than to relive some nostalgia.

Same goes for the NES version of Rygar.

Agreed. One of my main complaints about TP is that I don't remember the music at all.

And City of the Sky was just okay. I never understood the hype around that one dungeon. I expected a lot more after seeing everyone gushing about it.

I actually remember OoT's music. Some of Wind Waker's too. Therefore, they had the best soundtracks from the 3D Zelda games. LttP was better though.

What would be a non stupid transportation? No transportation at all?! I loved that boat, sailing around and spying islands, platforms and subs on the horizon was awesome, definitely not too much sailing for me.

I'm looking forward to a new Zelda if only because I'm really interested to see if they can string out the old formula once again and also make something I really enjoy. I don't really rate their chances of that though.

TP had maybe two dungeons worth speaking of. The Temple of Time was a great one, as was the Ice Temple. Outside of that, I've almost completely forgotten the dungeons. I had to YouTube Arbiter's Grounds to remember wtf Himumu was talking about.

We came to a consensus when TP came out that Arbiter's Grounds is probably the best Zelda dungeon DUNGEON in the series. It actually felt like a dungeon!

They should use some transportation that does not revolve around it like that stupid train in Zelda ST. Worst integration ever.

Sailing wasn't all that bad, but there was too much dead space in the ocean. And omg the Triforce fetchquest... easily the lowest point of the game. I stopped playing for a while because of that shit.

I'd love another console Zelda game with WWs style though. Too much sailing and not enough dungeons were my only problems with the game. It could've been the best 3D Zelda.

Yeah I dunno wtf you guys are talking about saying the OoT soundtrack is trash. The soundtrack to that game, while midi and in terrible quality, is great stuff. I don't think there's been a Zelda game with better tunes. Wind Waker had like two memorable songs, and TP had none.

Yeah I do remember that dragging a bit but I still enjoyed it.

I can't think of what sort of transport I'd have Link use in the next game. I don't like the horse and haven't played spirit tracks but the train gets dissed real bad. If they stick with medieval themes only hero worthy transportation I can think of which would fit with Zelda is the horse or a boat or something magical like a flying carpet or maybe some other kind of beast.

I think all 3D Zelda games are wonderful and all have great and memorable scores and dungeons in their own right.  Some do certain aspects better than others.  Shock and awe.

With the exception of the two DS games, every other Capcom or Nintendo made Zelda game are my favorite games.  Hell, I even enjoyed the two DS games even though logic tells me they sucked.  I'll be excited for and buy whatever the next Zelda game is, whether it is a new direction or another OoT.

And 3D Dot Game Heroes rosebuds the two DS Zelda games.  Nintendo should give up on handheld/2D Zeldas and hand them to more competent Japanese devs like From or Capcom.

And I just realized I remember very little of Twilight Princess' music.  Hidden Village is awesome, especially because that part in the game was Link cleaning house in a western town.   Kicks ass in Links Crossbow Training too.

Post by: TakingBackSunday on May 12, 2010, 02:43:54 AM
Eh, it wouldn't make a difference.  The handheld Zelda teams, currently, are a mix of the old Capcom team and EAD noobies, all with the usual Nintendo figurehead strong-armed direction.  It would be the same deal if they farmed it out to a third-party developer.

whatever they're doing, they sure know how to kill what makes me like Zelda games.  Spirit Tracks had entertaining Dungeons and some nice puzzles but the pacing and amount of bullshit you needed to deal with was unacceptable.  If I wasn't a Zelda-tard I would have stopped early on.  The most absurd part is that Spirit Tracks is a portable game.  Like someone would want to spend their commute or elementary school lunchtime to endlessly ride a train.

is it like a DS wide thought process, btw? Mario and Luigi 3 was also pretty bad.  I don't remember the last "traditional" game on the DS that I enjoyed.  At the same time, Picross 3D is fucking awesome, as are most of the puzzle games Nintendo puts out.

Aw man, I loved Mario and Luigi 3.  2 was pretty awful, but I like 3 more than the first...

