Title: In the market for a new monitor
Post by: fistfulofmetal on July 13, 2010, 01:43:41 PM
So just now my monitor died.
I'm using my tv right now and it's pretty decent but I would prefer a dedicated monitor.

here's some general specifications:
24inches
HP or Samsung probs
HDMI enabled
good for gaming
200-300 dollars

any recommendations would be appreciated. I had my old one for like 4 years and it did me good but sadly

thanks!

so your old one is only 4 years old?  seems pretty young but you have a way of fucking these things up.

I got a 22 inch HP monitor a couple of weeks ago for 120.  There was a 24 inch version for like 200 but that was beyond my needs.  that's all i've got.

Go with ASUS or Alienware.  ASUS is preferred by fighting game players at tournaments, as they are said to be virtually lag/ghosting free.  I have one and it's been perfect for gaming.  Alienware also just supplied monitors to the recent EVO 2010 championships.

this may be the one:

This is what I have: http://www.amazon.com/VK266H-26-Inch-1080P-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B001LYPITM/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1279045891&sr=1-3

They seem pretty much similar, except that mine is a couple of inches larger, has a webcam, and has component input (which sucks).

Like I said, it's been great...can't complain accept for the fact that mine is 16:10, which can make some console games look a little stretched.  (This was a gift to me so I wasn't fully aware of the details, or I would have opted for a slightly-smaller model)  One thing I never tried was hooking up my 360 to it with VGA cables -always used HDMI- but I think I read somewhere that with VGA you get an option for 16:9 with black bars?  Might have to try that.

PC monitors are 16:10 by default.

X360 VGA can give you 1680x1050 resolution option (16:10) with black bars to maintain aspect ratio.

This one has LED back-lighting which means better contrast and less power consumption.  It also has a built-in TV tuner so you can just plug in an antenna for HDTV broadcasts.

The overall image quality is not bad for its price.

Can the PS3 do 16:10 resolutions?

Is the difference between HDMI and VGA going to be noticeable?

I dunno, only tried it once and it was fine.
