There was some video from the conference. I'll post it when somebody puts up a good version on youtube.

Hmm, graphically it looks nice and fast but the whole cat and mouse slowing down, speeding up, trying to play car tag looked kind of boring after a little.  Plus the track was just kind of long straight road.

Hope there's a lot of pure racing gameplay with good tracks like Burnout.

Criterion is so overrated.    Aside from Shift, this game is just like the 10 NFS before it.

I though the exact same thing. I remember the old hot pursuits being really fun but that demo didn't end up looking as fun as I hoped it would be or as I remembered it.

I'm wondering how that works too.  If it wasn't one on one or straight race tracks it would be awesome.  The trailer makes me think it is more about multiple people getting into it.  Certainly would be a lot more interesting if you chase the guy down while a bro goes a different direction to cut him off.

At least it seems to do the split second thing where you can call in support

this video shows it off a lot better than the EA conference video

they do mention it is open world, but because it is built around high speed, it sounds like it is more long stretches and such instead of something like Paradise where there were a bunch of roads and intersections.

Burnout 3 is one of the best, and most original arcade racers ever. Paradise took the OWG idea and applied it to everything they'd learned from that success, forward. Criterion may have made crap middleware, but they knew how to milk their own engine, and build on their successes.

According to the talk on the EA forums, it's going to be like Underground 1: set in a single area, called Seacrest County, but no free roaming, just circuits/point-to-point courses with lots of room to explore.

Anyways... HYPE GET. :hyper

EDIT: it is open world. Hopefully, it's better designed than NFS Undercover.

It's looking better, but the tracks are still looking dull compared to Burnout.  Too much straight driving in big open lanes and then big wide turns.  Driving through the city in Burnout was constantly crazy awesome with all kinds of turns, bridges, shortcuts, jumps, traffic everywhere.

I'm hoping the city portion of this game is closer to that.

Hmmmmm, PC version at glorious 60fps.

But the whole game is about on online integration and PC community won't compare to the console ones for a game like this.
Plus all DLC will probably be console exclusive like Burnout.

Hmmm....which version to get hmmmm...

will try the demo and see how 30fps feels.

I haven't tried it but don't forget the BP demo got awfullll reactions and then the game ended up being fantastic.  So maybe it'll be similar?

Just kind of hard to believe Criterion who are the masters of arcade racing made a meh racer.  I mean all the videos have looked boring driving down straight roads in an Outrun style with bumping the other cars, but I want to believe it'll be good because BP is like my favorite racing game ever.

I liked it more than the others but its such a limited demo its hard to form a really good opinion on it for me. I can't even try the online portion which is the main reason why I would play this game with the hot pursuit stuff. So dumb to not offer online multiplayer in these demos in this day and age.

YES THIS!

It reminds me of burnout 3 takedown but mixed with NFS Hot Pursuit. The game feel's dead, not just the environment but the roads. After burnout I just expect lots of cars constantly on screen at once. Another thing there is no sense of danger or urgency, the music helps but there was something about the previous Hot Pursuit games that felt better.

I'm still gonna buy this still cause I have to have something till the best racing game in the world comes out in January.... Test Drive Unlimited 2!!!

Problem 1: Frontloaded with unskippable cutscene bullshit

Being in the thick of a race, only for the AI to assrape me by setting off a barrage of power plays to put me in dead last while one AI car builds up an impossible lead.

The cheating AI is worse than Mario Kart Wii. After the tenth time it happened, I gave up midway through the season mode.

But your taste in racing games is suspect anyways, so that's okay.

ferrarimanf355 is right that Split/Second has the worst rubberband AI ever known by man.

Which is kind of funny because NFS is the exact opposite.  The AI is rubberband neck and neck with me in the racer track and then suddenly it flashes "1 mile remaining" and EVERY CAR slows down to half speed suddenly and I fly by them all and take first by a mile  :lol

I don't really get rubberbanding at all.  Make your racer with no rubberband and multiple difficulty levels and let the player choose the challenge.  If the player is amazing, let them lap all the AI, it's their reward for being that good.  If they suck, let them turn down the difficulty until they can catch up.

