Don't like it, don't buy it.

It's a fucking game system. You play video games on it.

And Kinect is Natal's final name :lol

Design's alright. It's not as bad as the original Xbox's, so there's a plus.

The design is absolutely terrible, it looks like something that belongs in the Ps2 era.

That's why I still have my doubts, Microsoft wouldn't design such a horrible looking device especially after the excellent Zune redesign.

Design's alright. It's not as bad as the original Xbox's, so there's a plus.

Well, I'm predicting major bombing from this whole MS thing they got in the cards.

The redesign doesn't do anything to improve the image and it doesn't even look Slim, the new Natal name is borderline distinguished mentally-challenged and won't fly with casual consumer at all.

Man MS sucks so hard.

And Kinect? Really?

I think time has proven that there's no name for a product that doesn't sound distinguished mentally-challenged.  Playstation, Xbox, move, wii, ipod, natal, anything...it all sounds kinda distinguished mentally-challenged.  Nintendo Entertainment System is so sterile that it works, though.  and at the time, that sounded high tech.

but I gotta stop before it looks like I'm defending natal.  This neogaf tendency to link EVERYTHING to something is just annoying.  "OMG there's a spelling mistake on p.8 in the instruction manual for Wrecking Crew for the NES that has the word 'Kinect' thus MS stole it from Nintendo lawlllllll!!!!"

especially when you don't even need to reach that far to find the forgery--lest we all forget this is all rooted in Sony and MS actually believing that motion controls are the future :(

Why not call it Wave?

Wave sounds organic, Kinect sounds like....well it sounds like shit only a level 100 nerd would think sounds cool (I'm a level 50 nerd btw).

Wii, Move, Kinect. Ugh...I'm sure the tech is impressive but that's a horrible name for the product.

Kinect is official:

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2010-06-14-vidgame14_ST_N.htm

Games, including such gems as Kinectimals, were also announced:
Quote
•Kinectimals lets you train and play with 20 different virtual cats, including a lion, cheetah and tiger.

•Joyride, a racing game, lets players use their hands to hold an imaginary steering wheel — pull your hands toward you and push back out for an acceleration boost — and their bodies to execute jumps and tricks.

•Kinect Sports has six activities including boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, track and field, soccer and table tennis. To serve a volleyball, you mimic the real motion; in soccer, you can kick the ball or do a header.

•Kinect Adventures includes a river-raft time trial and obstacle course, playable by up to four players. On the raft, playing as a duo, you and a partner must lean one way or another to steer. Jumping helps the raft reach special areas for extra points.

•Dance Central, in development by MTV Games, brings a So You Think You Can Dance experience home.

•Star Wars characters and iconic Disney favorites will be featured in separate new games being developed at Microsoft in conjunction with LucasArts and Disney.

Knowing Microsoft, Kinect is going to be marketed as just a subset of different genres that encourage a casual but still "kinnected" experience.  Remember, the Wii's name didn't stop its momentum.  If somebody's going to invest in motion-control just for the sake of the gimmick then they're not going to care about the name.

And I actually like the slim's design.  It looks subtle.

Actually, this is the most coherent thing he's posted in a year. MTV Games/Viacom can go wherever they want for titles, and I hear Viacom has some money. Yeah, HMX is the biggest one we've heard from so far, yeah Demiurge and Backbone have been lapping at the teat of HMX's assets and pipeline for Unplugged and Green Day, but it doesn't mean that it's going to be all Rock Band, all the time.

Kinect is official:

•Star Wars characters and iconic Disney favorites will be featured in separate new games being developed at Microsoft in conjunction with LucasArts and Disney.
So, wait, Joy Ride went from being a free-to-play online, cooperative race game to a hand-waving spaz festival?

wave is still cheesy though it does feel a bit closer to the core of the functionality of natal (using your hands to do shit.)  Maybe i'm poisoned at the root knowing that all of this shit is decided on with 1000s of focus groups and millions in research about what's "cool."  the corporate process for coming up with the name for something naturally arrives at something that feels patronizing.   So anything they choose is like pre-ruined for me. :lol

Is that really the 360 redesign? it looks like a one of those mini Dell towers.  It seems to have a lot of air vents, so good on them for trying to avoid the heat problem the second time around.  Including wi-fi is nice too.

But this is a redesign of a console.  I have no reason to buy this like I didn't have one to buy the slim PS3.