I'm not very critical on the DS because I spend so much time on it before I go to bed.  Lots of titles that I've enjoyed in these last few years have been mostly on the DS.

edit: yes yes, nintard, get it out of the way

It doesn't rely on tried and true Zelda traditions and even features someone who's not Ganon as the villain. It isn't until half way when the story goes bonkers and uninspired and tries to present OoT fan wank at every turn

Wait, what? I think you have that backwards, himu. The first half (third?) followed OoT's temple template very closely. It wasn't until later that it actually started becoming its own game (at least until the very end with the very lame plot twist).

As for the new Zelda, I dunno what people complain about being an "OoT retread", but if by that they mean having a shitload of awesome dungeons, then I'll gladly drink to that.

Aonuma's great at certain things, but he always botches up some crucial aspect in every one of his games. This new Zelda's gonna be headed by someone else, so hopefully this guy'll have the chops to do Zelda justice.

I disagree. First half is better story-wise because of Zant. Second half sucks story-wise because of Ganonitis. First half felt like a love letter to OoT more than anything else. It, however, didn't feel like complete fan wank, though. Second half is definitely more OoT-esque due to the inclusion of Ganondorf and the Temple of Time.

Like I said, the only thing that'll get me back into Zelda again is if they make another Wind Waker, and I'm not talking about some bullshit DS game like Phantom Hourglass.  I want a full on sequel.

Color me surprised if that ever happens.

I really do hope it's cellshaded. I consider TP to be a GC game, so its visuals were fine to me. Another TP level game won't cut it visually.

Is this really likely? The teaser art suggests otherwise, but then again it was revealed last E3, but I doubt they'd change the game's overall look in just one year.

They did with Wind Waker. Spaceworld video was a year before the Wind Waker unveil, right?

I can't remember a damn thing about TP.  To me, that was the most souless, forgetable Zelda game on a console since Zelda 2.  Wind Waker was infintely more enjoyable.
An excuse thats actually worse than Nostalgia? I think so.

I really like Twilight Princess and soulless is a good description.  I'd probably say unambitious myself, but I take both as the same idea.  It seems like there was no creativity in designing the game outside of wanting to recreate Ocarina of Time.  Some Japanese dude sat down in a room and said "Ocarina of Time was great and everyone loved that! let's do that again."

It's like how the new Prince of Persia game is going back to the Sands of Time style after the 2008 Prince of Persia.

Yep, even as someone who thought TP was the best game of 2006, it is an ultimately soulless experience compared to other Zelda's.

But Zelda > other games so :patel

How? Ocarina didn't rip off LttP, it took its basic idea and evolved it. TP takes many elements of OoT and regurgitates them.

Well I certainly didn't intend for my inner n-cigarillo to be overtaken by nostalgia, but when I used the term "soulless" I basically was implying what Himuro stated.  TP felt like a rehash.  But then again Nintendo was just giving what a lot of their army of man children wanted or at least thought they wanted.

To me it felt like with Wind Waker and Majora's Mask they were like "HEY! EVERYONE LOVES THIS, RIGHT?! WE REALLY BUST OUR ASSES TO BRING THESE GAMES OUT" "BOOOOOO WE WANT ADULT LINK AND WE WANT HIM NOW" so they made TP and took all of the more fanciful and famous parts from OoT and LttP and crammed it in one game.

It would be hard to find someone who would find Mario Sunshine or Mario 64 to be better than Mario Galaxy.

Nostalgia isn't as bad as you people seem to make it out to be.  It's hard to judge old games (especially the N64 games that age poorly) while taking into account the release.  If you stack Twilight Princess up with OoT today, there is a lot about Twilight Princess that is better, but Twilight Princess was released in 2006 and OoT in 1998.  Just read prole's quote to understand how big OoT was back then!! (fast forward 12 years: "Just read prole's quote to understand how big the iPad was back then!! Magical!"  :'()  Eight years later when Twilight Princess is released, things haven't changed much.

and just because: I played Twilight Princess 3 times and really like that game.  OoT is my favorite game ever and part of it is nostalgia.  2D and 3D Zelda games are my favorite games.

Okay, the more I think about the more potential it has. I don't know what the fuck he means by complicated though. Maybe it's like Galaxy where the simplicity comes from the controls compared to the past. What if the sword girl is every item in the game and rather than unlocking new abilities, you have every ability you need to beat the game right from the beginning and the game builds up on these features the more you'd play. That'd result in more simplicity in terms of item management/controls, while at the same time evolving the Zelda formula into the stratosphere..which is what I want from this new title.