I never got hit by anything in Split/Second leaving folks in the dust. Sounds like scrub-talk. Mario Kart's a different story, but Split/Second gives you a lot of chances to preemptively shut down your attackers if you're leading the pack. Use them.

Yeah, I dunno.  Either the game is like the demo and sucks and reviewers are terrible as usual.

Or the demo sucks but the full game is awesome and it's another case of Criterion demos as usual.

Might be back on the hype train.  Will wait for people to get their hands on it and see what word of mouth is.  Then will pick it up on PC if everyone (including Burnout fans) love it.

Although reading that review they're like "single player mode is pretty average but OMG FACEBOOK GAMING" so since I don't care about online and play for SP, maybe not for me.

You mean burnout 1 and 2 or burnout before paradise?

Either way its more like a mix of that Hot Pursuit with burnout style drafting bonuses and a slight bit of the collision although its really a mix of both. So I would say it has burnout like elements but its clearly not a burnout game if that's purely what you want.

I read about it this morning and thought it was a great marketing scheme; every fan and owner of this game would share this on twitter and FB.

Criterion deserves a lot of credit for it's post-launch free DLC support. If this game receives a fraction of the support Paradise god, I'll be content.

Not sure. I know if you subscribe you can get better quality videos. Not sure if that is for download or stream though.

Also I was curious so I tried this out on the PC via the usual methods. Runs very well.

I haven't tried the demo but a lot of people are saying that's not a real indicator of the full game, just like how Paradise's demo failed to capture the game's feel and do it justice.

Apparently Criterion sucks at creating demos.

I tried to get a feel of the this a few times. I just dont like the vehicle control one bit. it all feels way too heavy and way to loose. it's like the exact opposite as Burnout. for all I know there could be some cool set piece races in the game but the core feeling of driving cars in the game kinda sucks.

thumbs down

Is this anything like old school Burnout?

it feels and plays nothing like any of the Burnouts. if you want a precise and responsive racing game, this isn't it.

How's the PC community look for this? Seem like it'll have some lasting power?

I was playing the PC version through nefarious means as I was just curious how it would run on my system. If I was to actually get it, I would have gotten it on 360 anyway.

Played a little of the PS3 version.  Game seems pretty cool and the PS3 community is pretty big so all the leaderboard stuff is great.  Criterion is always next-level when it comes to their online integration.

I miss the lack of loading from BP though.  Was so nice just going from event to event without sitting through load screens all the time.  Also 60fps as well.

It's sort of like Burnout.  It you had to compare it to another racer, non-paradise Burnout would be it.  Although it's still nothing like Burnout, but that's the closest comparison in how it plays.

The demo was awful, but full game seems hot.  Same thing happened with BP.

I think they just released much of the Burnout DLC for free on the PC.  It's not a big deal for me since I only dabble a little with Criterion games.  Their driving mechanics are just too arcadey for me.  I prefer pseudo-realistic handling like PGR or Dirt/Grid.  NFS:HP is the better game, imo, because at least there's no driving aimlessly around to look for races.

Definitely try to get the PC version of NFSHP if you can.  60FPS really makes a huge difference in an arcade racer.  I'm still stumped why the console versions aren't 60fps since the graphics aren't that much improved.  Also, the PC version doesn't support anti-aliasing even though Burnout PC had all kinds of different AA.   It seems like NFSHP could have used a little more time like GT5.

i would like to eat a little crow. not a lot, but a little. i have to admit that i was playing the PLAYSTATION 3 version of the game when i was posting itt. its not my fault tho since thats what gamefly sent me. I dont know if the XBOX 360 version is any better or runs any better but the PLAYSTATION 3 is unplayable.

