Title: Bebpo's Guide to Anime for normal people. Recommendation #2: Black Lagoon
Post by: Bebpo on July 01, 2010, 11:31:04 PM
About a year ago I watched Baccano and it was good.  Not creepy fetish animu loli manchild good, but legitimate cinema watching good.  So I made a recommendation thread:
http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=29577.0

Now it's 2010 and I have new recommendation for normal people who don't watch anime: Black Lagoon
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/bebpo/blacklagoon.jpg)

At first glance, Black Lagoon appears to be a generic action anime.  Guns, Girls, Cursing, a whole lot of Engrish.  80s action meets Spaghetti Western; the A-team meets John Woo's Hard Boiled; pulp that Tarantino would be proud of.  And on the surface that's exactly what it is.

Yet, surprisingly when you watch it and look beyond the cover, you find a show that is quite a bit smarter than what normally fills out the genre.  The characters have depth to them and the stories aren't written to adhere to traditional stereotyping; in Black Lagoon the line between "good" or "evil" is rarely drawn.  The show follows the escapades of a group of a Mercenaries who do jobs in a city that's become a haven to criminals.  Often compared to Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon follows a similar style of entertaining western-inspired short stories instead of a single long plotline.  What sets Black Lagoon apart is that it is a dark and mean show.  Innocent people are often killed (sometimes by the "good" guys) and occasionally parts are hard to stomach.  It's a rough, gritty show.

But instead of doing this to shock or entertain the twisted, the grimness of the world enhances the narrative.  The characters acknowledge the world they live in and how the lead character (a Japanese salaryman dragged into the dark underworld) deals with the bleakness is one of the major themes of the storyline.  (But despite this, it's actually a fun show!)

Often intense and always entertaining.  Black Lagoon is one of the best anime of the 00s.
There's very little "anime" about Black Lagoon show.  It's an intelligent action series for adults and on top of that it features a badass black man.

Highly Recommended

I'd rather recommend something like Planetes, if the target audience is assumed to have any standards.

You know, I didn't think the thread title would cause such a stir.  You normal people sure are a short tempered bunch.

I'd rather recommend something like Planetes, if the target audience is assumed to have any standards.

Planetes is great as is a lot of older stuff like Jin-Roh, Millenium Actress, Memories, Ghibli, etc...

I just recommend things as I watch them.  Was lttp for Baccano last year and just finished Black Lagoon ep24 last night :)

Black Lagoon seems more like the type of show people who've seen some anime and gotten tired of certain cliches than a show for people who's only exposure is Ghibli - is all I'm saying.

On the btw tho' I saw your Baccano thread you linked in the op and promptly started acquiring it, so cheers for that. :3

Bebpo, your big mistake was assuming that there were any "normal people" here.   :P

I see that Black Lagoon was recently released on blu-ray.  Did they clean it up more or add anything to this release?  I know they altered the DVDs from the TV series.

no idea.  It wasn't an HD show originally so like the Champloo boxset it probably looks about the same with minor differences for better or worse.

I guess they just upped the res using the DVD version?

On the DVD they fixed the lazy animations it had  :lol

Why would anyone want to suggest this to non-anime fans anyways?

Stuff you suggest to non-anime fans:

- Cowboy Bebop
- Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal
- Nausicaa
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
- Ninja Scroll
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Porco Rosso
- Whisper of the Heart
- My Neighbors the Yamadas
- Millennium Actress
- Tokyo Godfathers
- Perfect Blue
- Castle in the Sky
- Paprika
- Voices of a Distant Star
- The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
- Now and Then, Here and There

Not stuff like Black Lagoon or even Baccano.

I see no reason to legitimatize shit. Film is film. Who cares if it's a cartoon or not. But I really only suggest to people who I know wouldn't anime. And if I do, I suggest the best of the best, not c or b tier shit.

smh bebpo

You can order the wire from netflix, you have to download and watch LoGH in a foreign language! Most "normal" Americans don't like foreign language stuff.

Non-anime fans is one thing.  Non-anime fans on a gaming forum is another.

That's true, but a lot of non-anime gaming fans tend to have a big thing against anime. So I just lump them in the same pool.

Point is that someone with geek cred's going to be open to a wider spectrum of anime, even if they're not a fan.

I'd recommend certain Miyazaki movies to anyone.  I'd only recommend Cowboy Bebop to someone who won't roll their eyes when they hear the phrase "interplanetary bounty hunters".  If you know someone enjoys Adult Swim, then they might like Cromartie High.  That sorta thing.

I was actually thinking of posting a beg thread of suggestions for the non-anime viewer.  Or rather, for someone who's seen a certain amount of it, but wants to get right to the good stuff and avoid its more annoying conventions (moe, hyperserious philosophical mumbo-jumbo, moe, harems, moe).

That's true, but a lot of non-anime gaming fans tend to have a big thing against shit anime.

Fixed.

Eh, typically though, the general sentiment is that all anime is shit and I can see why they want to distance themselves. But the people who act all high and mighty while getting a hard on for fucking Pixar movies while raising their noses at The Girl Who Leapt Through Time -- just cuz it's Japanese and it's anime so it must be for weeaboo's!!!! -- are a bunch of hypocrites. This extends to the anti-Japanese sentiment I was talking about in that thread that you so mistakingly thought was an anti-western gaming thread.

I think pretty much anybody could watch this, although the movies require more patience and a willingness to watch people talking more than giant mechs fighting. The series though, it's really accessible and hardly has any animu at all.