The slim PS2 came at a perfect time; my PS2's disc tray was about to die right when they launched it.

if tretton announced a final price drop for the ps2 to somewhere around $59.99-$69.99 in a special "last production run" color, that would be a nice sendoff for one of the greatest consoles ever made

i'd buy one for the bedroom tv

But will it overheat?! that's my issue. Like, that's the sole reason why I've held off buying one.*

After looking at some high res pics of the redesign, I gotta say that I kind of like the look of it now.  Not that I necessarily give a damn about that kind of stuff and I don't ever really see my PS3 or 360 since they're behind a cabinet door, but the 360 250GB isn't as bad as I first thought.

If they're as quiet as reported, I might pick one up for the bedroom just for the Netflix thing.

I have an 8GB Toshiba flash stick. Will that be okay? It's just gonna be game saves and arcade stuff.
Should be fine; the USB "compatibility" stuff is really only for DLC/game installs, IIRC.

That's correct, it'll just divide the stick into a 16GB portion for the X360 stuff and leave the rest free for your other crap.

Mine looked just like that prior to manifesting the E74 error. The official policy is to treat it the same as a RRoD, so you should investigate getting it fixed for free prior to paying for something new:
Quote
Microsoft covers repairs for the E74 error for a period of three (3) years from the original purchase date of the console. If you are outside the initial three-year warranty period, you can still receive console repair service from Microsoft for a fee for the E74 error. For more information about this repair process, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: (http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/kb.aspx?id=941377&lcid=1033&category=hardware)

Nothing like plopping down $60 bucks just to get home and have the game ruined because your console destroyed it.  You'd think this would be something the Microsoft would take care in their new version of the console since it seems they've taken care of many of the other issues the console had. Think again. Our intrepid E3 team tested the console out with an Alan Wake disc and then Nick decided to move it. Suddenly all hell breaks loose. Goodbye, Alan Wake.

My cable modem and router are at my television anyway, so wifi has never been an issue with me, either. The increased disk space is nice (I have 60GB), but I don't play (let alone swap) different games frequently enough where simply uninstalling one to clear space for another is too burdensome.

Yeah, the childlike "New Hardware!" part of my brain is pushing me pretty hard right now, despite not needing this revision at all. The added wifi does me no good anyways.

Do you have HDMI on your 360?  That's going to be my excuse. :-[

Yeah, I do. I truly have no excuse. That said, common sense will surely prevail for a little while at least.

Sadly, the integrated wireless would do me no good since its N and I still have an old G router. Might need to get a new N router to take advantage of that.

It's a color we know so well, but it looks like Microsoft would like to dissociate itself from its RROD heritage, or perhaps just ran out of red LEDs: the new Xbox 360 only has a green ring around its power button, so even if you wrap the thing in a blanket and set it on fire, it won't be flashing red to tell you how it feels. This was unearthed in a spec sheet that Joystiq  received from a tipster, along with all the other fancy specs you can see above. Overall the console is 17% smaller, which really goes to show that Microsoft was much more interested in noise and heat reduction than sliding the new 360 into a smaller crevice of your home entertainment center.

RROD no more...sorry stards,no job for your gif factory

this is the best part of the new Xbox:

pure black accessories (except face buttons).  Black analog sticks, black d-pad, black bottom area.  The elite controller only had the top of the shell black.  Most of the other accessories are becoming pure black too.

1) Does the current Xbox have issues? No? Step 2.
2) Does the new Xbox do anything better? No? Step 3.
3) Do I need the extra storage? No? Step 4.
4) Do I like black better than white? If I said yes, would that also mean it is OK to like white better than black? That could be deemed insensitive and possibly racist. Step 5.
5) Does the new Xbox solve world hunger? No? Step 6.
6) Does the new Xbox stop the oil spill? No? Step 7.
7) Is Ed "Too Tall" Jones too tall? Yes? Step 8.
8 ) Buy new Xbox.

Mucky, mah bruddah. That new electronics smell is what modern man uses to replace the thrill of the hunt, or traveling to neighboring villages and stealing their wimmen. Buying a new slimline 360 is a surrogate for fulfilling those primal urges. So if you don't have a neighboring village with lax laws about kidnapping, you'll need to buy the new box.

I'm so on the fence about this. Here's what I've got:
refurbed 360; unsure about which rev
/g/b wifi adapter
120GB HDD

Here is exactly what would improve: HDMI, /n instead of /g wifi, 130GB more storage, and it'd be quiet.

