It's launching tomorrow, for free, on Steam.

Why is it free? What's Valve's plan? Maybe the base game is free but updates cost money?

:rofl

spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's free because that's how Valve rolls.

Valve's been doing just that for years. A brand new, completely free, update for Team Fortress 2's engineer class was released just about a week ago, to go along with the steady stream of updates for all the other classes since the game first came out.

They're releasing it along with a new Source SDK, so they're probably trying to increase support for the Source engine.

And this isn't some huge game that they've spent years working on, it's an update of a Unreal Tournament 2004 mod that's done by the crew who created the original [and who are now employed at Valve].

i'll grab it because it's free, but it honestly looks like a half-dozen similar games that are already on steam

Yeah but the trick there is you get addicted to Team Fortress 2 (Ive put in 825.9 hrs) and are probably likely to buy shit off steam.

That's 800 hours you aren't playing something else though. If anything you're just going to pay $20 for TF2 and not buy anything else because they support it so well.

true, and i don't own any of those other games so this will fill that particular void

I'm ready.

@ Green Man: apparently (i may have misread this), Alien Swarm was a UT2K4 mod. I think that's why it's free.

It will get non-STEAM users to download the client and try the game, then look around and see what else they offer.

Why the surprise? Giving away Portal was a much bigger deal. Steam is an advertising and sales monster, anyone who installs it should know that it's a money pit of terrible proportions.

And it's been redone for source. It looks like it could easily be a $20 game. I just cannot believe a company would just give a game away for free without a catch involved.

I think Good Sir nailed it:

I really wonder what PC owner who has ANY interest in games at ALL doesn't already have Steam downloaded.
Title: Re: Who's ready for some ALIEN SWARM?
Post by: cool breeze on July 19, 2010, 11:01:11 AM
so this game is actually developed by Valve and it's an updated version of an unreal tournament mod? I assume the group that made that mod came to Valve.

ok, I was wondering why I thought this game already came out, then I realized I confused it for Alien Breed: Impact.  Both games look identical.

There are some crazies who think that Steam is a trojan program and that games requiring Steamworks are the worst thing ever.

Well, I can't see those people downloading Steam for ALIEN SWARM then.

Not wanting steam isn't that strange.  It is one of those things where if you're into it, it consistently rewards you.  Take steamworks as drm.  If I'm a steam user and still want the Fallout New Vegas collectors edition, I can go out and buy that package and still have most of the benefits that come with a digitally distributed game.  In addition to linking the game to your steam account, you get achievements, friends list integration, auto-updates, etc.  But if you're not into steam, it means that you need to install a program and keep it open while you play that game.  I'd imagine it is similar to my problem of buying an apple device and getting stuck with using itunes trash.

Yeah, that was me until Portal was free on Mac, and now on PC so I can get this.

Then I bought Torchlight for Mac. Next, I'll buy Team Fortress 2 next time it's part of a bundle.

Joe, Borys, and this other dude all died on me THREE times before the end. I had to do the elevator in the first level, the last little jog on the level where the ship illuminates the walkway, AND the last bit of the level where you have to wait about a minute for this door to open. And all three times I WON. On HARD.

Can't touch this. :smug

tesla is overpowered if anything

takes forever to run out of ammo
can hit two enemies at once
it autoaims
pretty sure theres no friendly fire with it

only negative is the short range

pretty sure theres no friendly fire with it

This is correct.

Also, it's absolutely vital for speed runs.

Valve just heavily nerfed the Tesla Gun. Now it's worthless.

BTW, finally got to the maximum level, Lv. 27 + 3 Promotions. Woo! Still haven't got all the achievements though, the last ones are hard.