Hasn't Peter Moly-Fable guy been trying to do this? the whole one button "accessible" combat system and leading the player with a line on the floor?

I think a lot of the "complications" that could be had with Zelda could be dealt with like they did for Mario.  Mario 64 and Sunshine both have terrible cameras and Galaxy came out and they gave you less control of the camera but it always seemed to give you a good view.  I mean, Z-trigger was the way to have 3D combat in 1998; all the combat systems of the 3D console Zelda games are very similar.  They have things like motion plus now and they could just have the camera pointed at the enemy when you approach him, then instead of jumping around, it could be a matter of slashing vertically or horizontally (similar to how Wii Sports Resort sword fighting works, with a bit more control).

and yeah, they could do with less items that have more uses.  Things that won't really hurt what the focus should be (as in: exploration, puzzles, action, adventure).

Nintendo needs to make a "New Legend of Zelda" - no gimmicks, just make it similar to LTTP/LA but on Wii.

If you have a PS3, check out 3D Dot Game Heroes because that is pretty much that (without the "but on Wii" part).

I'm just saying that you have different devs trying to make these games more accessible.  Even Arkham Asylum was all about that, but in that game they kept it simple if you wanted to get through it while letting better players get that rhythm going.   I'm not at all suggesting it should be in a game like Zelda, only that these are "solutions" from other games.
Title: Re: Will you say wow when Nintendo rolls out the new Zelda at E3?

I really hope that in this case accessibility equates to giving you a sword, a shield and a bow and letting you go your way like the original zelda but apparently miyamoto's only talking about controls

My Zelda rankings cause I'm awesome:

Majora's Mask > Oracle games > Twilight Princess > Ocarina of Time > Link's Awakening > The Wind Waker > A Link to the Past > The Minish Cap > Four Swords Adventures (awesome game) > Spirit Tracks > Phantom Hourglass > The Legend of Zelda > Adventure of Link

Phantom Hourglass to me was a proof of concept – a really crappy one at that, though.  It proved to me that the touch controls were a viable method of control for a Zelda title, but everything else around the controls was so bland for a Nintendo game.

Spirit Tracks manages to have better level design and gameplay mechanics by a significant margin, yet it is nearly killed by it's terrible overworld method of transportation.  In fact, it DID kill it for me – I never beat it because of that.

Spirit Tracks is actually a good game when you're not in your fucking train.

I don't know, that never really bothered me.
Title: Re: Will you say wow when Nintendo rolls out the new Zelda at E3?
Post by: cool breeze on May 15, 2010, 12:28:25 PM
BrandNew is giving Spirit Tracks too much credit.  As someone who finished the game and got everything, it is more true to say that only the dungeons are good, and not so much the boss fights at the end.  The side quests  are almost all based around the train, sometimes even making you drive slower and in patterns to not upset passengers or ruin cargo.  The "trial" cave type game in this turd and they make you fight the same boring bosses over and over, which I should mention is ridiculously easy and you get shit reward for it.  The few side puzzle areas are decent, but again, the prizes you get are crummy treasures used to upgrade your train, and it's not like it makes you train faster or anything.  The ratio of shit to entertainment is so off.  If the game wasn't called Zelda, I probably would have stopped.  You literally spend the majority of the game riding a train where you barely need to pay attention.  It and Phantom Hourglass are easily the worst Zelda games ever made.

Another thing about Spirit Tracks is that it effectively removed ALL exploration from Zelda.  I think exploration and the sense of adventure is one of the reasons that my favorite games are Zelda games.  Spirit Tracks had none of that, or if you want to be picky, you can explore to find rabbits to capture...on your train  :-\

If you honestly think these games are better than Zelda 1 and 2, I think maybe you should check those games out first.  Both games are great but I can understand disliking them if you're really against games that don't follow the LTTP formula.

I didn't have problems with the controls either.  Sometimes in Spirit Tracks when you would draw paths for Zelda, but that's pretty much it.

oh shit, I just remembered the other thing I hated a lot about Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks (the flute too, but that's all I'll say about that POS).  Phantom Hourglass seemed like an attempt to cash in on PotC movies and Linebeck was basically Jack Sparrow.  Spirit Tracks was much worse because the inspiration for that game was seemingly uguu filth anime garbage.  Ugh, it was so terrible.  Outside of the reoccuring scenes where Zelda would just "UGUU~", the main villain was straight out of a Naruto filler movie or some shit.