Probably slightly lower power usage, but no-one's giving "eco" discounts for game hardware, only fridges, ovens, and air conditioners. :(

I could drop 150USD on an Arcade unit to get the HDMI, or 300USD to get the "whole package" but neither option is a substantial improvement over my already well-accessorized 360.
Title: Re: Microsoft's slim Xbox
Post by: chronovore on June 17, 2010, 09:57:17 PM
As MS transitions to a download/online-centered business model, lack of local storage becomes a real impediment to their plans. I wonder what they'll do as well; I suspect something will have to be offered at the 200USD pricepoint to fill the gap left by Arcade and to stay competitive with Wii.

...I feel dirty for even suggesting that the 360 needs to compete with Wii, but then again there's a whole division of Kinect engineers and MS marketers who should feel a lot more dirty than I do.

I think I'll wait for the inevitable slimline/Kinect bundle.
Title: Re: Microsoft's slim Xbox
Post by: Bocsius on June 17, 2010, 10:00:54 PM
The whole point of the Arcade in the first place was that they wouldn't be married to a hard drive so that they could achieve mass market penetration at a lower price point. The side effect is that developers had to not rely on the hard drive being there, particularly as we got deeper into the generation as the late adopters would be more apt to grab the Arcade. To abandon that philosophy now would basically mean they sabotaged their own efforts unnecessarily, as developers would still not be able to count on the hard drive and they wouldn't have that low price entry point. I think the popularity of the Arcade has certainly increased over time, to permanently discontinue it now would be foolish.

Post by: chronovore on June 17, 2010, 10:23:07 PM
The USB support opens up A LOT of options; non-proprietary form factor lets anyone use just about any-priced item they can find. The "cap" is none to bad either, at 80% of the previous standard amount of storage.

It's also possible they figure anyone buying an Arcade unit for its low price is also unlikely to be paying 50USD a year for ancillary services.

With the gamestop deal you have 7 days to do a HDD transfer and then trade in said HDD to get the credit put towards your purchase of the new 360 Slim.

Also seems like a lot of mistakes are happening and extra credit is being given out for the consoles and hdd's.

Get one of these before you start the trade up process. You can also trade in the transfer kit for $7.50 once your done with it. The way I hear how they reimburse you is once you trade in HDD they give you back the difference you payed in cash by doing a return/re-buy.

The gamestop deal is going on till July 11th plenty of time to get that transfer cable.

I got one! My first Xbox. I also picked up Crackdown, Dead Rising, Halo 3, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead and Fable 2. I took advantage of the game sale on XBLA and bought Castle Crashers, Trials HD, Shadow Complex and Geometry Wars.

Any game suggestions? I decided to start with some older games and work my way forwards. I'll be getting Mass Effect tomorrow. I heard that installing Halo 3 is a bad idea. Is this true? Are there free TV shows like on PSN? Anything else I should check out?

Installing Halo 3 increases the load times. So correct. Don't do it with that game.  I would have picked up Geometry Wars 2 instead of 1 as its pretty much better than the original in every way.

Stoney, I misspoke, it actually was Geometry Wars 2 that I picked up, as that was the one that was on sale. I'm playing Shadow Complex right now. The game feels like its sub-HD. The dashboard looks odd too. The Xbox is outputting a 1080p signal but the dash, especially the pop-ups look oddly low res. I've yet to play any of the disc games I purchased, though I installed them all except for Halo. I love that you can download demos for every game XBLA game.

Has anyone bought any of the Games on Demand titles? Any thoughts on their pricing, performance, etc?

The games on demand work fine as far as performance. Just don't ever buy anything over $19.99 otherwise you are getting screwed. Even all of the $19.99 titles could be found cheaper in used stores but for the ease of not having to get off your ass 20 bones isn't so bad.

Mass Effect 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Gears of War 2
Hitman: Blood Money
Forza 3
Deadly Premonition
Dyack's Folly
Kameo
Perfect Dark Zero

I guess I should start playing some games.

With my Edge card, the total was $122.06, but I traded in $38.60 worth of games, plus I had $15 put down on games that I had received review copies of, so I put that towards the total as well. Out of pocket I paid $68.46.

No

I would install Halo 3 anyway. The luxury of not having to use the drive outweighs any increased load time - supposed load time, anyway

I may have went a bit overboard in my return to Gamestop today. In addition to the 6 games I bought along with the console, plus the XBLA games I purchased,  I just picked up:

Mass Effect 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Gears of War 2
Hitman: Blood Money
Forza 3
Deadly Premonition
Dyack's Folly
Kameo
Perfect Dark Zero

I guess I should start playing some games.

