Hard Corps: Uprising stars Colonel Bahamut, who, interestingly enough, was a bad guy in Contra: Hard Corps. For some reason or another he seems to have had a change of heart and is now battling against the aliens he was previously working with. He can be joined by a pal so that players can play cooperatively, both online and off. Unlike the Genesis Hard Corps, where we had four characters to choose from, here we just have two -- although Konami is looking into making additional downloadable characters available.

Hard Corps was one of the best games for the Genesis, but this revision doesn't really seem to have anything to do with it. The original game was very dark, and why even bother using Bahamut? Didn't he die in some of the endings anyway?
Oh well, I'll keep my eye on it.

not saying that this looks bad (on the contrary)
but why does konami need to do this with arc system? did they fire the single guy who drew all of the castlevania sprite 10 years ago?
-
:bow Arc Sys :bow2
-
hahahahahahaha
-
yep, that looks like a contra game by arcsys alright.
-
Looks AMAZING!

Looks pretty great, hope it's good. The original Hard Corps was fucking awesome.

Better looking floor video. This one includes a look a one of the bosses and a motorcycle sequence.
-
All of the gameplay vids make this look like the easiest side-scrolling shooter ever. Hopefully it's just set to VERY EASY for demoing purposes.

[ARCADE MODE] Clear all missions without dying
:rock
There's also one for having 20 extra lives in Arcade mode. So I guess this game will be an easy 1cc.

They're were probly demoing 'Rising' mode, which is supposed to be for casuals. By all estimations, 'Arcade' mode is supposed to be hard as shit.
-
this is out 2nite I believe.
Anyone getting it? I may not get it day 1, but I will pick it up in a week or two
-
Day one... or whenever the PSN version gets released.
-
I'm getting it fo sho. Looks fantastic, even though the scoring system is apparently broken. I don't really give a shit about scoring in sidescrolling shooters anyway.
Might be up at 5am when this drops and download it ASAP. Amazing week for games :rock

This really needs to be on Steam.

Just downloaded this. Awesome anime opening with Ishiwatari's music blaring in the background. Game's awesome already :bow

This game is pretty fun so far. I've only played the first two stage (out of 8 ) and everything has been great. The first stage is a little easy, but the second is decently challenging, and the bosses are no pushovers either. One of my friends told me the netcode is great as well, which isn't much of a surprise since ASW are gods at online play.
I think I'll play through Rising mode first and get used to the game before I try to tackle Arcade mode.
-
Woah, this is really good. Contra + Guilty Gear dashing is a good mix. The demo sold me!
-
I only played the demo but I thought it was a really bad use of the Hard Corps name. The game seems really easy and boring to play through, there's no real tension in the fights and it seems to move too slow. Hard Corps was all about fighting from setpiece to setpiece while taking out crazy bosses and constantly moving around and killing things, with death all but assured unless you were skilled. Hell, I beat the Genesis version and got all the endings legit back in the day. Sure, 90% of my runs ended up in failure but the game was so fast-paced and a joy to play that I never minded starting over again. There's hardly any of that here in the new game and I don't really see any relation whatsoever that required them to bring the name back. I guess you can choose from four characters, that's a similar trait.
-
I never played the Original Hard Corps, but this seems like a solid new Contra game. I dunno, I'm not a veteran of the series by any means.
-
You definitely should play the original if you haven't, it's a bloody amazing game. Back in the day, whenever someone asked me what my favorite game was, the answer was "Hard Corps" for a very long time and I'd still probably put it in my top 10 best games ever or whatever. It does almost everything right. Tons of variety in character and weapon choices, awesome levels that keep the action constantly moving, intense boss fights, great music, branching paths that lead to something like 6 different endings (the different paths completely change the storyline and have you fight through totally different levels, none of this "different ending picture and maybe a unique final boss" that you might expect), and everything else that's missing from games today. I can't say enough good things about the game. The difficulty level is brutal but if you're a real gamer then you can persevere through it! I guess you can be a total wuss and savestate your way through the game which would take away from the game's intensity and have me shake my head at the state of gamers today, but I'm sure you'll find the ride thrilling regardless.

sold. My man "Jacko" pimped it for a long time then flaked on gaming in general. He did help me beat Splosion Man in co-op but.
Need to suss out a good Mega Drive (Genesis) emulator for Windows 7. Recommendations?

