God persona games are terrible.  I couldnt even stang the ps1 games.  Too much lame ass story into them.  If you gonna pimp SMT atleast pimp the awesomeness of SMT:SJ, the last boss in the lawful ending side is complete bs.  Didnt finish the game because of it.

My god, the amount of money Nintendo is spending on this

I think they might do 200K units if I'm taking a HUGE push from Nintendo into account, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything with non-Mario titles. Realistically I'd say 100-150K. DQ simply hasn't made a name for itself in the USA despite multiple huge marketing pushes (remember DQ8?).

Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: magus on July 09, 2010, 08:08:21 AM
i played up to the second boss, seems good so far... i had to grind a little before being able to defeat the second boss but it was good stuff, apparently even 3 level can make a huge difference here :lol

the intro was really boring but luckily it didn't last long, one thing that piss me off is that i haven't found any way to see what skills do other than to learn them and use them in battle which seems like a weird oversight considering the game does tell you how many point you need to learn a skill! other than that it's dragon quest...

DQ8 has the greatest character ever :smug

Yeah, they have the nice verdana font for menus and such. But talking and battles are like

Bobopenis attacks! Bobopenis deals 5 damage to the teeny peeny cat.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: magus on July 09, 2010, 08:21:56 AM
you know one thing that really bothers me is how your character and the important NPC are 3D models while the unimportant NPC are just 2D sprite's... it just looks weird

reached the fourth boss,buff/debuff seems really overpowered! the boss debuffed my defense twice and he went from doing 10 damage to attack to like 25/30! i basicaly lost as soon as he debuffed me since there was no way for me to keep up with the healing

edit: FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKK :lol
i didn't realize i could get new party member at the inn,up until now i soloed the game believing you would be able to recruit people after reaching the job changing temple :lol
oh well at least the hero is like level 15,i guess catching up the other member isn't going to take a lot

in DQ3 the king was all like "go recruit some party member, here are some extra club so that you don't get a bunch of unarmed guys" here they don't even bother telling you much less give you stuff to give to your extra guys :-\
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: demi on July 09, 2010, 12:12:08 PM
I'm pretty sure they do tell you to get more members. Around when you talk to the King. He goes "get more members and get strong, I imagine you don't want to go fight him alone"

Also new recruits come with a weapon and clothing

AHAHAHA

Red Scarlet: will I be able to still enjoy DQ8 after playing DQ9?

I loved the beginning of DQ8 (saved just in first town, after 20 mins of playtime lol).

Scarlet has not played DQ9. But if you want to know how awesome DQ8 is, look at my avatar and tag!

Also new recruits come with a weapon and clothing

Okay good so you don't have to buy new equipment for them at the get go.

This game's pretty good. I approve. No way to speed up text though.

Are you fucking kidding me?

This battle system is going to be slow as fuck

action get executed as the text scroll so i don't think it's slow at all, plus every battle has been at worst 4 vs 3 so there is no battle where you have to see 5-6 slime taking their action... slowly... ala DQ3,there are also other neat little trick to speed up combat like if you have only one target the game doesn't ask what you want to target, plus enemies are visible on the map and they don't attack you if you overpower them! no more getting annoyed to death by random battles! yay for progress!

anyway i recruited a thief,a cleric and a warrior (i was sure i wanted a warrior and a cleric, that leaved the thief, the monk and the mage,my experience with spells so far has been mehtastic and the ability for the thief to steal stuff comes veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery handy) i grinded them up to around level 10,bought them some equip and then proceeded to kick the ass of the 4th boss altough the only one who survived was the main character which went to level 18 :lol

Abilities take way too many points. You have to gain upwards to 3 levels just to get +10 STR with a weapon.

Yay 3 points, I can't do shit with this.

