Castlevania sprite rip looks horrid.

Hydro Thunber XBLA looks sweet.  TR Diablo looks really solid.

Castlevania looks like some kind of flash game.  Ugh.

Limbo is still beautiful as ever but I'm not sure about how well it'll play.

Hydro Thunder Hurricane and Lara Croft seem like day one no brainers to me.

Very weak lineup this year. The only game I'm looking forward to is Hydro Thunder. Kinda interested in Lara Croft and Limbo, Castlevania looks bad, and I couldn't care less about Monday Night Combat. Oh well, there's plenty of other good XBLA games coming out so whatevs

Stats and numbers and yummy Igavania

Lara Croft-

Could be neat. Getting a familiar vibe to it that really itches my nuts

Hydro Thunder-

Meh

Monday Night Combat-

Meh

Limbo-

Jonathan Blow game, refuse to ever support him

I will say they seemed to have nailed the subtitle of the Castlevania game - Harmony of Dispair.  It certainly looks the part.

After some meticulous research, Limbo is revealed to not be anywhere near Mr. Blow the loser.

Limbo is cleared for purchase (pending not suckage)

E3 2010: Castlevania XBLA Preview
Don't despair -- now you can take a friend into Dracula's castle with you.
June 14, 2010
by Daemon Hatfield

We just played a couple games of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, the new six-player Castlevania game coming to Xbox Live Arcade this summer. Harmony of Despair is a 2D side-scrolling Castlevania that looks quite similar to the post-Symphony of the Night games we've been playing on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS for years. Apart from its looks, though, this is a pretty unique spin on the Castlevania formula. It's designed as a co-op game for up to six players that works like raids in World of Warcraft.

There are six levels, each guarded by a boss that must be hunted down and murdered. The maps are expansive, full of traps, shortcuts, and dead ends. Here's the thing: these levels and bosses are designed to be attempted many times over. Not only are the bosses powerful, but you only have 10 minutes to find them. You are more than likely to fail the first couple times you try. Luckily, you retain all the items and monies you collect on a "raid." So the formula goes: try a level, fail, buy and equip better items, and make it a little farther next time. You don't earn experience points and level up your character, but you are constantly finding new items and earning money that can buy you cool stuff. The next time you try that level, you'll be better equipped for it.

The more players you have the easier it will be to complete each level, but you can always fly solo if that's more your style (or if you're just unpopular). Five characters are available to choose from, each pulled from a previous Castlevania game. Alucard, from Symphony of the Night, is bound to be a popular choice. Shanoa, from Order of Ecclesia, is another option I noticed. Each character behaves as they would in their own game. Shanoa, for instance, can use her magnetic abilities to cling to certain hooks in the environment and gain access to new areas. The character you choose will determine the path you take to the boss. But they all have the same core abilities like slide, double jump, and backwards dash. Yes, with only five characters, you will be playing with twins in a six-player game.

On my first try playing level one I ran around looting treasure chests and slicing up familiar skeleton enemies (I was Alucard). But I ended up running into a dead end and time ran out before I could make it to the boss. On my second try I had a better idea of where to go and eventually came face to face with the guardian: a two-legged, no-armed behemoth that shoots a giant laser and sprays poisonous blood. There is a nice bit of foreshadowing in this level, as you can see the laser blast piercing through the halls of the castle long before you reach the boss. When you whittle the boss's health down enough the floor will cave in and you'll plummet to a platform below – where a mess of enemies await. The whole gang was too much for me to handle and I met my second demise. This is where more players would come in handy. It's also possible to make it to the monster party ahead of time and clear out the enemies so that when you fall down with the boss it doesn't have any henchmen left.

To get your bearings and plan your route through a level, you can zoom way, way out. You'll be able to see all enemies and other players in the castle, but you're so small on the screen it's probably not possible to play this way. Each level will have a few special areas where you can switch your equipment, but you'll need to do it fast because the clock won't stop counting down. Enemies won't stand around waiting for you to finish, either.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is a fun new take on this long-running franchise and we can see why Microsoft picked it to be included in Summer of Arcade. Summer of Arcade starts in July so you won't have to wait long to posse up and go after those bosses.

