Title: Using an oven/stove rather than a microwave really makes me feel so much better
Post by: Himu on May 16, 2010, 01:16:40 PM
Seriously. Before, I'd use the oven only to cook my food, not warm it up. But ever since the microwave went kablooey I've been using the stove and the oven to warm up leftover food I made and I'm getting great results. In the past, the reason I didn't use them is because they take so long. If I'm hungry I wanna eat now, not wait 10 minutes for the oven to heat up and another 10 minutes to warm up the food. But I've found that wait is worth it recently. I'm not sure what I'll be using a microwave for in the near future because you can count me amongst the over folks.

You're not suppose to eat when you're hungry because you eat more.

Same here. Also there should be a special place in hell for people who microwave their frozen wings instead of broil them.

Sounds like a good way to starve to death.

I don't know why people with ample time choose the microwave for warming up food.

I put my leftover pulled pork in a pot and warm it up on the stove.  Add some fresh sauce and it's like brand new.

Put chicken/fries/fried shrimp etc in the oven for 10 min.  Almost as good as new.

Soup/chili etc goes in a pot on the stove.  Mac and cheese goes in a pot on the stove with some added milk.  Brand new.

In total it takes like 8 more minutes to heat things properly, and they taste so much better.

Toaster oven works great for reheating stuff.

Toaster oven? *googles*

...

Wtf. Mind blown.

Yeah, instead of using the big oven to just reheat something, use a toaster oven. Much smaller, heats up a lot quicker and doesn't use as much energy.

what about radiation

this is one of the main reasons I'm moving from microwave to oven

A toaster oven is not a microwave. It doesn't use radiation.

Our full-size oven is convection, it's incredible.

Don't do it for that reason.  A conventional oven also heats up your food with "radiation" but neither of them are able to mutate your dna or whatever.  There's no cancer risk with it.

Ditto.

It's funny because in professional kitchens microwaves are amazing unitaskers.  Pastry chefs love them for melting chocolate.  In a crowded kitchen, not have to set up a double boiler to melt chocolate is a huge time and space saver.

This thread is selling the convenience of microwave short.  Things like being able to microwave your food in the same plate you'll eat it in, boil a single cup of water without messing up a pot, melting chocolate instead of breaking out a double boiler (mentioned above), warming up hot pockets in less time, etc.  For lazy people, it is the quickest way to get food ready with the least amount of clean up.

that said, microwaves :piss2

btw, I had no idea they made convection toaster ovens.

I thought eating lots of microwaved food results in bladder/stomach cancer?

no, there's no reason to think that could happen.

health-wise, cooking food in general can deactivate some vitamins and I think microwaving specifically does that with water-soluble vitamins like vitamin B.  But it usually uses less overall energy than other heat sources so you have to really research individual foods and their nutrients to see what it's better for if you're REALLY concerned about vitamin deficiencies.

Microwave :piss2

I used to only use it for popcorn, now I don't even do that (I pop it on the stove instead).

I'm not saying it's a big deal. I'm just sayin', that's what I read in news reports.

I wasn't duped by anything. To be duped, you have to be tricked. It's hard to be tricked when you were born in to religion to begin with. btw you wanna meet my 12 year old cousin?

I cook with the stove/oven. I rarely "cook" with the microwave, I just used it to warm my food in the past.