It's decent, no need to persuade yourself. I think DQ8 poops on it though because I prefer a more streamline and focused game than this MMO job system flooze fest that's looser than himu's asshole (see: 3, 7, 6(?) )
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: magus on July 10, 2010, 07:28:07 AM
i finaly reached the job changing temple and unlocked one of the extra bonus class, the gladiator... the gladiator skillset comes with HP and strenght bonus so i guess i finaly found where i'm spending all my skill points, the extra side quest in the job changing temple are a pain in the ass, three of them require you to be at level 15 in a specific class, and after i finished one of them i got another one for when i reach level 40 in that class! one of them asked me to use the cheer command a shitload of time which was very boring but at least the reward was very good for once! one of them ask me to defeat metal slimes while affected by a skill which mean that i have to waste at least a turn triggering this skill, that's a really crappy request!

anyway for those wondering the plot is more akin to DQ7 where there are tons of subplots but i'm a little disappointed, every subplot so far as been like this
spoiler (click to show/hide)
NPC A: OH NPC B! WHY YOU ARE DEAD! WOE IS ME!
NPC B IN GHOST FORM: no! npc A! you must go on!
NPC A: yes NPC B you are right!

The alchemy is sooooooooooo much better than DQ8. You can now learn recipies by reading those bookshelves you always avoided in all the other DQ games. There's also an Alchemonicon (book) that keeps tabs on your Alchemy recipies and even shows you what you need, how many you have, etc.

Only problem is you can't seem to take the alchemy pot with you, it's at the 2nd town. Maybe you get a portable one later on.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: magus on July 10, 2010, 11:41:29 AM
recipe were found in bookshelf in DQ8 too!
if anything it is now impossible to guess anything since there are like 20 different ingredients and you might have guessed the ingredient correctly but not how many you need

anyway,i just discovered it's a good idea to wander around the world map,you find tons of alchemic ingredient if you explore a bit

i've got the ship and enix can never seems to get this right, suddenly battle are now random again and enemies party go up to 5 :yuck, seriously guys why you are so fixated that battle's on sea need tons of monster? they don't! it just makes those battle boring, especialy since you move slower on sea!

UPDATE: i spent the last 2 hours gathering material so i could finaly clear some entry in the alchemicon, the steal rate are ridiculous low and in some case you need a shitload of item (for example there is a whip that require's 3 of an item for the first upgrade,5 for the second and 6 for the last upgrade that's 14 item you need to fully upgrade it!) but to be fair it's not like the game is forcing me too so i can't really complain! anyway i also unlocked another job,the ranger who apparently use long range weapon and has a bunch of useless skills! meh

i also got my first treasure map,the enemy in there were the same weaksauce that was around normal dungeon but the boss completely obliterated me which is good because so far this game has been piss easy and there haven't been many reason to spend my skill points or upgrade my equipment

I'm up to the bit where you have to get your boat. I made my sexy bear character a Gladiator so he can use axes.

Abilities still suck shit. HOWEVER, Clerics can now cast Diviniation to see how much everyone needs for EXP. No more having to run to the Church!

Equipment is still uber expensive. Holy shit. Alchemy requires too much work.

Treasure Maps and Loot Dungeons are shit. I got my first one and tried it out. I got ZERO treasures and the boss promptly railed me with its thick nigra dick. I will never try another one again.

I still prefer DQ8
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: Himu on July 11, 2010, 10:20:13 PM
Oh my GOOOOOOOOOOOD this game is everything I wanted.

It takes the additions from DQ8 and enhances them while at the same time giving it a more oldschool DQ feel due to the inclusion of the bar/inn player recruitment system.

Right now I've got my main character as a minstrel because it's different for a DQ lead. I've got me a mage, a priest, and a warrior in my party. I think it covers most bases. And I'll be switching to thief later on.

As for my skill allocation, I don't know what I want to concentrate on. I put points into swords so I could learn Dragon Slayer or whatever, because I figured I need a sword skill asap, but as this point, I'm considering making my main only use fans and whips witch emphasis on minstrel skills. No swords for this minstrel! Right now I'm getting my party up to speed and I'm going to buy them some new equipment.