Uprising is not easy at all. The second stage ramps up significantly compared to the first one, and on top of that, if you get hit, you lose the weapon you're currently using. And it's a VERY long game compared to everything else in the series so 1CC will take some time (in arcade mode).
Even people at shmups are bitching about it being too hard.
at the very least, this game is better than the original Contra and Contra 4.
-
The Giant Bomb quicklook :rofl
I laughed out LOUD when they both failed the jump to the copter in order to beat the stage. Their complaints can be summed up as "I am terrible at video games."
I do think the game is a little too long though. It'll take well over an hour to beat, and that's pretty crazy considering how hard the game is.

Hmmm...it's better than Contra 4? that gets me hyped. I thought 4 was pretty good for a Contra game. Not as good as SS, but maybe as good as Neo Contra which rocked.
-
I didn't really like Contra 4, so yeah. I've never played Neo Contra or Shatter Soldier either.
I really like this game, but I do have a couple problems with it. For one, it's WAY TOO LONG. I mean this game will take at least an hour and a half to clear, which is pretty crazy. I can just imagine how pissed I'd be getting game over'd on the true last boss when playing arcade mode. But thankfully you can practice everything in Rising mode, so there's no real reason to play Arcade until you are confident you can clear the game.
And secondly, there are some control issues. The main problem is how "sticky" the grabbing is. Like sometimes you'll be trying to jump over a pillar before you get pushed off the side of the screen and lose a life, but you'll keep grabbing onto the side of it over and over before finally making it over the top. And the other control issue that kinda bugs me is that it seems like animation gets in the way when you're trying to turn around quickly and go prone. It doesn't seem instant like in previous games. But maybe that's just my fault.
But other than that, it's great. Challenging, excellent presentation, lots of variety, good boss fights (for the most part), lots of power ups to unlock, etc. Well worth the $15.
-

What?
Get on that! SS especially is the best Contra since Contra 3. I played Neo recently and it was still pretty awesome, not quite as good but still worth a play.
I thought Contra 4 had good trial & error level designs (which is basically what contra is) with good bosses and some nice throwback nostalgia. Good visuals too. Only negative to me was the screen gap made it a little tougher than it should have been.

For some reason, I was thinking that those were the two PS1 Contras. Turns out, the PS1 Contras were Contra: Legacy of War and C Contra, which were both inconceivably awful.
-
I'll give Shattered Soldier a shot after I've had my fill of Uprising.
Just beat Rising mode with Krystal - kinda surprised that the anime scenes in this game are really well done. They're much nices than some full retail games, like BlazBlue or Persona. And I guess each character has their own ending too, which is pretty cool. Great game though; I guess I'll play it with Bahamut next, and then I'll buy the Sayuri DLC afterward. Or maybe I'll just keep playing with Krystal and unlock the rest of her power ups.
And lol at the credits. "2010 Konami." Shows how clogged the XBLA releases are, since this game has been done for a while.
-
Contra 4 is a good game and a hell of a lot better than this! Maybe Uprising game gets better after the first stage, but the demo just gave me such a poor impression that I have no desire to find out. Might pick it up during a sale.
-
I'm not sure where the demo ends since I just bought the game immediately, but stage 1 is pretty tame. And it's my least favorite stage in the game since the quicksand is annoying.
This game kinda reminds me of R-Type or something. I mean, if you are running around with fully powered-up weapons like the lvl 3 spread shot (which cover 90 degrees) and a lvl 3 machine gun, you tear everything apart like nothing. But if you get hit once, you lose the weapon you're currently holding and you're stuck with the default gun, which makes the game a lot harder. But whatever, it's still the best run and gun game I've played in a while. Much better than Metal Slug XX anyway.
-
This game is excellent. I've already played for 15 hours and I'm not even close to being done with this. The achievements are nice and challenging, it's packed with tons of content, the presentation is amazing for a $15 downloadable game (Studio 4C did the anime sequences - no wonder they're so good), the music is fucking awesome, the online play is rock solid. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite games on XBLA.
I really want to buy both DLC characters just to have even more variety, but I almost never buy DLC that doesn't come with achievements. Meh, they should have just charged 1600 points for this instead of trying to break 400 points off of it to avoid scaring people away.
-
yep, played a few games with quietID on the couch last night, game fucking rules. Will buy
Although my xbox has been shitting the bed again, been trying to play BC Rearmed 2 and game keeps on freezing :( I think it might be becuase the game is running off USB or something.
I would lick someone's ass for a brand spanking new 360
-
BC Rearmed 2 froze on me a few times as well. I think the game is just glitchy shit. It was pissing me off too since it kept freezing in the exact same spot at the end of a long spiked hallway you have to swing through in order to get a power up.
But anyway, I've been playing more of this. I've made it up to stage 6 without a death so far on my best run, but I fucked up and lost my weapons. I know I can do stages 7 and 8 without a death, so I'm sure I can get the achievement for beating arcade mode without dying. Just need to play perfectly for an hour and a half straight. :dizzy
I think this is my favorite game of the year so far. Even more so than MvC3 and Dead Space 2. Amazing game, easily one of the best on XBLA.
-
yeah the freezing is really prevalent for me, happened 3 times last night. It sucks cos I just wanna 200 it and get it out of the way. I might just take the plunge and buy Hard Corps. Me and quietID were struggling on stage one :lol game is brutal but I should get at least halfway decent with some practice