This + co-op = boner city. I'd like some new sprites, but if the level design and boss encounters are halfway decent then I'll happily shell out some space dollars for it

Wha'...? Then why buy TF2 or Monday Night Combat at all? It's entirely based around competitive multiplayer!

Edit: hurrrr. Reading comprehension FTL. OK, part of Orange Box. NVM, that's fine. If you want, we can pop a few of the TF2 'cheevs which don't require ranked matches.

Limbo, July 21: This black and white puzzle platformer will draw you into its surreal world.
Hydro Thunder Hurricane, July 28: This multiplayer racer on water is a cult favorite from back in the Dreamcast days.
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, August 4: A Symphony of the Night-style Castlevania game designed for six-player co-op.
Monday Night Combat, August 11: A multiplayer, Team Fortress-style third-person shooter.
Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light, August 18: This isometric co-op adventure is a big departure from previous Tomb Raiders.

Each game will set you back $15. Microsoft will be rewarding gamers that download all five titles with 1200 Microsoft Points ($15), so you basically get one for free. Download at least three and you'll be reimbursed 400 Points ($5).

Curious about Limbo. I think it looks cool but might be just an artsy gimmick game.
Hydro Thunder Hurricane. I'll wait for a sale one day on Hydro Thunder.
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. Very curious about this one although I'm scared it seems like a gimmick game.
Monday Night Combat. Very interested in MNC. Will try out the demo and see some reviews.
Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light. This looks darn cool but I'll wait for some reviews.

Will get Lara Croft on PC since Lara Croft = always superior on the PC platform since TR1.

Last year only Splosion Man was 800pts in the summer of arcade lineup, oh, Turtles Reshelled "was" going to be 1200 points, but then they "reduced" the price to 800, as some other sick marketing initiative. Apparently the game was a stinker and not even worth 400!

I was getting Castlevania anyway

Turtles Reshelled wasn't awful but they should've included the original as an option.  Meh.

Diablo Croft?

Honestly I just think its the perspective that encourages people to say that. 30 weapons isn't exactly Diablo. The more appropriate comparison looks to be Ikari Warriors or any other dual analog shooter mixed in with some light platforming.

Basically one thing Ive learned about these artsy indie platformers is they are really good bait for gushing "games are art" reviews.

Still, Limbo's graphical style is pretty awesome IMO, so I'll definitely give the trial a whirl.

I think Braid was a good and creative gimmick wrapped in a very pretentious wrapper. I have no problem liking "artsy" games. The only thing annoying about artsy games is the people who fall in love with them and won't shut up about them. For example I felt the same way about portal.

I couldn't get past the spider. Also: creepy game is filled with creeping sense of dread. It's effective, but I was hoping more for "veiled menace" than "repeated goring of a clearly young child."

Destination Arcade has the artistic and UI design sense of an intern project that was greenlit for general distribution as a pat on the head. It's really ugly, and doesn't even follow common 360 control practices. :yuck

The dragon prop unlocks possibly randomly. Mine was in a game in the "G" category, not MtG. But I'll keep my Deathspank avatar dragon prop instead. He's fat.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I noticed the bear trap, assumed I would lead the spider to it. I begrudgingly approached the spider, hopped around, finally stopped. It targeted me, I moved, it slammed into the ground. I tried luring it out. I tried running past it (that was gross). Could not get it to follow me to the bear trap. If it fell, I can solve the problem... AS SOON AS MY 360 COMES BACK FROM FUCKING REPAIR.

I didn't feel much in the way of dread. I thought it was kind of dull. I'd like to see what kind of puzzles come later in the game, because the demo was full of empty space punctuated with easy 2 second events.

Destination Arcade seems to be shit.

If I had points, I'd probably get Limbo.  I need some for Harmony of Despair, Shank, and Scott Pilgrim.

also, since when did the cost for downloadable games become $15? I remember most of them being $10 but recently everything is $15.  I remember people complaining about that Penny Arcade rpg being more expensive in the past (or was that $20), but now it seems to be the standard.
Title: Re: Summer of Arcade 2010 XBLA

I like it. My first impression was a bit negative. That here was a game that was just another artsy bit of fluff that was over-rated. But once you start to get going on it, its a pretty solid little environmental puzzler platformer. I like it more than Braid because this is a more solid and less experimental concept and its pretty easy to pick up and play. It's very simple but that's a good thing. Certainly the art and aesthetic help out my enjoyment but it seems to be a solid title so far.