Only meh things so far:

- The boss battle theme. Kinda lacking for a DQ boss theme especially.
- The fact that monsters move while you've got the menu open wtf
- Also, sprites being mixed with real time sprites is totally weird.

The only things that are unique across skills are the Limit Break (i forgot the term offhand but, thats what they are) and the fourth skill tree (the ones that arent weapons). All knife skills are the same across jobs, etc.

As an example I cant find any difference between the Warrior and the Gladiator aside from the Gladiator allowing to use Axes, Hammers etc. and maybe a huge buff in strength.

Plus I'm so far into my current jobs theres no way I will bother changing any future jobs I get (which btw require distinguished mentally-challenged quests to earn. Like casting "Wizard Ward" before defeating a Metal Slime - WITH the person who casts Wizard Ward. REALLY?)

I have upwards to 30+ skill points because none of the skills are remotely appealing.

Also this game is littered with typos. "Acceleratle" - this isnt real is it?

And the bit with Lleviathan <- is that really 2 Ls? where they keep saying "youer" IT WAS SO AGGRIVATING

Alchemy requires too much work.
don't tell me,i'm OCD so i have like to alchemize everything,i think i've spent more time stealing ingredient from monsters than actualy playing the game :lol

i think a thief is absolutely necessary if you are going to bother with alchemy,75% of the thing you need for alchemy are drop which the monster won't drop so you have to steal them, some item are found around if you explore to map but then you have to wait for them to respawn, but if you have a thief you can just steal them without having to wait! i guess you could just switch to thief, learn steal and then switch back to your class of preference but it already takes a huuuuuuuuuuge amount of try trying to steal stuff as a high level thief,i can imagine it being only more painfull for other class if your stealing rate depends on your stat! sometime's you can even steal some nice equipment!

some alchemy item tough are pretty good,i just got a bo stick with 90 attack power and as soon as i get this rock something i can upgrade it to 100! i also made a similiar fire sword!

i also defeated the treasure map boss but all i got was another treasure map... that was lame!

Quote
(which btw require distinguished mentally-challenged quests to earn. Like casting "Wizard Ward" before defeating a Metal Slime - WITH the person who casts Wizard Ward. REALLY?)

have everyone cast wizard ward, problem solved!
i have been hunting metal slime and if you simply don't bother fighting the other chump enemy they aren't that hard to find

Quote
I have upwards to 30+ skill points because none of the skills are remotely appealing.
i'm keeping my point for strenght/defense/HP buff,so basicaly i only got the HP+30 strenght+10 from the gladiator... i found a bunch of quest that require me to have a proficency of 30 in a weapon so i'm almost tempted to aim at those

i'm really liking this one, since you get to keep your skill point, you do have an incentive to switch to other job but at the same time, there isn't a job which horribly outclass every other,it feels very balanced

also there was finaly a subplot that was different from the other! allelujah!

i've decided to teach steal to all my character,it probably isn't a wise skill point investment in term of fighting but it is in term of keeping my sanity! i just found an enemy which drop an item which let me synthetize around 4-5 new item... problem is i need 3 of it for every item!

anyway the other character don't suck as much as i would have tought, especialy the main hero who's a ministrel so if you don't want a thief,i guess teaching steal to your MC isn't a bad idea

Shortly after you power up the Starlight Express.

After some story (you gain Zoom here), you go back down and wind up at the Dharma Temple (it's called like, Alltrades Abbey or something distinguished mentally-challenged). Then you do MORE story (boss fight, etc.) THEN you can change classes.

It's pretty typical of the DS ones. Alliteration heavy, but thankfully the accents have been toned down compared to 4.

