Title: Final Fantasies XII Zodica Speer Interational Edition 100% For Matching Service
Post by: Don Flamenco on June 30, 2010, 01:34:15 PM
I've got a slim PS2 with some swap magic discs on the way.  Should be here in a few days.  I'm playing FFXII again, but the Zodiac Sphere International edition with the english patch.

Who's in?  Lets do this  8)

I'm streaming it while I play/write the screencap walkthrough I'm doing.  If you need any pointers or anything feel free to ask.  If you've played the game before, the screencaps are mainly pots that have good stuff to find, so you know where to get neat stuff early.  Have fun either way!

I might jump in, but I'm not sure I can finish it before Persona 3 Portable is out, which gets priority. I'm going to finish Magna Carta 2 today or tomorrow, so I'll probably start after I'm done with that.

What all does one need to play imports/backups on a slim?

I have a fat PS2, so I use a flip-top case and Swap Magic discs for imports and burned games. Not sure what you need for other PS2 models, but either way you're going to need something that lets you play game ISOs.

As you all know except OMG RED SCARLETT I have 208 hours logged in in vanilla FF12.

Is it worth it to buy Zodiac Version?

Probably no, huh.

Job system, new quests, revamped game balance the works

modding a slim PS2 to use swap magic is pretty easy.  You need an earlier version of it, without the built in power supply.  If you take off the top part of the case, there are a 3 spots you put poster tape on--2 sensors and that spring nub part in the disc tray.  I can dig out a tutorial if anyone's interested.   also, the game is pretty cheap on ebay.  and patched versions are on torrent sites, of course.

Wouldn't it be cool if Microsoft bought Square and merged their naming departments?  Imagine the synergy!  Then we could have Microsoft Windows Live Final Fantasy 358/2 Essentials 2012 International Zodiac Job System Home Premium Edition.

I had a flip top swap magic ps2 and used that to install a hdd with HDadvance on it. You should do that, it's pretty fuggen fly. don't need boot discs or anything. Only thing I wish I could dump back to the list of games without a hard restart, other than that it's flawless.

Here's a guide for the ps2 slim.

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2096833&postcount=107

you could also buy a flip top for it.

How is the patch applied?

Unless there's something new and better, a program called PPF-o-Matic applies the patch to the iso pretty easily.

I told himu to tell you "cool" and "hi" when you posted that, guess he never did...

Well, depending on what you liked in the original, you may enjoy the "remixing" of stuff in this one.  The jobs, new stuff in pots/shops and stuff (I dunno what new quests there are, himu is on crack).

I don't think so, no.

I couldn't get past Gilgamesh in the original, but I don't see any new ones when comparing the mob hunt list from the original.

There *is* trial mode, maybe you are thinking of that, since it has a couple new things to fight.  Plus the lv90 mode and lv1 mode..which I am going to try later on.

Would kind of make the job system pointless if you could import a save.  At least you can skip cutscenes right off and do the fast forward mode! go go go

Be sure to post what jobs you use and all that stuff.

I think I'll also start this up as soon as I get back my controller with 4 shoulder buttons. The SC2 beta is still down, none of my 360 stuff is appealing at the moment, I don't get paid until the 16th, and it'll probably be more enjoyable with all of you guys playing it, so I figure now is as good a time as any.

Please do a Nocturne thread for your playthrough.  Love that game, but haven't played it in years.

Gonna be tempting to play Persona 4 and Nocturne over FFXII international when I get my PS2 in.  oh and I'm also getting thoroughly hooked to Demon's Souls.  Have you played that yet, Bulleta?

that's understandable.

there still isn't a turn-based JRPG on current systems that lives up to any of the SMT PS2 games.   Playing FFXIII after sinking that much time into last gen FF games and SMT games would be a pretty sad experience.  I think Resonance of Fate is the best turn based game this gen.  but it's just pretty decent, not mind-blowing.

but goddamn demon's souls is amazing.

I think in her case it's mostly cuz they're too fucking expensive, though I don't speak for Scarlet. lol Can't blame her either. Took me about 2-3 years to get into this gen before I bought a 360 for 300.

Yeah, I haven't had a job in a year+ now, and didn't really see anything I wanted for any of the systems before that.  I still have quite a few things I have yet to play through on my systems that I do have.

I'd post about Nocturne but I've gone through it before so it would be random updates and really boring. :(

I'm trying to get the Zodiac Spear right now, but it's being a jerk.  It's the longest taking 1% spawn pot I've ever encountered in the game.

Nah, the only RPGs this gen that have comparable quality to the best PS2 stuff (ie. SMT) is Valkyria Chronicles and Tales of Vesperia. The Last Remnant is great too if you don't mind grinding. Resonance of Fate is also amazing, but that game is purely about gameplay.

And of course Demon's Souls is godlike, but it's structured like an action game with stats. Not a typical RPG.

Yeah, Demon's Souls is akin to the type of "rpg" that Zelda is.  Reflexes play much more of a role than stats.  I'd say it's even more action based than something like the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games which just requires button mashing and basic evasion.

My action game comparisons mainly come from the mission structure (20-30 minute levels with a boss at the end, or levels that are just a boss) and the combat. Like how each enemy has their own attack patterns, you can dodge or block them on reaction and then punish accordingly. Take Flamelurker for example, he will attacks fairly aggressively and does big damage (well, everyone does big damage), but all of his moves are dodgeable and you can punish him if you strike at the right time. It's more reminiscent of a Ninja Gaiden boss battle if you ask me. Of course it has a pretty thick RPG side as well, with stats, classes, spells, crafting, etc. It feels like a mashup of the two genres to me.