Most games are now $15. The cheap ones are $10. That's the new pricing standard. Honestly I'm fine with that. As long as the game is good I don't mind spending $15 dollars. And XBLA games in general are much better than when the service originally started so I don't mind the bump in price.

Limbo is enjoyable although it's honestly only about 3 or 4 hours so if your enjoyment is based on time its gonna be a quick 15 bucks.

I'm about halfway through it and I'm enjoying myself. Only been stuck so far at one part for about 10 or 15 minutes but when I figured out the solution I felt it was clever and well deserved. Much easier than Braid by comparison which I got stuck on fairly early and never came back to.

How hard would it be to beat the game in one sitting and dying less than 5 times?
Title: Re: Summer of Arcade 2010 XBLA
Post by: Stoney Mason on July 22, 2010, 01:26:02 AM
It's very possible to beat the game in one sitting. I could have beat it this evening but I took a break and I'll finish it tomorrow evening.

As far as dying, it's not really about the dying. The dying is just sort of the penalty for not beating a puzzle. So sometimes you die the first time you come across something because you weren't sure what to expect but you easily bypass it on the second go around.

There are definitely a few puzzles where once you do them you feel good about yourself although most of the game is relatively easy. I've been stuck twice at two different places so far. The first I mentioned earlier. I stopped tonight on a puzzle that I couldn't figure out. The good thing is that none of the puzzles are bullshit. They are all pretty logical and feasible. Sometimes these games can get quite cheap but that hasn't been the case at all here.

I really like it despite it being short. The best comparison I suppose would be braid and portal. Both of those were very short also. I like this better than both of those. Mainly because of the aesthetic and the art and story. It's just kinda a cool game to play. It's not the best game of the year or anything but it feels different than the usual fare. Has a Ico vibe mixed with that sort of cinematic platformer type gameplay of Another world which you don't get very often in modern gaming.

I just mean more frequent, and engaging. I played for a good 20 minutes yesterday and did a lot of running to the right, and I'd like that to be punctuated by more than just hoping on some twigs and pushing a trap or two back and forth. Say what you will about Braid but there were almost zero screens without a puzzle.

I've seen video of the later areas, with big gears and the dude being chased by ghouls and stuff, that reminded me of Oddworld and might be more up my alley.

Is there level select when you are done?

Yeah, I'll buy all 3 of those at $10, but since I'm not in a rush to play them I will pass at $15.  $10 and under is an impulse purchase for a videogame.  If I see something I'm interested on steam sale for $10 or less I'll usually buy it.  $15 for me is out of that impulse range and I pass on the majority of steam sales that are $15.

I won't comment on the quality aspect since I haven't played it but calling out derivative in the video game industry seems like a waste of time. Everything is derivative of everything. Doesn't stop things from being good.

technically every game is derivative yes, but generally I'll only use the term when a game looks to be derivative in a blatant, unpleasant way. (see: Monday Night Combat)

I won't overly argue this as its kind of pointless without knowing whether it sucks or not but compared to most other shooters on the console platform this is one of the least derivative shooters out there by comparison in the shooter genre. I'm sure there are some similarities between this and some other games ala TF2. But without having played it myself I'm not willing to go there. Not to mention the people who made TF 2 themselves put out a dog shit version on consoles so its no like there is much competition in this space.

Im in New Zealand, and It'll go up late Wednesday night my time (we're 16 Hours ahead of East Coast US). Shit, I could just take Thursday off work. Been working my ass off lately. Hmm am considering it. Then I can work at being one of the first to 200 it! :hyper A bit worried about the "Boned" achievement though. I hope it doesn't "bone" me  :'(

Then, what would be really funny, is if the game blew dick!

