Japanese PRIDE my Hello Kitty-loving brothers.  Name your top ten games (or series, so a single series doesn't dominate a list) that came from the Land of the Rising Fun. Please also include a brief explanation regarding the game plussssssssss why you love it so.  :-*

I can't really rank them.

Yoshi Island's: Great mechanic.  Gorgeous visuals.  Amazing level design

Link's Awakening: Best dungeons bar none.  Eagle Tower :bow2

Super Street Fighter II Turbo: the apex of 2D fighters.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Perfect blend of speed and platforming.

Final Fantasy VI: Easy as balls, but the ensemble cast, soundtrack, and amazing sprite work, the last of the series, make it my favorite.

Dragons Quest VIII: Epic Old School RPG with beautifully cell shaded graphics.

Resident Evil 2: Loved the dual scenario with secondary campaigns each.  I still remember that awesome Police Station theme.

Mega Man 2: Mega Man perfection.  Never duplicated

Super Metroid: I enjoyed the first game, but this just took it to the next level.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater: Big Boss and the James Bond 60s trapping really fit the series well.

2. Panzer Dragoon Saga: Perhaps the greatest fantasy RPG ever created.

Besides, my list doesn't have teh bias.  Some of those games have been ported or reiterated, albeit poorly, on other systems.    :patel

Okay, being serious:

1. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 - Kind of a no-brainer for me. I like scifi and I like Mario platformers. Presentation is great, action is light and fun, and it's got excellent music.

2. Star Ocean: The Second Story - One of my favorite RPGs, thanks to the scifi twist on the genre and the fun combat system. I also kind of like the characters too and it came before the big cutscene explosion.

3. Super Metroid - Moody exploration and great action-platforming. It's hard to ask for more.

4. ICO/Shadow of the Colossus - Surreal and beautiful. Maybe the gameplay isn't the greatest ever, but Team ICO's two titles made an impression on me with the way they were crafted and the way they both felt when I played them. Can't have a list of Japanese games without them.

5. Final Fantasy 7 - Yeah, it's FF7. Deal with it.

6. Persona 3 - An RPG dating sim that isn't completely creepy and condescending! It's a miracle!

7. Chrono Trigger - One of the greats of the RPG genre.

8. Super Smash Bros. series - I've poured countless hours into these three games, the multiplayer they offer is just so much fun.

9. Breath of Fire 3 and 4 - While not heavy-hitters like other PS1 RPGs, I really enjoyed the characters and settings of these two Capcom titles. It's a shame that the series is pretty much dead now.

10. Katamari Damacy - You roll stuff up into a giant ball and it's fun!

Notice a pattern? Anyway, the order's probably not quite right and I think I've overlooked a few games, but whatever.

Dunno but cool to see lists with Phantasy Star 2, 4 and Star Ocean 2 on it...

Favorite game series would be the Phantasy Star, Dragon Quest, Mario, Ys, and Mega Man (OG) series

Dragon Quest, I've liked a lot of the games, just not enough to put it in my top ten.  Ditto with Final Fantasy.  As much as I liked VI and VIII, I've just moved on from that series.  XIII just looked embarrassing to me.

Dragon Quest IX is a new standard for portable rpgs, ichi. Every DQ I've played aside from 7, I can't put down until I've beaten it. And I've got a long history with Final Fantasy. Quite honestly there are few entries I love now.

Beautiful Katamari on the 360 was the epitome of DLC rapeage. Katamari Tribute/Forever on the PS3 has no DLC because of the backlash from BK.

Final Fantasy XII - Hunts, gambits, awesome environs, awesome gameplay.
(Also VII, VIII, IX and XIII are somewhere up here - never finished VI)

Metal Gear Solid - Blew my mind when I first played it. All subsequent MGS games are loved by default.

Super Metroid and GC's Metroid Prime - the only Metroid games I've finished. Both amazing.

