The Playstation was an amazing feat of game. So many instant classics, just as many sleeper hits, and more than a console's fair share of quirky niche titles for all to enjoy. I've recently been playing tons of Playstation 1 games, namely Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Mega Man Legends and Final Fantasy IX. I always love going back to PS1, because it's an old console that receives no rose-tinted love from me. I was an N64 kid growing up, and I came into the PS1 realm very late, maybe a year before the launch of the PS2. Only a small handful of titles draw out any nostalgia from me, but the rest are completely new experiences.
So far, from what I've learned, I would have been much happier as a Playstation kid, as all the multiplatform titles run about a thousand times better than their N64 versions. On top of that, they usually control better.
I'm going to shut up now, but I'd like for this thread to be another one of those "What are the best games for x system". I've already got quite a list going, but please share your superior taste with me so that I may see the console through your eyes!

my favorite system

Get out of my head, Charles!!
Heh, I've been doing the same thing. Picked up ePSXe and then used MagicISO to dump digital copies of my PS1 games to my PC. Then used my wired Xbox360 controller to play some old favorites and others that I never really gave a chance to before. I've done a few write-ups on some of the games I've played so far.

Omega Boost is awesome and cheap.
Internal Section is worth picking up if you can play imports.

anyone know how to use a PS3 controller for some sweet sweet emulator action? No way I am using the 360 D Pad.

Just use Himuro's link or get an adapter from Radioshack for your PS2 controller.

What OS?
W7 is harder but it works. Vista is pretty easy to get it working.

If that works, dl the vibration thing to get rumble working:

As much as I loved Nintendo and the N64 and as much as I hated Sony and wanted them to fail utterly, even I had to admit that the PS1 had a lot of really awesome games. Most of what I played back then was RPGs though, like Star Ocean 2, Legend of Mana, Final Fantasy series, Valkyrie Profile, Xenogears, Arc the Lad trilogy, Lunar Silver Star Story, Chrono Cross, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, SaGa Frontier, Shadow Madness, and a few others. I never really beat any of them, but I just loved playing them anyway. I'm not sure if I changed or if it was just genre exhaustion or if the genre's gone downhill, but I haven't felt the same way about JRPGs since then.
Oh, Incredible Crisis was an awesome game too.

Seriously you're the first people I've met besides myself who have actually played that game. Incredible Crisis is incredible :teehee

I got it at Fred Meyer for $5 back in 2001. They had about 20 copies on clearance.
-
Get:
- Swagman
- One
- Overblood
- MediEvil 1 & 2
- SyphonFilter 1 2 3
- Guardian's Crusade
-
OverBlood...I picked it up a couple of years ago on a whim, knowing nothing about it, and was pleasantly surprised. The controls are really janky, the graphics are sparse, the dialog and voice acting is hilariously bad, but it's somehow a fun adventure/survival-horror game. Definitely give it a try.
-
The Ghost in the Shell game is surprisingly competent.
-
Just got Tactics Ogre from ebay... woohoo!

Eh, they recently released translated SNES version, I'd save my money on this one

Good console but the Nintendo DS is an instant classic next to it.
:rofl
Demi, what do you think of Incredible Crisis? It's like QTE: The Game, I'm assuming you'd love it.

I also hate mini-games

SotN or gtfo.
I've beaten it like five times.
-
I have Incredible Crisis but never bothered getting past the second or third stage. Just seemed so lame and boring and "wacky" just for the sake of it.
Tomba! FTW, though.

Downloaded a playstation magazine demodisc yesterday with the best of Net Yaroze games on it. ROCKS AND GEMS! Still boot up the emulator often, and I've still got a whole bunch of PS1 games I want to play.