No, I'm saying it because it's in fact, a turd game. Like Blur. Hope THIS also helps.
If it's a turd game, why is everybody who's actually played it saying that it's good? But it's okay, like I said, your taste in racing games is awful anyways.  :patel

Because they're dumb? That's like asking "How come I couldn't get my sister a better gift than a flash game?"

Hope this helps - loser
Next thing I know, you're going to bring up the IGN review in a lame-ass attempt to cover your ass. We all know your taste in racing games is awful, but why do you have to take it out on me?

That review also had other complaints. Like the shitty gear upgrades which is more of an issue to me. Although of course a review is just an opinion among many. I'm saying I was skeptical and still am. But obviously I'll wait for other reviews or impressions from people who actually play it.

Red Dead pack is 800 points. Its basically just new maps for multiplayer matches, some new skins, a new weapon (tomahawk) and new cheevs. Not really worth the price if you dont play the multiplayer. Ive been going bananas over that shit the past week so am really keen for new maps to work on my golden gun challenges.

That first dungeon wasn't amazing, but the second one looks dull as fuck. If that's how creative the platforming and item placement is, why not make them randomly generated?

I could go for a Castlevania lootfest, but not like that. And no local multi?

Tried the demo, didn't like it much.

Im taking a real fanboy stance with this game. If you didnt like it you either suck, or you just didnt "get it", man. I've got zero tolerance for any bad words about CV HD on internet message boards :punch

The game really shines in multiplayer, in 6 player games the phattest loot flows like wine.

And all the reviewers complaints about the difficulty really shows how frickin useless these guys are. The game has not thrown a challenge at me yet, I just sold some items I picked up and bought a Gladius Sword for Alucard from the shop. Most enemies in the first 3 levels die from 1-2 hits now. Wtf is the deal here. Also I read in a few reviews: "waahhhh I died a few times on the same boss". Theres a gameplay concept which is fairly new which these guys may not have experienced in a game before. Its called "practicing, learning patterns, and getting better". And if you die, you keep all gear you've picked up which can go towards upgrading your character. Not unforgiving in the slightest.

Yeah they have more HP (bosses have a ton), but with 6 players you still steamroll!

Anyways I'll be on from like 7pm Friday night EST (midday Saturday for me  :P) so lets get it on.

So it's good? I heard some people harrumping that you move too slow and it's basically a glorified CV chat room.

It's about what you'd expect out of a remixed Igavania built around co-op and some Diablo-lite looting. I think it's pretty awesome, but I am predisposed to like both Castlevania and loot, so I am biased.

So very hardcore bad with money, but hey, Castlevania! :hyper My gamer tag is the same as my sn here, I just cleared chapter one by my bad self with Al. I think he moves and attacks a bit slower than he did in the SotN days, but it's not super slow. Most likely will be on some tonight. How does the Boned achievement even work? It says in a co-op game if everyone is bones, it's game over.

I just beat the first boss with Jonathan by jumping on it over and over. This game is  so amazing.

Also you can use the same equipment across characters, so you dont have to be scared about equipping that awesome armor on a poopy character (Shanoa)

Well the game allows for 6 players at once, so 5 of us have to be Skeletons and one dude pwns the boss. Then the cheev will pop for everyone. Easiest way would be to play for bit, then go back to level one. 5 people need to jump into the spikes then become skeletons and just hide in a corner. Then one strong dude just needs to upstairs and curb stomp the Gergoth.

i guess the cheev could come naturally on a harder stage, but IMO its more or less set up to be boosted. Needing 6 players is a pain. Every other cheev is super do-able.

I think it's a toss-up between Jonathan and Alucard.

Soma's souls are confusing to deal with, and Shanoa is crap by default. Not a fan of magic so Charlotte gets dumped. Jonathan is cool with his emphasis on sub-weapons, and Alucard feels nice to use period.

Perhaps there is but either way its silly to release it without the feature. I wouldn't buy it until it had the patch and there is no guarantee I will purchase it down the road as I may want something else at that point. So either they are incompetent or they are doing it to have some sort of feature parity. Either way they may have lost my purchase.

Yea, but you don't get the same stuff, at least when different characters. It'd be nice if I could play as Jonathon and still have my Alucard homie give me shit for my Alucard.

