Title: USC :lol

Quote
The NCAA has handed down its punishment for the University of Southern California.

According to a release from the NCAA, USC's football, men's basketball and women's tennis teams were found guilty of infractions.

The penalties for the infractions include four years of probation, a two-year football postseason ban, a one-year basketball postseason ban and vacation of regular and postseason wins for all three involved sports, the report says.

For the football team, the vacated wins span from December 2004 to the end of the 2005 season. USC went 13-0 in 2004 and won the BCS championship game in January 2005. USC went 12-1 in 2005, with their only loss coming in the BCS championship game.

The basketball postseason ban was fulfilled this past season.

USC will also incur scholarship reductions for football and basketball and recruiting restrictions for men's basketball.

Other penalties include a $5,000 fine and forfeiture of revenue from the 2008 men's NCAA tournament.

After conducting its investigation, the NCAA concluded that USC showed "a lack of institutional control, impermissible inducements, extra benefits, exceeding coach staff limits, and unethical conduct by an assistant football coach."

The public report stated that "the general campus environment surrounding the violations troubled the committee."

According to the release, from October 2004 to November 2005 a former USC football student-athlete, believed to be Reggie Bush, his mother and his stepfather agreed to form a sports agency with two additional partners. After the agency was formed, the former football student-athlete and members of his family asked for financial and other assistance from the partners.

Over the course of the relationship, the partners gave the former football student-athlete and his family several thousand dollars, a car, provided housing, air travel, hotel lodging, a washer and dryer and transportation.

The benefits rendered the football student-athlete ineligible, starting from at least December 2004 to the end of the 2005 football season, including postseason competition and the 2005 Orange Bowl game.

The case also includes additional benefits for a former USC men's basketball student-athlete, believed to be O.J. Mayo, his brother, his girlfriend and his girlfriend's mother. According to the report, from August 2006 to May 2008, an associate of a sports agency provided cash, lodging, air travel, transportation, meals, a television, a cell phone with wireless service, professional personal trainers, watches, shoes and other benefits.

In addition, the report says that from November 2006 to March 2009, a former women's tennis student-athlete used an athletic department long-distance access code to make over 100 unauthorized international phone calls to family members, totaling more than $7,000.

The committee investigating the case noted that many key individuals refused to fully cooperate with the investigation, including the former football and basketball student-athletes.

According to the report, the committee seriously considered imposing a television ban, but ultimately decided against it.

idk, I just like seeing my buddies from USC squirm :lol

To be fair, I don't see why the teams themselves had to be sanctioned.

If USC got caught breaking the rules, they can deal with it.

The University of Washington got caught and had sanctions placed on them in the early 90s, I'm glad USC is finally getting hit with sanctions. :rock

Yeah, it's great schadenfreude.

If UW got caught, then USC sure as hell deserved getting caught.

NCAA is a joke.  I wish they would stop pretending to be anything more than a free minor league for the NFL.

I thought it was pretty obvious that Pete Carroll left to the NFL because the shit was hitting the fan. Why else would you want to go to the Seahawks?

Well, that's about it for USC for the next decade or so.

Amen.

It's a matter of character.

Coulda been worse.  They could have been making millions of dollars off of unpaid labor while colluding with a monopoly and its union to prevent its workers from going elsewhere.  O wait.

Pretty much. The sanctions back in the 90's crippled the National Champion University of Washington Huskies who are still recovering.

If this is going to turn into an NCAA versus Pro argument:

IS THERE ANYTHING MORE ENTERTAINING THAN THE CONFERENCE SHIT GOING ON RIGHT NOW?

FUCK NO.

At least I can stand watching the NFL. The NBA is such a fucking BORING BORING BORING BORING BORING league. Long fucking live March Madness. Hell, I am still more interested in NCAA football too even with the BCS bullshit.

There is NOTHING more entertaining than me watching old people tear their hair out about where a football team is playing next year.

No, I specifically resisted the urge to point out that college sports are for sexual deviants and other undesirable elements of society.

Just saying that moralizing like Zero Hero is about money exchanging hands is silly.  The whole system is set up to make money, and fans would do well to stop pretending otherwise and just :patel

My main gripe is that they can take away the wins, but they can't take away the losses from the teams USC beat over that time.

I don't know, coming off of 8-4, and having Kiffykins as their Coach...

I don't see a #1 in their future.

Everyone knows the NCAA isn't full of saints. Programs get away with lots of bullshit, with a couple programs getting slapped every now and then when it becomes impossible to defend them (Michigan, USC), or when there's a grudge (practice scandal at Michigan last year).

I just want to see coaches get penalized for jumping from program to program. If players have to wait a year after transferring, coaches should have some regulation on their movement as well.