I just changed classes for the first time, Mr. Hawke. I made my Minstrel a thief because I want steal and stuff. I'm now level 5 (got to that level in like 5 minutes). I think I remember where metal slimes are. I fought some in the dungeon near Coffinwell. All I need is for my warrior to level up and get skill points because I need one point to get Metal Slash.

I'm also considering deleting my priest and mage because I don't like the way they look. I want a 100% dark skinned party. Yeah I said it.

edit: steal is probably "half-inch" in this? Can anyone confirm this?

you will love this, borys. it's not perfect, because of some silly additions, like making you go on distinguished mentally-challenged quests to unlock new classes but other than that, you probably won't find a better traditional rpg across ds, psp, 360, wii, or ps3 that's not a remake of some sort.

i think i'm getting somewhere near the end because the game has stopped feeding me subplot's and has instead decide to go with a single ultra-generic plot :smug

my party is around level 35,i FINALY found a piece of armor that's stronger that the john lennon garb i got from the ministrel quest so FINALY my hero doesn't look ridiculous! and uh... what else,i've fused tons of shit and it gets harder and harder to get ingredient,i've also tried the online shop and i bought a dangerous garment,it seems useless but i guess that was the only way to get it (the shop also sells alchemy ingredient so it can save you some work) i've also discovered there is a limit to quest you can take,so now i'm forced to solve some quest if i want to get new one in :-\

himu i told it to demi too, give wizard ward to everyone so it doesn't matter who give the final blow

The drop rates for the other items are pretty low, unfortunately. Typically 15% or 5% for the even rarer ones.
As you get higher level treasure maps, they get harder, you find some unique enemies that are not in any other areas, and you can get better items. Plus they have different bosses.

yea but how do i get better maps?
anyway one of my map has metal medley on them,so maybe i should abuse it so i can reach level 40 and solve the other job quest before tackling the final boss
oh by the way i couldn't find anyone giving me a warrior related quest, anyone know where it is?

i've found the warrior quest but at this point i would be happier if i didn't
the quest require me to score a critical hit on an enraged monster two times
this would be already an incredibly huge pain in the ass,if it asked to just score two critical hit but the monsters have to be enraged? i don't have the slighest clue how to make that happen! it usualy happens when another monster die because of a critical hit! is the game really asking me to do two critical hit in a row in the same battle twice?

Majority of the job quests are in Swinedimple. I got a sweet ass axe from the Gladiator quest, and a sweet whip which I alchemized to a stronger one from the whip one.

I played this ALL NIGHT and I made it to "Part 2" (when you collect all the Fyggs). Then I got killed bya fucking random mimic. I ragequit so hard.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: magus on July 14, 2010, 11:09:53 AM
you can steal mini medals from mimic so i see them as a blessing
anyway i did a few more treasure map and after 5 of them i finaly got a different boss! (tough still no loot)
he was pretty easy but he had tons of HP so he was somewhat annoying to kill, apparently i could steal panties from him but when i tried i got a fire claw instead an item i could make trough alchemy >:(

anyway i've been farming metal slime's so i can finaly get the level 40 job quest done and it's never been this easy to defeat them,as you can dodge other monster, you can simply skimp around until you find one and after you get one they are dead in a turn or two
(unless the metal king slimes are huge prick that's it)

also my cleric has finaly learned multiheal :rock

Huh? no one said metal slimes are hard. We were talking about a quest to get a class. You have to have a mage cast wizard ward, and the mage has to get the final hit. Since mages suck with melee compared to other classes, this is troublesome and tedious.

metal slimes are easier to kill in dq9 than in 8.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX

*groan* i'll say this for the third time since nobody seems to read me

THE MAGE DOES NOT HAVE TO DEAL THE KILLING BLOW
ANY CHARACTER WHO HAS LEARNED WIZARD WARD WILL DO IT
SWITCH EVERYBODY TO WIZARD JOB,HAVE EVERYBODY SPEND 8 POINT TO LEARN WIZARD WARD
SWITCH BACK TO OTHER PHYSICAL JOB
CAST WIZARD WARD WITH EVERYBODY AT THE START OF THE BATTLE
KILL THE METAL SLIME

that's all you need to do

I forget how good or bad a game looks after 5 minutes, I just don't care. The characters are something I miss, but DQ8 is the only DQ with such a focused cast to begin with. The world is only better in that it has larger scope, but it's arguable DQ9 has more to do. Also, no random battles, and despite the fact that there are no characters, the stories that revolve around each individual town (the vignettes) are probably better than the bulk of 8's.

