It's only fitting he'd have a birthday the same month Christopher Nolan released a film that surpasses his filmography.

RIP

Real talk: Only like two of his films. The rest are just bits and pieces that I like stuck in overrated flicks.

What 2?

Probably wouldn't be tough to guess. I appreciate the man's technique, but I don't like the majority of his work. Boring, long or muddled. Take your pick. One film is all three!

Full Metal Jacket is a perfect example of why I'm not a Kubrick fan. The bit Eel posted is great, but the film as a whole is not. I have this problem with most of his work.

Second half of FMJ is *different*. Doesn't mean it blows. Great movie. Better than Platoon and Apocalypse Now. Never understood the "second half blows" crap. Both halves are complimentary.

the part where theyre actually in battle is very short and disappointing

i hate the part where they make a big deal of finishing off that "sniper", she just killed one of your freinds, put that bitch down already

I watched a bit of The Shining a couple of days with the camera work Kubrick employed for some of the longer takes in mind. Its absolutely masterful and its one of the first times I've enjoyed a movie at its base level as a regular movie watcher and on a technical level. I was never that big into cinema but Kubrick's work has got me intrigued and interested to move beyond just letting myself be entertained.

I don't give a fuck about your list.

When I argue, I give an opinion on why I feel that way. Don't care to list.

This.

Also the idea that other great works make another great work less good is silly.

The only haters btw are internet revisionist dweebs who aren't worth paying attention to in the first place.

The dude was a genius on a technical level. There's no doubt. I just don't think he made a lot of completely entertaining films, certainly not consistently. But two of his flicks have a permanent spot in my library, because I love 'em. That's more than I can say for Godard (another landmark filmmaker that I can appreciate on one level, but whose work I do not enjoy).