I play Zelda I and II at least once every year, and I just find them a chore to play through.  It's not that they're bad games, it's just that, like every original game from the NES, it's incredibly dated and relatively unpolished.

I'm not disagreeing, but there is a charm to that, I think.  I'm sure it was more because of limitations than design, but it still is a lot more open for exploration than later Zelda games.  I remember after Zero Mission came out, I was hoping they'd do the same for Zelda 1.  As much as I like Zelda 1, someone playing it for the first time would get pissed off at not knowing where you can blow a hole in the wall and things like that.

I said relatively.  Polished for an NES game, sure, but it's hard going back to a lot of old NES games without saying to myself "ugh, I'd just rather play the SNES sequel."

Super Mario Bros. 1-3 are the only games I can think of that still remain polished even by today's standards.  Megaman games as well, I guess.

That's unfortunate that you have so much trouble going back to play classics. I can enjoy NES games, mainly because their gameplay is really simple and accessible, and they're fairly quick to start as they lack any large quantities of story or character development. I never played the NES as a kid, so it's fun to go back and play classics with a fresh mind.

I had made a thread looking for the best NES games and I got a lot of good shit out of it.

NES games are uniformly unpolished.  Even the megaman games had shit like copious slowdown and unbalanced weapon abilities.  Zelda 1 is a little obtuse for its own good, metroid 1 is being lost in a game with the same non discernable background and shitty controls, etc.

I don't even like Mario 3 that much anymore. Its ok, but often it just feels gimmicky.  See flight suits, frog suits, minigames.

My Zelda rankings cause I'm awesome:

Majora's Mask > Oracle games > Twilight Princess > Ocarina of Time > Link  Link's Awakening > The Wind Waker > A Link to the Past > The Minish Cap > Four Swords Adventures (awesome game) > Spirit Tracks > Phantom Hourglass > The Legend of Zelda > Adventure of Link

that's some pretty good rankings except for some minor tweaks. Here are mine:

Majoras Mask > Wind Waker > OoT > Oracle Games > Link LA> Zelda III > Zelda II > Minish Cap > 4 swords > Zelda 1 > Zelda TP > Zelda PH > Zelda ST

And yes, I think Zelda ST is the worst zelda I ever played because the train is fucking boring and the train = the overworld. Worst overworld ever

Mario is the most overrated game series ever

That's a tough one. Yeah probably. Out of all the Mario games I've played, there are two really solid games, and the rest are either just good, or completely forgettable. Most of Nintendo's IPs are similar, but because it's Nintendo, the schlock will be remembered.

SMB1 = aged and dated
SMB2 = is not even a mario game, it's another game with mario skin
SMB3 = overrated, maybe 20 good levels out eleven of billion
SMBW = legitimately great game
Yoshi's Island = one of the best platformers ever
Mario 64 = overall mediocre game, great ideas, some good levels though
Mario Sunshine = underrated, one of the best 3d platformers ever, stomps all over 64
NSMB = mediocre
Mario Galaxy = masterpiece

And people have the audacity to say this is the best platformer series :lol

Zelda 1 - great premise, dated gameplay, needs modern version badly, the basis for almost every single action-adventure game, including games like GTA
Zelda 2 - great premise, high difficulty, wouldn't say it's really great though
Zelda 3: LTTP - great game, gets too much credit, though because....
Zelda: Link's Awakening - is probably the best 2d Zelda and is rarely mentioned due to LTTP, both are great though
Zelda: Ocarina of Time - the basis for most modern 3d games, fantastic gameplay and scope still to this day
Zelda: Majora's Mask - the Zelda formula perfected, and arguably the greatest action-adventure game
Zelda: Wind Waker - great game, downgrade from OoT and MM but still great
Zelda: Twilight Princess - great, but ultimately soulless game that recycles many elements from past games, feels been there, done that. Proves the Zelda formula needs retooling to be fresh again
Zelda: Minish Cap - slightly above average
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - average
Zelda: Spirit Tracks - what I have played is probably the worst Zelda ever

Zelda stands as Nintendo's greatest series. Out all of the games they've made for Zelda, I have enjoyed just about every single game immensely. I have not played the Oracle games and I'm ashamed.