Can you only use Water of Life once per stage or something? We will pick up more than 1 but sometimes you can only revive once, it seems.

yeah, that's what I'm thinking.  If this wasn't Eidos, maybe I would believe the game wasn't finished.  But this is the same company that does things like release two DLC packs for Tomb Raider Underworld exclusive on the 360, the whole Joker thing for the PS3 batman AA, and just recently put out a Kane and Lynch 2 demo that has about three times the options on the 360 compared to the PC/PS3 demo.

honestly I had no clue the PC version was releasing so late.  I was planning on getting it when the 360 version was coming out thinking it was releasing at a nice empty part before classes start up and big game rush begins.  Now it's coming out around games like Halo Reach, Civ 5, and a bunch of other games.

Okay it seems like everyone whos anyone is getting Castlevania - we should plan a big game for this coming weekend. Im really keen to knock out the "Boned" achievement. Also keen to start tackling hard mode!

I was playing Alucard but you really need to be part of a team for him to be effective. I was trying to solo level 1 on hard with and just got owned as hes got no good tricks (you have to fight most things face to face and his magic blows). Im upgrading my Shanoa now and her lightning spell is super awesome and making hard mode much easier.

Fricking amazing game I have to say, currently the #1 360 game on Gamefaqs! Ive been reading the forum there for good tips.

Title: Re: Summer of Arcade 2010 XBLA
Post by: iconoclast on August 08, 2010, 04:51:46 PM
Yeah it's pretty awesome. I've been trying out the other characters, and it seems like Shanoa is pretty overpowered. Her magic attacks are REALLY good and her glyphs are really powerful too since she can do a two hit combo all the time. Plus there's all these magnets around the level that only she can use. Once again, :bow OoE

There's some nice little easter eggs too. If you hold RT when selecting the color of a character, it switches to Japanese voices. And people are saying if you solo the final stage on hard mode you unlock a gamerpicture for the character you used. Don't know if that's true though but that would be pretty cool.

is there a general idea of how good characters get as you play? early impressions make it seem like Shanoa is great.

Does Jonathan stick with the whip the entire time? that kinda scared me off using him.  Soma starts with a crummy weapon.  Alucard is good.  Haven't tried the other one.
Title: Re: Summer of Arcade 2010 XBLA
Post by: demi on August 08, 2010, 07:20:42 PM
Soma can dual wield just like Alucard. He just gets a doofy Axe.

Jonathan is whip-only, with an emphasis on sub-weapons.

Post by: cool breeze on August 08, 2010, 07:24:01 PM
yeah, I'll probably stick with Shanoa.  The main reason I want to play as Alucard is because his sprite is so much better than the others.  The julius one will probably be the worst looking one.

Man I seriously need some tips cause I have absolutely no clue how to play this shit.

When I press and hold up it seems to make my hair go all crazy. Also, when I stand near someone else it says "RT DUAL CRUSH" but I can't seem to get that to do anything either  ???
Title: Re: Summer of Arcade 2010 XBLA
Post by: The Sceneman on August 08, 2010, 08:20:25 PM
Nah dont think pics ever come bundled with themes. I'd say they'll put some more character pics up soon though with the DLC. CV fanboiz will eat those up.

Sho Nuff: if youre Shanoa pushing up is how you absorb glyphs. Look for those glowing white witches, when the blue crap appears above their heads hold up and suck their delicious fluid to unlock new spells. Fulgur (lightning) is essential. Dual crush is a co-op attack. When you push RT the other player needs to do it too when next to you to activate the move. Its hard to do though, me and iconoclast managed to do it on the first boss and get the achievement for it, but it took a few tries.

They float around and glow white, they wear a hooded robe. Also found in chapter 4. You cant absorb anything from the blue ice maidens.

Also look out for the green laser skeletons in level 5. You can get a sweet beam attack from them.

I like it a lot, and I'm not huge into the 2D castlevania games (I used to love them on the GBA but they were the same thing over and over so I stopped). I really like this one though because of the WHOLE castle being on screen at once, with all the monsters active, and seeing your 5 friends all wrecking shit at the same time. It almost reminds me of Todd's Adventures in Slime World, an amazing co-op side-scroller that nobody played because it was on the Lynx.