Ico/SotC - Strange and atmospheric I've always found these games really immersive and beautiful.

Zelda WW - The quintessential Zelda, nails the sense of exploration for me.

Okami - Awesome game, awesome graphics. Better than nearly every Zelda.

Tombi (Tomba) -  RIP Whoopee Camp, Tombi 1 and 2 are amazing adventure games.

Mario Games (1 - 3, World 2 (Yoshi's island) and SMG2) - fun times.

After Burner - Use to love the arcade game, love the remake on XBL. No other arcade game is as satisfyingly fast and insane.

Bayonetta - 7 foot weirdly sexy goth bitch fighting angels with the most fast paced, fluid battle system I've ever played... Amazing.
----------------

Also Resi 1 and 4, Valkyria Chronicles, Super Smash Bros and Rez come in close. Probably left something I liked out.

I have the two PS2 ones and the PSP one as well.  The 360 one was included in the bundle I bought, but I haven't even bothered to put it in my machine due to the ridiculous amounts of DLC I'd have to buy to unlock everything.

I have DQVIII, just haven't gotten around to it.  It's part of my huge backlog.

Ico  - I much prefer Ico to SotC. SotC is still cool and all, but Ico is a lot more fun. Also Ico was one of the first games I played on PS2 so I guess there are bonus nostalgia points for that shit.

Viewtiful Joe -  Awesome concept, fully realized within the first game. Fuck the series. Kamiya purity! :rock

Street Fighter - 3s is probably my most played game evar and for two years I didn't even have anyone to play with. Shit's too good. SSF4, Alpha2 and ST are cool too.

Virtua Fighter - My first arcade cabinet was a VF1 machine and it was godly. cost aprox. $2 per game, but we tore the coin collector open and played that shit for days. VF4evo has a godly single player and probably the best training mode any fighting game will ever have.

Earthbound/Mother3 - Great rpgs that, while mechanically simple, are so well made in every aspect that it's impossible to hate. Love the music, art style, animations, writing, etc.

Actraiser - Greatest blend of side scrolling ass-kicking and sim city god mode. One of the best IPs that is left in the dust.

Terranigma -  Again, Quintet made some fucking awesome games. Remember shitting myself when usurping all the towers was revealed to be just the first act.

Katamari Damacy - Rolling shit up. All happy happy sugoi like. rainbows and cows 'n shit.

Shin Megami Tensei - really streamlined and fun combat system and the lovable grind of collecting 'em all. usually accompanied by great art and music.

Demon's Souls - Felt totally fresh and fully realized on it's first iteration. The meat and potatoes art style and the lack of flashy animations and effects coupled with the slow, meticulous nature of the game-play was so amazing. Also loved how they didn't blast you with story and just gave you some baseline stuff and you could focus on what was actually important; invading bitches and fucking fools up.

The camera controls are a bit wonky by today's standards and the momentum based movement might feel a bit off since it was refined a lot in SotC, but other than that it has aged very well. Some people don't like the way it looks, but I think the art style and the clever use of effects carry it nicely.

Other complaints include rudimentary combat (not an issue, since the enemies all bum-rush you or run away, making it easy to whack them) and the game being too artsy fartsy. If you can deal with the artsy fartsy you should be in for a treat.

I can do artsy I guess, but Ive been trolling the game for years without actually having played it. So Im probably just gonna complain the whole time through the game anyway!

Seriously though, I just read a review and it does sound pretty cool.

However, I'll never forget a "best game covers" thread on GAF with 2 million whining fanboys pooping their Sony brand diapers over the fact that the NA cover art is ugly and the Euro/Jap version was "artistic and beautiful"

Sceneman, the game is like eight hours long at most, even if you just think it's average, you won't be suffering it for long and you'll have new ammo to trash it.  :lol

Or you'll end up loving it.  I thought it was a very good game, though I think it gets a bit overhyped these days.