42 hours and 71,000 kills later, I'm finally done. One of the hardest & most satisfying games I've ever completed, right up there with DoA4, SF4, and NG2. Overall, I'd say this is one of, if not the best game on XBLA, and on top of that, it's my favorite run and gun shooter since Metal Slug 3. It's not a game for everyone though -- the high difficulty will probably turn a lot of people off, but obviously I'm someone who likes challenging games, so this was right up my alley. I loved almost every minute of it (the "grind Rising mode" achievement was a little boring).
I need to play the PS2 Contras soon, but I need a break from these games for a while. Still, this is my favorite Contra game. Or at least, it's tied with Contra 3.
-
Damn, 42 hours. I'm pretty sure you got your $10 out of that game!
-
only the japanese would put grinding in a shooter game. DOWN WITH JAPANESE DESIGN
-
This game is hard, but amazing. If there was only arcade mode and no rising mode though, I'd be pissed off.
-

Rising mode is kinda RPGish. Meaning, your score gets converted to money, and with that money you can buy a whole bunch of upgrades for your character (which only apply to Rising mode). There's an achievement for maxing out both starting characters, Bahamut and Krystal. It's easy since the scoring system is abusable and you can get 300 million points in 30 minutes (which is way more than what's necessary to max someone out from scratch), but since you just sit there killing infinite spawning robots, it's pretty boring.
Damn, 42 hours. I'm pretty sure you got your $10 out of that game!
$17.50 actually! $15 base game and $2.50 Sayuri DLC. Though that is still a great price, since this game could EASILY pass off as a PSP game since it has tons of content and high production values. And the online play is solid.
-
Eh, I guess I'll get it when it goes on sale.
-
I finally tried the demo and bought the game. What is up with the 30 second stage load times? Also bought Sayuri since playing with her reminds me of Strider. Seems like a fun title.
-
This game is on sale so I bought it. It's definitely a much better deal for 600 points. Game does get better after the first stage but still has too many flaws and I don't understand how damage is decided. I also keep pressing the wrong buttons on the controller which causes worthless deaths. Oh well, somewhat satisfying to just dash nonstop throughout the level.
-
If you get hit while dashing, you lose 2 bars of health. Otherwise it's just 1 bar no matter what you get hit by IIRC.
And one protip for you: The laser and machinegun are super powerful - try to protect them at all cost. If you do get hit, most of the stages aren't hard to get through with the basic peashooter, but the laser and machinegun make each boss 10x easier.
-
Yeah, I noticed that. The boss fights are a real drag if you lose a good weapon, and some of the boss fights take too damn long as it is. First thing I unlocked in rising mode is the autofire, makes the game a lot more bearable but you can't use it in arcade mode.