Used games sale?  How much total?

With my Edge card, the total was $122.06, but I traded in $38.60 worth of games, plus I had $15 put down on games that I had received review copies of, so I put that towards the total as well. Out of pocket I paid $68.46.

Edit: I know I shouldn't install Halo 3, does this apply to any of the games I bought today?

Nice pickup.  Sometimes, it does pay to wait.

Thanks.

I'm really enjoying the 360, but I knew I would. I was waiting WiFi and Valhalla, and now that the machine has that, I knew I couldn't hold off any longer. The social features are great and, as opposed as I am to paying for online play, I will be purchasing a 12 month Gold card before my free month expires. I think Amazon has a deal of a 12 month card for $38, is that a good deal or do you think I can find it cheaper within the next month?

Also, if anyone wants to play anything online, my gamertag is Shur Son.

Nice pickup.  Sometimes, it does pay to wait.

I'm actually not too proud about buying so many used games, as I mostly buy new. I did buy new copies of Left4Dead 1 , Mass Effect 1 and Crackdown. But so far, that's it aside from XBLA games, all of which (Trials HD, Shadow Complex, Splosion Man, GeoWars2, Castle Crashers) were half price this week.

I'll pick up Splinter Cell: Conviction new. I'm hoping to get a review copy of Crackdown 2, but if I don't I'll definitely pick it up.

It exists but it's not big, about 10 seconds i think, after that game works perfectly normal and without noise.

Yes, an internal hard drive and Wi-fi set this apart from the competition.

Built in wireless N (PS Triple got b/g) a 250 g drive, has reduced power consumption drastically, is smaller and by all accounts I've read so far is quieter, all important aspects which have addressed problems with previous iterations. As with any new SKU new problems may arise with it at a later date but at first impressions it's a big upgrade from previous units. So yeah, relatively this thing be packin.

So wi-fi, a bigger hard-drive, reduced power consumption, reduced noise levels, and a smaller form factor than the previous sku?

Sounds vaguely familiar.

qID, I can't believe you're even responding to such a clear case of sarcasm and empty trolling. Ask him how he likes his group voicechat, cross-game voicechat, playing his custom music while using any kind of network connection, being able to play games offline if you don't feel like updating over the course of hours, and how great it is to be able to demo any downloadable game before committing to a purchase.

That's if he was being sarcastic about the superior feature set of the PS3. If he was being sarcastic about the Wii, just ask him about his friends list.

Did they do anything to the damn thing or did they just put wireless in and drop a new plastic case on it?

all consoles have that disc scratching issue. protip: don't jostle your fucking console while playing. alternatively, install to the hd.

it doesn't overheat; at least, no more than the ps3 does. i've lost a ps3 to overheating, courtesy of a four year old daughter. protip 2: don't play your next-gen console with the damn thing sealed in a small cabinet enclosure! the new 360 will at least WARN you and shut down if it gets too hot.

For those peeps speculating about the Arcade model and bundles:
Quote
Kinect bundles and $199 360 confirmed (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/kinect-bundles-and-USD199-360-confirmed) (reg req'd for full article)

Microsoft has appeared to confirm hardware bundles with the Xbox 360 and Kinect, as well as a $199 version of the redesigned Xbox 360 console - although details remain sparse.

An internal marketing Q&A obtained by website Kotaku indicates that the newly unveiled Kinect camera system will be available as "part of a bundle with the newly designed Xbox 360 console".

Although console bundles for Kinect have been widely assumed throughout the industry, Microsoft's refusal to announce a price for the standalone Kinect system meant that no package deals have been officially confirmed.

The Kinect price is due to be revealed at the gamescom event in August, but multiple retailers are already listing it for $150.

The website of U.S. retailer GameStop has previously listed a $299 Arcade bundle with Kinect, as well as a $399 Elite version - although both these listings now appear to have been removed.

The Q&A also confirms that Microsoft will release "a $199 Xbox 360 this fall". Although this would seem likely to refer to a cheaper version of the new, slimline Xbox 360, the exactly wording of the document is ambiguous.

The only version of the redesigned Xbox 360 confirmed by Microsoft at E3 is currently listed for $299 and includes a 250GB hard drive and a built-in Wi-Fi adapter. If this is assumed to be equivalent to the current "Elite" Xbox 360 SKU, then a $199 version is likely to be equivalent to the Arcade bundle.