At 30fps this game is a complete failure.
At 50-60fps this game is a fairly good success.

Not better than Burnout tho. Graphically it's really nice but I am still not 100% a fan of the weight and feel of the game, but it's far easier to play when the game is actually running well.

I didn't buy it but I will if there's a sale. 20 bucks and i'll bite for the STEAM version.

I would've bought the PC version day 1 if it was on steam.  But EA has this new stick up their butt and wants people to ditch steam for their EA online store, so they lost a full price sale there and instead I picked up the console version on the cheap.

I don't think Paradise is crap but there's a lot of tedious, extraneous stuff that I could do without.  Like, driving back and forth to pick up a car, etc.  Stuff like that adds nothing to the enjoyment.

Bullshit. Road Rage has never been better than it is in Paradise; starting off by the marina and realizing you've traversed the whole damned city before the event completes is hot stuff. And so is doing infinite Burnout combos along the highway, god damn.

what about navigating the shortcuts in this game? not all of them are good shortcuts. you have to properly navigate the gameworld to know where to go

kind of like....  :omg Burnout Paradise! but instead fairly dumbed down. i mean if you're just looking for a more casual experience than more power to you. i prefer having a little more skill to my name.
Title: Re: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

You're really comparing shortcuts in a straightforward racer to navigating through a city and trying to stay on the correct route to the finish line?

Watching or memorizing a map doesn't have shit to do with skill. Stop with the bullshit.
Title: Re: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit
Post by: Bebpo on December 13, 2010, 07:52:13 PM
Paradise was easy to navigate after a few hours.  The city is very distinct and after a while you learn the entire map and it's in your head.

Honestly I think Paradise is almost flawless.  60fps, great sense of speed and racing model, awesome world to explore and mess around with friends online or find collectables offlines, tons and tons of race variety, awesome mini-challenges both online and offline, great career progression, great crashes, great DJ Atomika, just overall a huge perfect racer.  Basically my dream arcade racer.

But the crash mode is horrid.  If they had the Revenge style crash mode in there somehow as well, it would've been the best racing game ever.

Paradise is so good that every year or two I delete my save and start over and it's just as fresh and fun as it was when it first came out and I get addicted and play 10 hours straight.

I never quit a race in paradise.  If I lost or was losing bad I'd sit still for 4 seconds and let the event retire and then drive to the next corner and give that one a shot.  I loved how the open-world let you go from event to event without having to click through menus.  You're always driving, no interruptions.

Now I've got 78¢ left on my iTunes account (no registered CC). And I can't even gift the iPad app to anyone. FFFUUU...

This game is just boring. There's no personality, no car customization, no real reason to play it.

I have a US debit card, tried that on my iTunes account, and bingo. iPhone version of the game is pretty fun! Definitely worth the 99¢ -- even worth the 198¢ if I count my wasted iPad version.

Be sure to add us when you do play it. Autolog really adds a new  dimension to the way you play the game.

how are the peeps playing this on pc?

I have everything maxed out, 1920x1200, 4xSSAA, high-res textures and I'm getting anything from 30-60 fps, depending on how busy the screen is. Game looks absolutely phenomenal tho.

when there are 6 cars on screen it's 30-40 fps

anything less busy than that tho ranges from 45-60.

here are my specs:

W7 x64 (courtesy of the Cruncheons :bow2)
Core2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83ghz
ATI 5870
4Gb ram

here are a couple of screencaps I took for those on the fence for the PC version, resized to 1440x900

there is a photomode you can use anytime via the pause menu, but I thought I'd show you actual gameplay.

Got this in on the 360 from gamefly. Fun game.

the auto-log stuff makes it enjoyable because you aren't really racing the other people on the track. You are really just racing against the times of the other people which is better than the rather bland and dumb rubberbanding ai racers.

Looks nice. Controls well. Although I seem to have trouble picking up and using shortcuts.

Haven't tried the multiplayer. Will probably give that a spin tomorrow.
