Are you guys feeling the new open Oblivion-type movement or the old school Japanese design?
-
I like Western, turn-based, isometric style. Icewind Dale 2, TOEE and even the clunky Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.
-
I dunno. Modern RPG's (FFX, FFXII, DQ8) have a Japanese design to them, do they not? They're not old school, but they aren't completely westernized, either.
-
I just got into RPGs, and I haven't played Oblivion yet. But I really like the ATB or whatever system in FFIV. One of my favorite games ever, and the only RPG I've ever played for more than 2 hours (not counting Pokemon).
-
Yeah, please don't count Pokemon.
-
I've never been into JRPGs because they're too restricting. There's a few that I've played and loved like Skies of Arcadia but they're the exception, not the rule.
For that reason alone, I think that's why I prefer western RPGs like Fallout.
-
:lol
It's one of those genres I never payed attention too, mainly because of the idea of turn based combat. I was a child of Mario, Sonic, and Link; to me, RPGs were just electronic chess games people played in communist countries. But then last year I played FFIV and was blown away. The battle system is fast, and it allows some strategy. The characters are amazing, and I felt connected to them. Very few games make me care about the characters, but with FFIV I actually yelled out "Edward, no!" when he 'died'. :lol

Old-school Western. Give me a fantasy-themed spreadsheet and grid- or hex-based combat ANY day.

Now that I know Shadow is in the cool Skies of Arcadia fanclub, what about you, Senor Drinky? Do you fly with the sky pirates or does your hardline hate for Sega extend to even good games?
-
Sega sucks. The Saturn took my childhood
-
My hardline hate for Sega? I *used* to be one of THE Sega fanboys back in the USENET days.
And yes, I :heartbeat Skies of Arcadia.
-
USENET days? What, did you log on your computer with a punch card too?
... Skies of Arcadia rocks. Where the fuck is my sequel?
-
I don't play too many RPGs anymore, but I'd have to say I enjoy Bioware's the most. So modern, I guess. Loved Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR. I'll definitely be buying Mass Effect when it's released.
-
KOTOR was the best Star Wars movie never made.

I couldn't stop thinking that the whole time I was playing it. I HATE the prequels, but loved everything about KOTOR.
-
Western RPGs for the win. Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape, NWN. . . Of course, I can appreciate a good Jappy rpg, too. DQ8 was amazing, and I have fond places in my heart for various FF titles.
And Vagrant Story, but just because the main char was named after me. That game was actually hard and tedious.

If George Lucas had any dignity left in his short furry body, he would have fallen on his sword after KotOR came out. A game company bitch-slapped his Burger King napkin script.
-
JRPGS, but I love western RPGs done right nearly just as well, something that Oblivion wasn't IMO
Might and Magic VI was much better
-
Might and Magic looks like something I'd be ashamed to play.

What was you username? I want to google some of your posts. :)
I used to troll Nintendo fans back on Fidonet (a collection of BBS message boards). Ahhh good times.

I've always hated FP RPGS. From Ultima Underworld to Morrowind to Gothic to Oblivion. It just doesn't grab me like the others do. The only ones I liked were Dues Ex, Arx Fatalis and Kings Field II.
-
I still enjoy a nice JRPG from time to time but nothing beats a game like Oblivion.
Dark Messiah of M&M is going to own.
-
JRPGs, but the love is fading as I am relating less and less to the stories and characters
-
Bobby, we call that growing up and getting a life. It's a good thing.
-
the market is just flooded with tons of JRPGs since the success of Final Fantasy VII, they aren't scarce anymore since publishers see it as a way to make money and develop an assiduous customer fanbase willing to pony up money for strategy guides and a string of sequels -- you just got to cherry pick the good and it doesn't mean that it's a bad genre just because there's a lot of redundant or crappy content, it's like all other genres that become successful -- when Quake hit on a fuckton of worthless 3D shooting copycats appeared, same thing for Warcraft II, Sonic, Grand Theft Auto 3, etc etc...
-
Diablo > you.
That's all I have to say.
-
If I'm going to play a game for it's story I'm going to take one with decent dialogue. That's why I can't stop playing Oblivion.
