Defense of the Ancients, Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends, and Demi-God. All these games play basically the same way but they each have very different mechanics. Unfortunately the community for all of these games is absolute shit. Even worse than Counter-Strike, if you can imagine. Even worse than Halo.
In any case, I bought Heroes of Newerth today (and I'm absolutely terrible at it) and have been playing League of Legends for a week or so now. Before I got back into the genre with League of Legends I played Defense of the Ancients and the beta for Heroes of Newerth. Do any EBers play these games? If you don't, you should check out League of Legends because it's free. It's a really good starting point for getting into the genre too because it's amazingly user friendly (I'm having difficulty getting back into HoN because the interface isn't as easy and helpful as LoL's).

HoN username = Powerslave.
I watch competitive HoN more than I play since I don't have any friends who play it and pub games are a pain in the ass. I actually like the game alot, but one: I suck at it and two: as you said, the community is awful.
-
So Powerslave is your joke account? SMH
-
Nah. I'm scared to use my RL name when playing HoN and I was listening to said album when I was signing up for my account. :P
-
Heads up: HoN is free to play this week.
-
I've been playing the shit out of League of Legends with some friends since it's free but hopefully I can convince them to buy Heroes of Newerth after playing it this week.

If anything, the raging 12 year olds in HoN will scare your friends off. :teehee
I've been playing alot of LoL too. My name is 'ScumbagBlues' so feel free to add me. :)

HoN, DotA, and LoL are essentially RTS with a focus on only one unit. Gameplay revolved around picking 5 characters to a team and trying to destroy your opponent's shrine which is on the other side of the map. There are towers that block your progress and you have to destroy the towers to access the shrine. It is far more complex, but that is the gist of it.
This is a good beginners guide that you can read (http://www.leagueoflegends.com/learn/new_user_guide)

LoL has a great community.

LoL's community isn't as bad as HoN's, but it isn't perfect either. I've still ran into my fair share of ragers and idiots.

Duke Nukem is doing voices for the Valve DotA (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/07/ooh-valves-mystery-dota-project-leakorised/). :omg

Real Talk: I bought that Chrome game off Steam just because Jon St. John voiced the main character.