The current Arcade SKU does not include a hard drive and is instead bundled with a 256MB memory card. However, the redesigned Xbox 360 does not feature memory card slots and instead has two additional USB ports.

While specifications for any cheaper SKU remain purely at the speculation stage, possible candidates for feature-removal in a cheaper SKU might thus include the 250GB hard drive, or the newly-integrated wireless networking - which required a costly add-on on the older models of 360.

Notice the cooler and its fan.More importantly notice the hot air path...straight into our eyes

That means that 360 Sexy is blowing hot air from its left side...plastic casing will obviously redirect it,so it goes at a certain angle towards the back

That also means that if you block the left side, machine will overheat, unlike old 360s that have hot air coming from the back.

Microsoft's just dropped details on its new Xbox Live family subscription plan. Starting in November, it will offer the Gold Family Pack, enabling up to four users to have Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, for $99.99 a year. It'll also debut the Family Center, a new menu accessible from the dashboard for customizing account settings. We've certainly wished for something like this in the past, and the pricing sounds like a pretty good deal to us -- we'll be able to afford a new cap for our avatar, afterall! This is a bit hard for me to understand. If you have 4 people playing enough to warrant having separate accounts, don't you need 4 360s? Or at least more than one? Will you be able to have one Family subscription, spread over 2-4 360s?

If I had a family that hardcore, I wouldn't balk at the price. Like you say, it's a hefty discount.

Update: We just heard from Microsoft that you could split these four accounts across consoles, so long as they were all in the same country. To do so, first the second, third and fourth accounts need to be added to the same console as the primary account holder. After they are activated onto the Family Pack, they can recover that account onto a different console.

Problem with sharing these among friends instead of just family members is that the primary account holder is still responsible for purchases, meaning, people who add points on the other three accounts will just bill the primary account holder. Which would be great, if you weren't the guy paying for your three chumps' DLCs.

It's actually "up to four accounts," and it's not clear how they'll be limited. If it's just a four-pack of yearly codes, super. I suspect it will be implemented in a way which prevents people from using it across disparate locations and saving money by dividing the 99USD four ways. (I just read am nintenho's post.)

As for "free," I actually think that a single, logged-in Gold account should enable access for any other currently-logged-in Silver or Non-Live accounts on a single machine, limited only by any game's features and any other DRM in play. So if a game supports splitscreen multiplayer and online simultaneously, and one player is Gold but the other Silver, they should still be able to play an online match against others. However, if the Silver account initiates a download, it would still be limited by the parameters of his account.

This actually came up for me when trying to use Video Chat, where I logged in and was talking to my sister in the USA. My wife wanted to talk at the same time, so I pulled out an extra controller and headset, and turned them on. It wouldn't recognize the other controller's mic, so I logged in my wife's Silver account. The 360 ended the Video Chat without warning or explanation. It wouldn't allow me to restart the video chat until I'd logged out her account. It pissed me off.

See this is so that the whole family can play 1 vs 100 or Bomberman or whatever and not be "Cornelius 1973" followed by "Cornelius 1973(1)", "Cornelius 1973(2)", "Cornelius 1973(3)" etc

Last but not least, as we just discovered, you can simply rip open your old Xbox 360 hard drive and slot it into the case, at which point it will be immediately recognized. Needless to say, we don't recommend this route for a variety of reasons... we hear Microsoft's warranty support service doesn't take kindly to freely bouncing hard drives.

Everywhere has run out.  It seems the gamespot deal is basically void since it expires before they get their new shipments.

Considering that they want $100 for a 60gb, that isn't a bad deal and it comes with a transfer cable.

I'm enjoying mine. It's shiny, which isn't matching anything else. Hell, I bought the first matte PS3.  :-\

But the touchless power and eject buttons with sound effects are nice. BING! BONG!  :P

apparently the cheaper slim xbox is matte.  If I ever get one, I'd get that, then be stuck needing an expensive hard drive  :'(

That's funny. It's like people buying the Arcade, because it doesn't have the plastic-crappy silver tray and eject button.

My launch 360 broke down last year and picked up an arcade to replace it.  I didn't notice the drive cover was different until a few weeks ago.

In general I think shiny plastic for electronics end up looking and feeling cheaper.  Ideally everything would be brushed metal.

As a joke, I'd like an eco-xbox, done up in cardboard like those Muji speakers that are just unfolding cardboard box-mounted. Someone has probably already done the cardboard ghetto mod.

What advantage would electronics bring over a regular physical coxbox?

That makes it a bit unportable, don't like it.