Earthbound's writing is well done for a jrpg coming out of the nineties. I'm sorry I held a game released this year, that was praised for it's dialog to a higher standard.  Earthbound is also not over-indulgent in it's writing like most jrpgs tend to be. If I had put Xenosaga or some such shit you could have worked that angle, but alas.

Zelda - it's just the best
Mario - 2D, 3D, kart, rpg, everything
Smash Bros. - got me interested in fighters
Street Fighter - no fighting game can compare
Metal Gear Solid - I just love these games, still haven't played 4
3D Ninja Gaiden - best action games, only Bayonetta can compare
Grandia - best battle system ever
Megaman X games - first 3 are still probably my fav action platformers and I think they're the first games I played through that really required skill to progress
Secret of Mana - first rpg I liked and still my favorite arpg
Phantasy Star 4 - favorite 16 bit turnbased rpg

There's a lot more. I really wanted to add Advance Wars and Fire Emblem...

1. Ninja Gaiden - From the NES games to the Xbox games, this has always been my favorite series. I love everything about them: the ninjas, the difficulty, the combat depth, and the tits. Ninja Gaiden Black set a new standard for action games, and as far as overall package goes, it has yet to be surpassed. It's a perfect game. Then Ninja Gaiden 2 came out, and its combat system blew everything else out of the water. It's completely unrivaled. The change in level design, from a pseudo-open-world to tight, linear stages, with no puzzles to get in the way and little platforming is what action games should be. Unfortunately, the game was rushed out the door and it's flawed in many areas. Most notably the unstable framerate and the completely broken scoring system. But it's still the best action game this generation.

2. Street Fighter - Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter 3: 3S, Super Street Fighter 4. Amazing games. The pinnacle of 2D fighting games, in my opinion. I love the near-limitless depth of the series. Even after playing for thousands of hours, there is always something new to learn. Then there is just something basic that makes me love fighting games in general: the fast paced matches. It's a perfect blend of strategy, mind-games, and skill.

3. Virtua Fighter - Basically everything I said about Street Fighter can be applied here. The king of 3D fighters by a landslide.

4. Shin Megami Tensei - Nocturne, DDS, Devil Survivor, Persona, etc. I enjoyed pretty much everything I've played in this series. The stories here are basically the only genuinely good ones in RPGs, the turn-based combat (Nocturne, in particular) is the best there is, the art is fantastic, the music is unmatched. What's not to love?

5. Fire Pro Wrestling - The best wrestling series of all time. Period. They are just absolutely excellent games from top to bottom. Great gameplay systems, UNBELIEVABLE customization, MASSIVE roster. I'd kill for a Fire Pro HD with GGPO-quality netcode. I'd trade nearly every game I own for it.

6. Devil May Cry - A different breed of action game, where the focus is not on vicious enemies, but on stylish combos. A perfect alternative to Ninja Gaiden.

7. Demon's Souls - This game stands head-and-shoulders above nearly everything else this generation. Everything about it is basically in a league of its own: from the excellent combat and controls, the art, the music, the level design, the one-of-a-kind online play, the endless replay value, and maybe my favorite thing about it: the complete lack of hand-holding. The further we get into this generation, the wimpier developers have become. Demon's Souls is not afraid to punish you for playing stupidly. Die? Replay the entire damn level. Die again? Say goodbye to all the souls you've gathered. I'm glad to see there's still an HD developer with balls.

8. Ouendan / Elite Beat Agents - It took me a while to warm up to this series, but once I did they quickly became my favorite music games of all time. I'm not sure what to add here since everything about it is awesome. I guess my only complaint with the series is I wish they would let you play the higher difficulties from the start, since the regular ones are a snoozefest.

9. Pokemon - The competitive aspect of this series is what really draws me in. Basically, the game really begins once you finish the 30 hour long tutorial known as the story. From there, it's time to plan which team you want to build, go and find the pokemon you want, breed them to get a good nature and IVs (this part sucks), and finally train them against specific enemies for optimum stat growth. Then it's time for multiplayer battling, and this is where the game really shines. With nearly 500 Pokemon, the amount of strategies and tactics available to the player is staggering.