Overall, I like it more than 8 and loved 8 to pieces.

Start off? You dont get to pick your starting job. You are a Minstrel until you get to the class temple.

Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: demi on July 15, 2010, 04:07:41 PM
You dont have to primarily be a thief. Just plop enough points and get the skill.

I didnt pick either Thief or Monk. I've been Minstrel / Wizard / Cleric / Warrior (now turned Gladiator) the entire game.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: AdmiralViscen on July 15, 2010, 04:09:07 PM
I was worried that being a Warrior would make equipment upgrading too grindy. But I guess the Minstrel is probably pretty inexpensive on his own right?
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: Himu on July 15, 2010, 04:10:10 PM
minstrel/priest/mage/warrior is a great starter party.

When you unlock class changes, make whoever you want into thief/martial artist so you can get some of their skills. I highly suggest you have each character take up martial artist in particular, so you can pool 16 points in the focus line of skills for psyche up. This lets every character psyche up and with minstrel's Egg On, you can get to 100 tension in only two turns as opposed to four.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: demi on July 15, 2010, 04:13:21 PM
Equipment is very expensive and usually offers minimal bonus. I often skip entire towns and not buy a single thing. I have 70000 Gold from not buying anything right now. I get my stuff from chests or alchemizing whenever I have the items necessary. My Cleric still has a Steel Shield because I dont feel its worth spending money on to upgrade.

- Only being able to go on DQVC once a day (The last set they gave me was ASS)
- Vague as fuck quest descriptions (or rather: More play on words bullshit)
- No Casino! Am I blind?
- Loot maps still suck shit

Finally made it to Dharma Temp... err I mean Alltrades Abbey.

Is there really no casino in the game? That's pretty surprising, and it sucks if true :(

No Casino OR Pachisi (which is way cooler than Casino)

You guys only like the casinos because you like getting imba items really early on.

Wow the cat boss is even worse.
the funny thing is that you have to refight the pig boss, the owl boss and the cat boss again later :lol

Except you can get "imba" items even earlier in this game thanks to abusing the Hoimi table and other methods
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: magus on July 17, 2010, 12:47:48 PM
other methods like what? even if you use the hoimi table to get rare drop there is no rare drop that break the game
this game is easy but there is no way to start with shit like the king metal sword or the king metal armor
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: demi on July 17, 2010, 12:58:00 PM
There are RNG methods out there for getting drops easier, useful towards Alchemy and making high level items
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: magus on July 17, 2010, 01:21:47 PM
i know that but what are you going to get with those rare drop to break the game? there is nothing on the same level of the casino item!
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX
Post by: magus on July 18, 2010, 04:22:20 AM
uh anyway... i was holding impression back for post game but since there isn't much to do other than wait for level 5 to release the extra stuff, grind myself silly for treasure maps (which are like the lame version of disgaea item world) and complete the post-game sidequest (some involve treasure maps) there isn't much to do

it's a pretty good rpg, battle are decently paced, there is a nice world map,and there is tons of shit to find... the game itself is pretty easy (or maybe i just involuntary grinded a lot trying to finish all the sidequest) the plot is basicaly DQ 7 cool subplots + DQ 4 lame-o ending,i liked the job system because there is no job that really sucks (maybe mage) but a lot of the skill you learn are lame and in fact i finished the whole game just with normal attacks and the occasional healing

and uh... that's about it,there is not much else to say, bring on 4 warrior of light next
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX

Post-Game is SHIT. WOWEE GRIND

I beat Godwyn just now. I grinded a whopping TWO levels and gave my Minstrel Falcon Slice and the Wizard learned Oomph. Now I just plop Oomph on the Minstrel and Gladiator and they both take off about 500 per turn. Buy Mirror Armor for this guy, it was hilarious how he kept firing at me and it just shot back at his face for 250+ damage.