Incorrect. Sonic is as varied in quality as Mario, and far far worse.

Sonic 1 - Masterpiece
Sonic 2 - Overrated but decent
Sonic 3 - Good
Sonic and Knuckles - Good
Sonic 3 and Knuckles - Masterpiece
Sonic 3d Blast - Shit
Sonic Adventure - Mediocre
Sonic Adventure 2 - Poop
Sonic Heroes - Poop
Shadow the Hedgehog - Shit
Sonic 06 - Diarrhea
Sonic Advanced - Decent
Sonic Rush - Mediocre
Sonic Unleashed - Miediocre

I like the same amount out Sonic games as I do Mario games. Both are overrated, but Sonic moreso because there hasn't been a good Sonic game in almost 20 years but people still try to convince themselves that Sonic Adventure was good.

Because it's aged and dated doesn't mean it's not fun. It's just incredibly basic.

I play Zelda I and II at least once every year, and I just find them a chore to play through.  It's not that they're bad games, it's just that, like every original game from the NES, it's incredibly dated and relatively unpolished.
Wait, people finished The Adventure of Link? More than once?

SMB1 = awesome game, quite possibly the most influential game ever, so much fun to speedrun.
SMB2 = it's fun to play but not quite on the level of other Mario games. I like picking up and throwing shit, and it's pretty challenging. Final dungeon is fantastic.
SMB2j = plays more like a masochistic rom hack of Mario 1, meh
SMB3 = fantastic game, second best Mario game... so many secrets, awesome technical achievement for the NES, plus KURIBO'S SHOE
SMBW = best Mario game ever
Yoshi's Island = awesome game with lots of gameplay variation, some of the best boss fights in the Mario series, neat graphical style. Not too crazy about the collectathon stuff in the levels, or the fact that some of the levels drag on for a bit
Mario 64 = great ideas, showed the potential of 3D gaming, but a lot of levels felt kinda empty, and the controls weren't nearly as tight as the rest of the series. Not my favorite game in the series.
Mario Sunshine = great FLUDD-less level, everything else was kinda blah... didn't like how you had to babysit the camera so much, nor some of the fetch-questy stuff. Weak finale. An improvement over 64 but doesn't hold a patch on the 2D games.
NSMB = was left wanting with this one... feels like a step back from Mario 3 and World.
Mario Galaxy = probably the best 3D Mario, interesting art direction, fun platforming, it just takes a bit too long to ramp up in difficulty, and some of the tacked on waggle levels are stupid
NSMBWii = awesome level design, challenging, best Mario since the SNES days. Only complaints are the unnecessary waggle and no CC support

Zelda 1 - my favorite game when I was little, really influenced my gameplay tastes. Love the huge, nonlinear world filled with tons of secrets around every corner. Game is dated nowadays, i.e. no 8-direction movement and very obtuse in parts.
Zelda 2 - meh, I didn't care as much for the sidescrolling, the frustrating combat (against Darknuts and shit), the grindy sections. There are much better sidescrolling ARPGs out there (Dragon's Curse!) Would love to see a much more refined take on this game in the future, though.
Zelda 3: LTTP - fantastic game, my favorite Zelda. Set the tone for the series to follow.
Zelda: Link's Awakening - another absolutely amazing game, plus the best story in the series. Some great puzzles, lots of secrets, a technical achievement for the platform. Just suffers a bit due to platform choice.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time - very enjoyable, and certainly ahead of its time... I only wish I played all the way through this when it was new, instead of in 2003 or 4 or whenever I finally got around to finishing it. Graphics and the sluggish framerate don't hold up though.
Zelda: Majora's Mask - much more refined take on OOT, plays a lot smoother. Not too crazy about the day/night cycle, but at least it was something different. Don't like the lack of dungeons or the "stalk the townspeople to do the sidequests", or the amounts of minigames present... Played this when it came out on VC too.
Zelda: Wind Waker - slow to start, lacking in dungeons (but what's there is good save the pirate's fortress stealth stuff), awful Triforce hunt, plus sailing is oh so boring. My least favorite 3D Zelda. Environments look great, but I don't like the char design at all.
Zelda: Twilight Princess - awesome game, unfortunately the start was slow, and the game seemed to forget about the story after the first 4 dungeons. Dungeons were a high point for 3D Zelda. Probably my fave 3D Zelda.
Zelda: Minish Cap - good game, but I felt it was missing something. Namely, more use of the big->small gimmick (the Mazaal boss was excellent). Didn't like the kinstone fetchquests.
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - not a fan of the touch screen controls, nor returning to the Ocean King temple over and over. Short dungeons were an interesting change of pace for the series, but one that I don't particularly like (since dungeons are usually my favorite part of Zelda).
Zelda: Spirit Tracks - absolutely awful. Traversing the overworld with the train takes forever. Sidequests are no fun at all, since they also involve the train. Inaccurate touch screen controls that don't do what you want them to do half the time.
Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages - great games, with challenging combat and some of the most difficult puzzles in 2D Zelda. Main problems are, that the games don't have too many new ideas between them, and are a bit on the forgettable side. And overworld traversal can be annoying. Definitely worth playing though.