10. Dodonpachi - I wanted to choose one shooter for this list, but I wasn't sure which one. So I'll have to go with the Donpachi series, even though I haven't played the latest entries (DDP DOJ BLEX and DDP DFK). I can't say I like the chaining system either, but I can overlook that for everything else the games offer. Namely, the great bullet patterns, strict challenge, great music, and good art design. One of my goals is to 1CC Dai Ou Jou one day, but goddamn that game is hard.

11. Steel Battalion - I love the complexity of this series. The big beefy controller, the awesome mechs (er, "Vertical Tanks"), and with SB: LoC, the persistent online war. Playing Line of Contact online in big 10 player matches on a giant map, where every death MATTERED is a gaming experience I will never forget.

Order is not important here

0.The Last Remnant
1.Bayonetta
2.Ninja Gaiden
3.Bayonetta
4.Ninja Gaiden
5.Bayonetta
6.Ninja Gaiden
7.Bayonetta
8.Ninja Gaiden
9.Bayonetta
10.Ninja Gaiden

That pretty much sums what i want from Japan.

Sceneman, the game is like eight hours long at most, even if you just think it's average, you won't be suffering it for long and you'll have new ammo to trash it.  :lol

.

Play iiiiiit! It is really short and compared to the ancient trash that is Phantasy Star II you've been playing it will be like a fuckin godsent holy grail of awesome.

Why is Phantasy Star so good? I've never played phantasy star game. I;m a pathetic nublet when it comes to jrpgs, I've played quite a few but don't think i've ever finished any turn based jrpgs outside of FF :lol (Nearly finished Lost Odyssey but got bored, now I'm playing ToV and it seems promising as something I might finish). I watched Sceneman play Phantasy Star II though and it looked like poop. If I was going to go that oldschool I'd rather play something cool like nethack.

The OG Phantasy Stars (the ones on the Master System and Genny) were really great RPGs that did shit wayyyy beyond what Square was doing back in the day.  Phantasy Star II's super downer ending is kind of infamous amongst JRPG aficionados.

Yup, technologically, they were leaps and bounds ahead of any comparable RPG. The original Phantasy Star had animated monster attacks, something the FF games didn't have till FF7 (1997) and the DQ games didn't have till DQ6 (1995), not to mention impressive smooth pseudo 3D dungeons and full anime portraits in cinemas. The games had lots of nonlinearity, and huuuuuge dungeons filled with twists and traps (not everyone likes these aspects though, as it made the games very frustrating for people used to super linear RPGs of recent days). And of course the stories were ahead of their time, filled with lots of depressing twists and a world that carries over from game to game, with thousands of years of lore.

NetHack with movies in between each dungeon level, showing epically detailed and overblown magic effects and dramatic tableau where the ASCII characters interact with each other, emote, brood, and kill each other would be better than Final Fantasy. Real talk.

I remember playing Phantasy Star IV and my jaw dropping at all the cut scenes during story sequences.  Later on I read PSIV was supposed to be a Sega CD game and those cut scenes would have been ANIMATED which would have been even crazier.

That reminds me...Sega CD...LUNAR series.  I love the LUNAR games, especially the Sega CD versions.  So amazing.

He only mentioned Last Remnant one on his list, though, so if you add up the other ones cumulatively, it's the one he wants least. :teehee

Too bad Ninja Gaiden is basically dead without Itagaki at the helm. And on top of that Capcom doesn't seem to give a fuck about DMC any more either. Itagaki went on to create some westernized trash and Hideaki Itsuno was last credited in Bionic Commando 2009 :yuck. I guess Kamiya is the last hope for the genre.

Sigma 2 proved Hayashi doesn't know what the fuck he's doing.