I played some Guardian's Crusade today. It's another one of those PS1 RPGs that I recall playing a long time ago, but had completely forgotten about until recently. It's made by Tamsoft, known for Battle Arena Toshindin and a metric ton of Simple 5000 Series games. Anyway, the game is basically an RPG-lite. Everything is very simple and straightforward from the layout of the world, to the combat, to the graphics, to the story and characters. Everything is very "child-friendly", you might say.
On the other hand, it's surprisingly addictive. I played it for about an hour and a half today and found it to be kind of fun. There's was a sudden, random surge in difficulty after I left the fourth town, which mainly the result of a certain enemy that occurs frequently in that area and which has a really, really cheap attack [health drain] that it uses all the time.
-
As much as I loved my Playstation back in the day, I find it incredibly hard to go back and replay a lot of the games I was so obssesed with. The PS1 stuff just hasn't aged very well at all, imo. FF9 is probably the only PS1 game that I'm still able to play every now and then.
That being said, I have some great memories of a lot of games from that era -
Carnage Heart
Kings Field
Broken Helix
Final Fantasy Tactics
Einhänder
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil 1&2
Ridge Racer
Bushido Blade
Colony Wars
G-Police
Sentient

I think the only game I dumped more time into was

I remember going into an Electronics Boutique to grab some stuff from a clearance bin (I think I walked out with Clocktower 3 and Koudelka for around $12 or something) and the guy behind the counter gave me a copy of the VS OST for free. I didn't even think much of it until I actually listened to it a few days later and then nonchalantly strolled back into the place and spared no expense on that fucking game.
-
Best console after Ps2 and SNES.
And I'm glad Ps1 exist otherwise I'd still be an nfag.
-
Vagrant Story is one of the last few classics I'm yet to try on PS1. Think I'll download it and see what the fuss was about.
I spent inordinate amounts of time also playing THPS2, I liked Thrashers Skate and Destroy too :D
It's funny you posted Overboard and Skullmonkeys Magus, I was trying to remember the names for both of those games. I wonder if Overboard is as fun as I remember it being.
-
In looking through PS1's catalog, I've come across a lot of IGN and Gamespot reviews from 1996-1997. It's funny because a lot of them are only three or four short paragaphs that barely say anything at all about the game. :lol

Aside from the Genesis, PS1 is the most overrated system ever. I hated that piece of crap. Long load times, single digit framerates, terrible image quality, etc. Too bad idiot consumers were too easily fooled by the nice "graphics" of FMV. I never bothered with PS1 games even when I got a PS2.

Yeah, what a loser.
-
Japan produced some vile shit during the PS1 era, I agree. I mostly used PS1 for Wipeout, sports games and random racing games (re-volt and Crash Team Racing :heart)
-
PS1 also created the worst fanboys ever, i.e. Turd so fuck that POS.
-
I remember playing MGS at my friends place (he may have bought it, or me, I forget) and beating the thing in one night. Loved the shit out of it and I think its the reason why I have a New Game+ fetish.

Ps1 also created the Xbox brand.
MS would've never entered the console market if it weren't for Sony's success with the original PS and Ps2.

If not for Nintendo dumping the SNES CD-addon Sony never would've entered the console market on their own. :smug

This is why I didn't understand the PS1 love back in the day. Load times were seriously the worst thing I ever encountered in gaming back then. Having to wait 5-10 seconds or longer whenever I entered a different room made me wanna smash my friend's PS1 against the wall when he lent it to me with Legacy of Kain.

I played the one on Gamecube (not sure what # it was) where you're skating around the airport. Seemed pretty boring, then again I'm not into skating.

That's 3. Not the best in the series. If you aren't into skateboarding that's fine, I thought you were saying Tony Hawk games were BAD. If you don't like them, whatever, but they aren't bad games by any means (except Ride). They're actually the exact opposite.
-
what do you mean "except ride" - theres plenty of prior ones that are turds lol

Proving Grounds and American Wasteland, yeah. The rest are good, imo.

Still my favorite Sony system. I know the PS2 has a lot of fans, but the PS1 was just full of more memorable games--SoTN, Metal Gear Solid, Jumping Flash 2, Twisted Metal, Resident Evil 1 and 2, Ridge Racer 4, Tekken 2 and 3, Ace Combat 2, Klonoa, Crash 1,2,3, Bust a Groove, Square at its peak, etc.
