Title: Kindle vs Kindle DX
Post by: GilloD on June 22, 2010, 10:00:23 AM
I almost ordered a Kindle this week! Good thing I waited, it dropped 70 bucks to 189$!

So why the fuck would anyone pay $300 extra for the DX? Am I missing something? That's $100 an inch.

Is the Kindle still the best reader?

I liked the Nook in concept, and now you can get it for $149, but last I checked it was fairly sluggish. It seems like the time of Kindle3s and Nook2s is fast approaching, anyway.

I saw yesterday that the B&N CEO is saying there will be far better products for sub-$99 in the next year, so it makes me want to wait.

I'd be all over the regular Kindle but I have no use for the keyboard. A touchscreen is fine for the basic stuff I'd use it for (buying books). What i want is something that is 90% screen that i can beat the crap out of (toss it in my bag without a case, take it everywhere), and I'll do all my buying and so forth on another device.

One of the hazards of going completely digital with books on the iPad is that other members want to use the iPad (because it's awesome) when I want to read. A Kindle is much cheaper than buying a 2nd iPad, and is lighter and better for reading in general. I'm sure there will be a Kindle that's closer to what I want in the very near future though. At the very least, the introduction of the color model will drive the prices of the B&W models into the ground.

This is not the panacea you might think. The formatting of most books out there makes them insanely annoying to read on Kindle. Only about 2% are actually readable for me. You might think "Hey, i read text on a screen all the time", but until you try it, you won't know just how annoying it is.

S.H. - no idea about Kindles, but you can read damn near anything on iPad, one way or the other. .epub, .doc, .pdf, whatever. My experience so far has been: pay the damn $10 if you plan on reading the whole thing on an ereader, if you value your sanity.

Obviously, we're still in the early days of ebook piracy so the situation may 'improve'. Recent books I've downloaded have been much more iPad/Kindle-friendly. But, right now, the chances of me being able to toss out my entire bookshelf and replace with torrented files is zero.

With the amount of money I've spend on books in my life, I don't feel bad about anything much. I already had one of the Larsson books in print as well as on Kindle. It seems so cheap to me that I really don't stress about it either way.

Bear in mind that I lived in Japan for about a decade before Amazon came on the scene, utterly starved of English books other than the few crappy English book stores here. Even after that, I was paying double price to import from the US etc. So $10 for most books just feels like "free". Not that i'd mind if they were all $5, but...

All those features are in the Kindle app too...not sure what the big deal is with you and iBooks! Are you just a sucker for "i" stuff?

But...Whispersync means you never even have to THINK about syncing with the Kindle app(s).

Sell me your Kindle cheap, you hater!

I just downloaded the free iBooks app, and scarfed up some free content. Seems pretty slick. I bet if it were on a 4x resolution screen, I'd be in bonerland right now.
