This was made completely by one dude, right? I think I remember him posting vids at GAF a few years back of early versions. It looks a lot more detailed now.

Bought it and played it for about 45 minutes. I like it. This is no deadlight.

It kinda reminds me of an easier version (at least at default difficulty) of those Dishwasher games mixed with a bit of metroid as in there are locked abilities you get later and places you can't go at first until you get abilities to go there. There also seems to be a lite crafting or material system where you can equip rings, armor, etc.

The combat is mashy but I like it and it looks good and is simple. The art and animation is absolutely gorgeous. It looks like a cartoon. Technically it's not as impressive from a pure graphics standpoint as something like Trine but the art design just about makes it as impressive as that game.

It's a bit too cutsey, and self serious with the story and some of the art but who cares. Definitely will finish it and play later today. This and Hybrid seem like the best two of this Summer of Arcade.

I didn't realize it was all done by just one guy.  Now it sort of makes sense why it took him 5 years of his life to make.

Then again, you gotta wonder if it's really worth spending upwards of 5+ years of your life on a single project that people will play for a week and then most likely never think about again.  Wouldn't it make more sense to get some fellow staffers and spend 2-3 years instead?  So you can move on to other ideas that you've surely come up with in the process?

I mean even Nomura, whose taking a bijillion years to make Versus, is still making a shit load of other games in the meantime because devoting yourself entirely to one project for so long just seems inefficient.

Aka, when I make my game, I'm gonna be in and out in under 18 months.

So is questioning the efficiency of spending 5+ years developing a single game vs. making multiple games and spreading out your portfolio is really so ridiculous?

I think at some point, people need to let it go and move on to something else.  See Team ICO.

It took Yotsubane/Clover-TAC more than 5 years to make Crimzon Clover as well, and that's the best doujin game ever. I guess if someone is set on creating their dream game, they won't release it until they're 100% satisfied.

For some people its probably not about making money/running a business.

Yeah, I've been working on my game on my own for almost 3 years now and will probably take another 2+ years for me to finish. It takes a lot of time and patience. Sure I could make a bunch a smaller throwaway games in that time, but I'd rather spend my time making something that's more polished and stands out than something quick and forgettable. Also it takes a lot of time since I'm doing all the coding, graphics, and debugging on my own while trying to squeeze that in with work, social life, and bouts of designer's block.  Plus I'm having lots of fun making my game and would love to see it to completion, so it doesn't bother me that it's taking so long.

For big mainstream games I agree with you. Because the financial imperative and money burn is much greater. For individual guys or very small teams it's a different proposition. Only they can decide individually whether they are wasting their own time or not. In some cases they absolutely are wasting their time. In others like the case of dust, I think he is probably pretty proud of what he was able to achieve. It depends from situation to situation.