That being said, I'm not too sure of the longevity of it. I was getting into some games where they were just breezing through the levels in about 6 minutes or something. That might have been because it was set to normal difficulty though.

fuck the second boss.  his head blocks the door and I can't reach the puppet he's holding.

also, the collision seems whacked in this, at least when playing with Shanoa.

what the fuck.  he goes through walls, far away from where you were, and you can't even reach him in time. even if you know his destination.  I don't think they expect anyone to play this single player.
Title: Re: Summer of Arcade 2010 XBLA
Post by: iconoclast on August 09, 2010, 05:36:32 PM
Yeah, once he starts moving you need to follow him ASAP. When you're going through the level, you can push some crates in front of the iron maidens, so he won't be able to use them. You can do that to guide him down a specific path basically. He's the worst boss in the game though, it gets better from there.

I haven't had any problems with collision. You can reach the dolls, just get a little closer.

Solo is definitely harder to begin with. I'd try just jumping into some random multiplayer games, and have those guys "rush" you. Then you can get to the higher levels earlier and nab yourself some better equipment, making eariler levels easier to solo.

Spent last night farming Death solo on normal, to try and nab some of Shanoa's other weapon glyphs. Beat him 5 times and got nothing but crappy capes and food. Grindan is so sweet.

Also been trying to solo level 1 on hard. I can get up the boss no prob but he always owns me  :( Need a hand for this hard mode, any of you guys up to it yet?

I'm gonna jump on in a half hour or so.  But I haven't finished the game on normal yet.  Up to chapter 5.

yeah sorry about sucking ass the other day, I had ben playing RDR multiplayer for like 4 hours without a break before playing with you, so my brain had turned to putty. I can beat level 5 solo now so I've probably improved.

Cleared it in a co-op game.  Got hard unlocked now.  Still haven't been able to get the glyph from the green skeletons yet, because EVERY.  SINGLE.  TIME.  I would get near them the other guys I was playing with would kill them before I got the chance.  But I've got the lightning glyph so it's time to level that up and start annihilating everything.

yeah I "re-rolled" with with Shnoa, my lightning is level 5 now and cooks most baddies one hit. Its a great attack.

If youre wanting to get the skeleton glyph just do level 5 solo.

Teamed up with with an aussie and he helped me through heaps of hard mode. Up to chapter 5 on hard now. I need to keep farming level 5 & 6 normal for Pneuma and Lapiste wepaons for Shanoa.

that wraps it up for Summer of Arcade (they actually bothered to call it Winter of Arcade on the dash in the Southern Hemisphere. Awww.)

Only Castlevania saved the line-up from being completely dismal. Good jon M$

They should've waited for Shank and Comic Jumper to bolster the line-up. But hey why do I care? Comic Jumper will most likely be saved from the 1200 point price tag

The Lara Croft game is all kinds of awesome.  Best XBLA game I've played in months.

Yeah, wow, holy shit is this game POLISHED.  The game play is fantastic (and the combat is like 1000 times better than the traditional Tomb Raider games) and feels like a great mix between Tomb Raider with a bit of Diablo thrown in.  I like that there's a bit of a loot system going on and that there's optional challenge rooms to unlock (from the demo they open when you beat some of the larger enemies that can be avoided), where you use your jumping/shooting/pushing skills to get to items or upgrades.  There's also additional rewards for performing certain actions and beating levels within a certain amount of time.  Someone on GAF said a stage he completed in around 51 minutes had a nine minute completion challenge bonus.

At 2GB, I was thinking of waiting to buy until the PSN version is released (or if it would run decently enough on my netbook), but since they are promising the first set of DLC to 360 owners for free, I decided to just go ahead and get it on 360. Tried the demo and purchased it soon after.

Sceneman, the DLC co-op is going to be free (and it's not the free DLC they are promising; the game is supposed to be getting additional leves/playable characters).

Also it's really nice to have a TR game without any camera problem bullshit.   :P

So I buy Tomb Raider.