And now I've made Penelo a Red Mage. Seems like a good all-around class since she gets time magic, green magic, white magic, black magic, AND arcane magic...

fran overall has probably the worst all around stats as she's not the best at anything

I still use her tho

my team: vaan, fran, balthier

i fear that if i got ff12i I would make every character have a unique job and level them accordingly. I would spend 9999 hour with this game.

According to a chart in the Game Mechanics faq at gamefaqs Ashe edges Panelo consistently until they equalize at lvl 99. Ashe also gets the nod for slightly higher mana pool even at lvl 99. Splitting hairs really but going by the numbers.../shrug
I always used them both anyways. Ashe in cloth with bow as prime healer/debuffer, Panelo in leather with gun as buffer/remedy.

Eyes kept being down, so I made a map of floor 2 instead of 1 first, but no biggie.  Is this readable?

The yellow rectangles are doors, red are walls you break, the blue+yellow numbers are where pots/chests are, and the grey+purple ones are how many of these black pearl things are needed to light the corner up.  Oh, the green parts are the hidden rooms that don't show up on the map.  Thanks!

I'm writing a guide for the International version of the game, and since there's no in-game map of that Great Crystal area, and the Subterra place sucks mega ass when you first go there, I made a map for both areas to include in the guide.  Have all 3 maps now, just need to plop their names in the middle pretty much.

I guess it depends on what counts as 100%.  I got all the new FINAL FANTASY weapons, but I have no idea how to fish and don't get stuff like the Tournesol.

Can't you get a zodiac spear for sure in that area in the bog area inside the castle you reach later, with 12 chests lying around with one definitely being a zodiac spear as long as you don't open certain chests throughout the game? I never got it but I read that's a sure way to get it. Game doesn't need it anyway. Basch with the katana with buffers etc is all I needed. Never got Tournesol either, too much grindin, no cheevs.

Some of the loot for the Tournesol I guess is grindy.  Have never had a need to get it, since I have better? weapons I think.  Yeah, could get a Zodiac Spear at Nabudis if you didn't open a handful of chests early on.  Can get it from a 1% pot in the Henne Mines too, and it's the same in the International one, except you can open any pot as the "easy" method is to get all the trophy hunts killed, or from a 1% pot at the Henne Mines:

The boss of the dungeon has the 2nd most powerful weapon in the whole game, and you are more likely to get it than the Zodiac Spear (plus any job can equip it), the Torango Tower or whatever it's been translated to:

Wow, I thought 1 hour on speed up mode was a long time for Yiazmat.

Yes you can get it that way, guaranteed find but come on: playing with a FAQ just to know which chests NOT to open?

This is the worst thing about japanese games. Obscure, hidden, missable stuff.

And Tournesol doesn't require any grinding at least it didn't in my case. Well maybe for 20 mins.

Yeah, that's why I never got it. I don't bother with faqs till late in jrpgs generally, when the post game shit goes down. I originally put ~120 hours into this game and never 100% it.

Found a stack of save games on gamefaqs I can import to my PS3 (last save was lost when ps3 YLOD'd) will try find something reasonably close to where I left off, feels kinda lame as they'll probably have quite a perfectionist run through going on (I just played no perfectionism) but it'll be cool to go through and finish all the hunts I missed.

Finally got a few hours in today, got up to looking for the sunstone before going to Garamsythe waterway.  I beat the original game last year, so nothing very different yet.  The game feels about 10 times better after playing the turd that is XIII.  And FFXII moogles and chocobos are the best moogles and chocobos.

I went with Hunter for Vaan.  I was reading a bit about jobs on the Gamefaqs board...do you get to pick a second job at some point?  Or is it one job per character per playthrough?

I loved chapter 11 in XIII so much.  I was thinking the whole time "wow, what if they made the entire game like this."

Now I remember they did: FFXII.   8)

Not much, got another hour in.

Penelo is a white mage.  Was going between red and white, but I figured she would make the best white mage.

Balthier = Uhlan

Fran = Black Mage

I noticed that characters get to keep their initial equips, even if it's not on their license.  So I'm leaving Fran with her first bow and arrow instead of the Oak Staff or whatever the first black mage weapon is.  Her magic is already 3 times as strong as any phys attacks in my party at this point, so I don't really need any magic strength boost.  I'm going to try to use a black mage more this time around, since I didn't use one last playthrough of vanilla FFXII.  I think it was because I didn't feel like Libra-ing everything and adjusting gambits accordingly.  Since I battle on Active mode, I don't have much time to mess around with that stuff and I definitely don't want to adjust gambits in each and every new fight.   plus, phys + white magic was all I needed.

The job system was a pretty sweet idea.

When you get back to Rabanastre, you could try to get a Flame Staff for Fran.  It has 34 attack power if you're interested.

Ok, cool.  Can also get the strongest weapon for a BM from the 25% point onward.  My guide is "done" if you want to use it sometime.  Still have to make fixes and add some stuff, but all the screencaps and that stuff is up.  Just hollar.

Final Fantasy XII is one of my favourite games of last gen. I really need to try this version. Don't know if I can handle how addicted I will become though.

I'd love to use it, link me.  I want to plan out my playthrough a bit.  Right now, I'm thinking samurai for Basch, and maybe knight or red mage for Ashe.  I wish there was some kind of generic character recruiting system, so I could use all the jobs in a playthrough...

What jobs did you use?

Here's the text version (still needs to be edited and fixed up though): http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/ff12i050510.SJS.TXT

And the screencaps mentioned are here right now: http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/12icaps001-328.zip

Guide says how to get that Flame Staff (search for "Dustia", and there's youtube vids about it, too).

I prefer going with a main group and a b-team.  Main group is knight/red mage/samurai while b-team is white mage/time mage/breaker.  That will probably change, since I don't seem to actually need breaker anymore (just use Reverse instead).
