Title: LTTP: The Witcher

SO, heard it was good. It was on sale for $15 at GameStop this past week.

I'm patching and installing right now. Will it be any good? Will I regret my purchase? It looked BioWareish (uses one of their game engines) so I hope not.

some girl asked me if she wanted to bang. told me to get a bottle of wine and meet her at the old mill after midnight. so i got the bottle of wine then went to the mill after midnight but it was locked. so i went to do other stuff and went a crypt and she was in there and ended up dying?

It's a bit Bioware-ish: somewhat janky combat, third-person view, elements of choice, some differing dialog options, and so on. I wouldn't put it against Bioware's best though, but I don't think you'll regret your purchase at all.

Also, you get to sex up a bunch of hot ladies, so can't go wrong there.

playing it now, got it through the steam sale (4.99 i think), i'm liking it alot.

Bad game, awesome story.  Still worth playing, imo.  The Witcher 2 looks like it will have non shitty combat.

Does it offer real choice, in terms of different endings? If so, do they just call one of them "canon" and move forward with that in the sequel?

I think there's only one ending, but the choices you make do have an impact on events later in the game.

There are like three endings. Honestly though the choices are more important and substantial as you play the game rather than in the final endings per se.

I'm not sure how anybody knows how the sequel will handle the choices you made in the game for the most part. My expectations are actually kinda low on that front but we'll see. Even things like Mass Effect that make a really big deal about it don't handle it great. There will be an import save feature for the witcher but I'm not sure how truly important it will be.

I put about 12 hours into it back about a year ago, but never got around to finishing it. I think I'm going to fire up my save game and jump back in.

Once I finish Rudra's Treasure and Bayonetta, I'm on to this game... so hopefully sometime mid-August. I only installed the game on my comp and played a bit of the first mission to make sure everything worked fine, didn't seem too bad though.

Really, really LTTP: Finishing The Witcher

My earliest save game is from December 2008. It's now April 2011 and I'm still not finished. BUT, I am getting closer. Right now I'm...maybe halfway through chapter IV. I figured I was getting pretty close to the end ages ago, but it turns out that I'm still at least a few hours away from finishing up this latest chapter and there's still chapter 5 and the epilogue to plow through before I'm ready for The Witcher 2.

Of everything I've played so far, I really like the setting of chapter IV the most. It's a nice change from the dingy and poor Vizima and it's outlying swamplands.

Also, since I didn't want to bump two threads about the original The Witcher: lol @ at everyone acting all smug because The Witcher was supposed to be getting a console port. Just wait another year or two, guys, it's coming. :smug

It is based on a series of short stories and novels, yes, but I'm not sure how closely it follows their plot.

Yeah, chapter 4 was awesome, some really nice scenery and it cool change in terms of story - less kings and elves (well, until the end of the chapter) and more fantastical elements. I hope Witcher 2 has some more settings like this in the game.

I finally beat it today. There's no in-game clock, so I can only guess how long I played, but I'd be surprised if it was less than 40 hours. Probably 50.

This is a good game, bordering on a great game. It's packed with content, has some interesting characters and plotlines throughout its length, and has a combat system that is deceptively deep. It also beats Dragon Age at the "making a fantasy setting with elves and dwarves that isn't painfully derivative and boring", by dealing with the dark side of fantasy [race wars, poverty, magical experiments gone horrible wrong, and the madness spread by the delusions of men in high places] and wallowing in the filth and mire of the Middle Ages that inspired what we consider to be modern fantasy. Despite your best efforts, not everyone gets a happy ending.

The cutscenes are stiff and awkward, the voice acting is often flat, and the dialog animations are repetitive and sometimes inexplicable, yet it somehow managed to pull me completely into the world and provide me with a story that I actually wanted to see the conclusion to. In part this is thanks to the locals, which are varied and range from rank sewers to poverty-stricken slums to idyllic rural towns, which you will soon become quite familiar with thanks to constantly traversing them from one quest to the other. And speaking of quests, there are hundreds here. Long main quests with winding stories and side quests that deal with everything from being the town's dog catcher to delving into the lore of this world. Anyone who loves doing quests in RPGs will certainly find plenty here.

The game does sometimes get a bit squirrelly with the combat, throwing fights at you that are downright brutal and having you fight through swarms of annoying enemies that just love to hit you with Stun spells. There's also the issue of "Pain" a status effect that enemies through the last couple of chapters bring out in full force, a status effect which totally paralyzes your character for about five seconds as the enemies surround you and wail on you. More than once I want to grab my monitor and smash it against the floor. Combat is a problem in the last chapter and epilogue and you do little but fight for around 4-5 hours straight, making it become tedious. Yet the depth of the combat does still shine through despite, giving you two different weapons [for humans and nonhumans] with three different fighting styles, along with many other side-weapons that can be useful for certain situations, as well as five different spells that are quite necessary, and a slew of potions and compounds that can give you the edge you need in any number of battles. They could have simple gone the route of some many other Euro RPGs and simple handed you a cookie-cutter action-RPG combat system, but that didn't. It doesn't always work, but I like that it's something different.

It's got its faults and has a number of areas that definitely could have been improved upon, but that doesn't stop it from being the best Euro RPG I've played and one of my favorite RPGs of all time.

In other words: imma got hype for Witcher 2.

Sorry but I really hated that game and the forum hype behind it. On a serious note, the witcher was leagues beyond risen for my tastes.

I'm not a fan of euro-jank rpgs in general but the Witcher flaws and all was better than the other euro-rpgs I've forced myself to try in comparison.

I did enjoy Risen, though the combat definitely left something to be desired, and The Witcher blows it totally out of the water. Not even close.

Haven't had a game where it made me completely sit down and rethink what I just played. It's definitely going to be one of those RPGs that I want to replay down the road.

Yeah, that part was really good, definitely puts things in a different light. Also, the final talk with the King of the Wild Hunt. He was pretty much right, but I still whipped him nine ways to Sunday anyhow.

I think I've posted this multiples times in the witcher threads that have come up over here but what I liked was how they handled choice in this game.

First its delayed before you see the consequences. So you are far less tempted to do that thing where you make one decision and then reload to see the other decision in other rpgs and see which one benefits you best.

Second the shades of grey thing is handled so much better than in bioware rpg's. Many of the decisions are truly shades of grey in this game rather than what passes for them in typical bioware titles. 

That is the #1 reason I'm looking forward to the sequel. To see more of that.

btw, does anyone know if Witcher 2 will have achievements on steam?

If it has achievements I'd rather have the steam one, even with DRM; achievements make rpgs a lot more fun for me.  If not I'll get it from GoG.

i've tried to play the witcher over 4 different computers and could never get it to run well. maybe on this new one it will but im too lazy to install the DVD and then download that huge ass patch  :lol