When you finish the demo and buy the game, you don't get any achievements. Kind of annoying. I go back to the first level to replay it and re-do the 'get all the red skulls' cheev. All the red skulls are gone - the game remembers that you got them, and I think you keep the reward for it, but it does not award the achievement. So I have to do it on a second level, or use a save file on a separate memory device. OK..

Also, every time you cross between areas (and I don't mean walk off a screen) the game stutters and gags and the music comes to a halt. It's really annoying and it happens A LOT. The demo was silky smooth. I was playing with two different Gamertags logged in, I don't know if maybe it was leaderboard postings or something that caused the interruption. But it really, really sucks.

Last year:
Shadow Complex - great
Trials HD - great
Splosion Man - amazing
MvC2 - great
Turtles Reshelled - the only turd

This year:
Limbo - good
Hydro Thunder - turd
Castlevania - amazing
Monday Night Combat - turd
Lara Croft - turd

2008:

Geometry Wars 2
Bionic Commando Rearmed
Castle Crashers
Braid
Galaga Legions

GW2 and BCR are godlike. Castle Crashers was great until my save got deleted. Braid was fun for one playthrough like any puzzle game. Never played Galaga.

2009 was good too but it still falls short. Trials HD is godlike. Shadow Complex and Splosion Man are good, MvC2 is great, and TMNT is bad.

I only bought Castlevania this year.  Admittedly, I don't like it as much as I was expecting to.  Castlevania is one of my favorite series and I adore loot, but I dunno, of what I've played I haven't been feeling it.  I probably would have continued playing if it had a leveling system as well as the items.

I do want to play Limbo but I didn't want it to be another Braid situation and held off until I heard reasonable people talk about it.  Tomb Raider is the other one I want and I'll get that in a month on PC.  Will also pick up Dead Rising 2 Demo whenever that comes out.

I'm going to buy Hydro Thunder, Limbo, and probably Lara Croft once they are on sale. They all look good, but there's nothing that really sparks my interest this year. Then again, I wasn't interested in Trials HD before it came out and it wound up being one of the top 3 games on the service, so what do I know.

What, does this not sound reasonable to you?

Quote from: Eurogamer
The trouble is that Limbo strays from the personal touch at its soul. One of its sweetest surprises came in the first couple seconds of play. I hit the jump button, and when my character landed, the controller vibrated. It's mild, yet it says a lot. It says that this is just a boy, not a futuristic robot or a genetic-freak hedgehog, so when he hits the ground with both feet, he feels it. And you do, too, by way of a lopsided motor in the Xbox 360 controller. With one touch (literally), the black silhouette on screen struck me as a full-bodied person.

It's very easy to get annoyed by the hipster gaming media when it comes to their critical darlings. They try so hard and mostly what they do is turn people off from trying certain games imo.

Fortunately Limbo is actually a good game. The gimmick and atmosphere makes it better. But at its core it has solid game mechanics and puzzles. And while its artsy. Its far less annoyingly so than Braid.

I haven't bought anything yet, but I might get one this week. I dunno if I should get Castlevania or MNC though.

Sorry, but I need an unbiased opinion. :lol

Beezy, download the trials and see for yourself.

Castlevania = Co-op game play, SHIT TONS of grinding on the same six levels.
MNC = Team-based death match/defense action; a small variety of maps and "grinding" comes from leveling up to custom classes to get better stats.

I did, but I like both of them. I think I'll go with MNC because I doubt I'll have anyone to play co-op with in Castlevania. Two of my best friends have it, but they're always too busy to get on Live.

Problem with Castlevania is if you try and get a team going online via matchmaking you'll get kicked if you're not up to Chapter 6 Hard already.

You'll need a couple of friends who are at the same level as you to battle through the game with initially. Or you can get rushed...

I play Castlevania pretty much every day but you'll only really catch me online during weekends due to the time difference. I'd be pleased to help you out if you get CV.

p.s if you like both games why not buy both?

More people on my friendlist are playing MNC right now, so I think I'm gonna get that. I'll get them all except maybe :piss Hydro Thunder :piss2 eventually, but I'm a filthy poor right now.

The cripplingly poor performance on Lara Croft was solved by copying my save to the HDD. Lame.

But if you get them all right now, you pick up Hydro Thunder for free, right?