Also I dont know why I didnt see the final boss a mile away but I'm a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow. I like how you gradually see the hole he blasted as you make your way down, that was a nice touch.

DQVC plopped a Miracle Sword up when I logged on at 4, which was funny. Course I don't need it now!

I think this is a really good DQ game, mainly for the fact that the jobs while there are completely unnecessary to beat the game. That's what I want. I want to grind, I want to buy equipment, and I want to beat bosses. I don't want to juggle shitty jobs for shitty skills. The story isn't offending, and the difficulty curve is really lienient (borderline casual). Almost DQ8 except no casino, shitty graphics, and poopy characters (no sexy Yangus).

8/10

Yeah the jobs switching this is distinguished mentally-challenged and the game is rediculously easy.  Had to restart because i wasted my early points.  I am waiting for the underwhelming ending now cuz of you guys :(  Atleast it wont hit like a ton of bricks now.

It's impossible to "waste" points.

Also the job switching is fine aside from how SLOW it is.

Once again: scrubs.

The game is pretty easy, I agree. I have not been wiped out once and I have 30 hours clocked. Of course, I've mostly been dabbling with the class system and classes for the past 10 hours, so I haven't even gotten my ship yet.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX

It is very well possible to waste points.

You can get enough points in the game to max every skill slot across every single class combined except two skills. So no, it's not.

after wandering at random like an idiot i solved a quest that gave me access to a boss that FINALY kicked my ass! they should have put it like right in the front instead of hidding it this way,for those curious the boss is....

I'm not interested in doing that, let alone with one class since the job system in this is poop. So I have wasted points.

I've been leveling Fans on my Minstrel because I remember hearing it was a good idea, but I"m thinking that's a waste.

I'd choose someone who uses Swords. You get an extremely good Sword minutes before the final boss. Falcon Slash is also extremely useful.

I went Minstrel Warrior Mage Priest

There really isn't any other class who uses fans so I think I will shift to Swords for the Minstrel. Warrior is already swords.

finally decided after many class changes that my main character will stay gladiator

mostly because I think dmg wise gladiator wins. the coup de grace skill is handy too, ive been doing 900+ish dmg with it

Change Warrior to Gladiator and that's how I roll (btw. Fans are lame)

@Viz, buy Mirror Armor you'll be surprised how often he'll throw fireballs at you and get it reflected back

right now i'm grinding everyone job so i can rack up skill points,i'm thinking of giving everyone mastery of paladin/gladiator and warrior so they get a 200 HP bonus which is pretty huge, then probably weapon masteries so i can finish the weapon mastery related quest

Why would you bother grinding? You beat the game, all that's left is to do stupid treasure maps and "legacy bosses". Just throw a infinite HP cheat, unlock all quests cheat, on and go nuts.
Title: Re: DRAGON QUEST IX

but i like grinding :)
it's not like i'm knocking myself out, just bringing every job to level 24,takes less than 5 liquid slimes

ohohohohohohohohoh :lol
i mastered every melee related job and now everyone of my single guys has around 400 hp,my warrior is close to 500,then i gave a weapon mastery to everyone,my damage output shoot trough the roof! i killed the uber boss in 9 turn! :lol

apparently everytime you kill him he get a little stronger and drops better stuff so i guess for once i have to grind the enemies instead of my party members :lol

EDIT: i've finaly unlocked the last job which involved killing a monster which is only found in the random maps,my character now looks like the bizarro godly version of willy wonka :smug