Sonic 1 - Awesome, although it has its share of slow parts (the Labyrinth Zone for one). Great aesthetics and music, and a great start to a series.
Sonic 2 - A totally refined take on the first game. Some great and varied levels, awesome music, only problem is it starts to drag by the time you hit the middle of the Metropolis Zone. A Save Game feature would've been nice.
Sonic 3 - Loved this game even more than 1 or 2... mainly due to the music I think. Though it's obvious that it's only one piece of a whole...
Sonic and Knuckles - Didn't care for it as much as any of the other Sonics... levels just weren't as interesting to me, nor was the music as good.
Sonic 3+Knuckles - Absolutely incredible, the high point of the Sonic series.

The rest - I'm trying to forget... Rush 1 was alright though.

It's just incredibly basic.

Well, shit, I wonder why?

This post makes no sense as games like Mega Man 3 and Bionic Commando are hardly basic in terms of level design. When I say basic, I mean levels and gameplay, not just controls. That said, it was the first game I ever played so it has a giant place in my heart and will never get old.

SMB1 - Amazing, a timeless classic
SMB2 - Not as good as the first but still pretty good
SMB3 - Pretty good
SMW - Awesome platformer is awesome
Yoshi's Island - Great marriage of graphics and gameplay
SM64 - All-time classic, drops some of the platforming but I love the added adventure element
SMS - Abstract platformer stages are awesome, but FLOOD is too gimmicky for the rest of the game to be as good
SMG - Platformer perfection, drops some of the adventure elements of the two previous titles but that's not a bad thing\
NSMB - Fun the first time through, but no desire to play again

Sonic 1 - Great platformer, requires some skill
Sonic 2 - Refinement of the gameplay basics established by the original, Casino Night Zone is one of the best 2D platformers levels ever
Sonic 3 - Great platformer, never played it as much as the first two [MJ music :rock]
Sonic and Knuckles - Really good, popping it onto Sonic 3 ups the ante even further
Sonic Adventure - Decent game and is the best 3D Sonic, didn't like it as much ten years later
Sonic Adventure 2 - Started okay, went downhill rapidly

I don't see where everyone is getting Majora's Mask as the best Zelda game.  Yeah, it was a little more polished than OoT, but the game play was horrible.  Part of the fun for me in Zelda games, has always been having time to explore the world and take my time in completing the quests.  In MM, there wasn't time to get one fucking thing done.  I got into a malicious mood 2/3 of the way into the game and started letting the world end and watching 3 of the giants get crushed as they tried to stop the moon from crashing into the world...

I've never played any of the Zelda's except for the consoles.  My ranking for those would be:

Ocarina of Time > The Wind Waker > Twilight Princess > Majora's Mask >  A Link to the Past > The Legend of Zelda > Four Swords Adventures > Adventure of Link

All of Majora's Mask's dungeons are better than their Ocarina counterparts, save for maybe the Forest dungeon.

Snowhead Temple > Ice Cavern (or if you want to think mountain based, Fire Temple
Great Bay Temple > Water Dungeon
Stone Tower > Shadow Temple

Yeah. It has a lot of sidequests, but you can't miss any. Just talk to everyone. If there's one that you can't do, most likely you have to do another sidequest to trigger it. I beat the game and collected every mask when I was 13. I didn't have anyone who I could talk with about it though. A lot of Zelda fans skipped MM. :(

OOT and LA are my favorites.

I'd like to see a Zelda that actually brings Hyrule to life. No vast sea or barren wasteland. I understand the game is going to have to be easily initially for kids, but I'd like to see some even harder dugeons as the game progresses, with game play beyond moving blocks and shit. And optional dungeons that are hard as shit, sort of like some of the SMG levels.

And I'd prefer this to be for the PC

You may be mistaking FSA for the Four Sword mode in the GBA LTTP port; that required more than one person.  Four Swords Adventure single player works really well.  If you played Minish Cap, controlling the three other characters kinda like it did in that game.  You control all for characters and have the option to go into formations and such.  Obviously it is much more fun with friends, but I've only managed to work that out like once or twice because of how absurd he circumstances of getting it working were.

there is also an odd effect in single player where entering houses would open a small window and display GBA graphics instead of the much nicer Gamecube ones.  The way it works in multiplayer is that everyone moves around the overworld on the TV and entering buildings puts the image on your Gameboy's screen.  Gimmicky stuff that could have just been handled with split screen, more or less.

I'm hoping Nintendo learns about online gaming by next gen and puts out a sequel, or even just a version with online co-op.

I've only played the GC Four Swords on multiplayer, that's why I was mistaken. Never played the GBA one. Are the dungeons completely different?

Don't remember.  I only played the GBA Four Swords once for about 10 minutes.

Yessss. Better than any 3D Zelda. Hell, I think I even had more fun with Four Swords on GC than Twilight Princess

Not altogether shocking, because Four Swords Adventures was a fucking awesome game, even in single player.

I would have liked to try it more, but the problem is that none of my friends growing up were into Zelda (or Mario) games and didn't own LTTP on GBA.  I played with some random guy at a school lunch and it was awkward.  They all had the GBA->Gamecube cable things because of that Final Fantasy game.

when you finish one of the game, you get a password to use in the other one (so if you finish, ages you get a password for season and if you finish season you get a password for ages) if you start the game with a password they hamfist ganon in the plot and you get to fight him AFTER you finish

they designed a bunch of puzzles and traps and the level generator picks some of them and puts them together to make a level.  it's fun but there aren't that many different obstacles.  also the game only has three or four levels and you're supposed to play through them three times, with each playthough getting a little more difficult.  it can get kinda repetitive.

One more week.

I've never been so excited for a game I know nothing about while at the same time holding an equal amount of a caution.

I have a feeling they'll make it first person...

I read the entire gaf thread. People who are saying TWW structure is different from OoT structure and flow are kidding themselves. It's the same shit, but you're in a boat. MM is the only 3d Zelda with a different flow.

Also, I agree with mudkip in that he says I'm tired with the old shit we've become accustomed to.

See a torch? Light it.
See a switch? Put something on top of it.
See some protrusion in the ceiling? Use hookshot.
See a crack in the wall? Use a bomb.

The whole structure has become canned and it needs new life. I want something completely new and based on the pre-release talk of the game they're trying to do just that.

If it's first person, so be it, so long as it's different and actually good and doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator (meaning, I hope it's not as easy as WW or TP).

Give Zelda to western dev studio! Like you did with Metroid and Prime was born (98% on Gamerankings).

Give Zelda to...

Miyamoto is worried about the motion controls making the game "too complex" for the Japanese casual audience, and yet you think its going to be in first person?

Tiesto, you really think they'd do that? Galaxy isn't New Super Mario. New Super Mario Bros. is. If anything they should go the Mario route and create two different types of Zelda games. One 2d-esque and one 3d.

He didn't say the motion controls would be too complex. He said that ZELDA has gotten too complex. The numerous items, going into a menu to change your shit constantly, he wants a more simplistic control scheme and way of getting things done. First person would allow that.

I think a first person Zelda would be an interesting change for the series. What I'd LOVE is for both a first person Zelda and a new Four Swords to be announced. Neither will probably happen, and we'll get the same old third person 3D Zelda with Motion+ support.
