Title: Guitar building school in Phoenix, AZ for 5 months.
Post by: Tauntaun on July 27, 2010, 02:43:41 PM
Hey urrrybody, I'll be in Phoenix, AZ for 5 months starting at the end of August (19th) through the end of January (28th).  I'm going to this guitar/amp building school http://www.roberto-venn.com/ (http://www.roberto-venn.com/) and will be building at least one electric guitar, one acoustic, a combo tube amp and an effects pedal.  :hyper  :rock

Really looking forward to what I'm going to learn there and where this will possibly take me in life.  I'm hoping to have a blog to keep friends and family updated to what's happening.  We'll see if this happens as I can be lazy with that kind of thing. :teehee

So this brings me to this point, where my west coast nukkas at?  Who can I dumpster rape visit while I'm in AZ?  :hump  I'm hoping to visit LA once or twice so a meet up would be cool.  :)

Nobody lives in AZ, enjoy your horrible weather conditions and mexicans wanting to hide in your closet before they get deported.

That's part of my plan to not have to cook/clean since my wife won't be there.  Huahuahua. :smug

I've watched some show on PBS that showcased the building of Violins. The creating an instrument from a block of wood thing seems like something amazing to do. Have fun, mang!

So your marriage is over?

No we're just going to be apart for 5 months (except for 2 weeks when I visit for Christmas) and then back to normal.  She's applying for JET this September too so we might be moving to Japan next fall, we'll see.  Lot's of stuff going on.   :)

Just make sure the input jack is in between 2 buttcheek-shaped humps and we'll be good.

KICK ASS.  Soon you'll be taking some other company's amps, removing some knobs to make the sound more "pure", and charging triple the price for it.

For a job, not sure whether it's to work for a company or start one of my own.

Hey, that's kind of cool. What kind of electric guitar are you thinking of building?
Title: Re: Guitar building school in Phoenix, AZ for 5 months.
Post by: Tauntaun on July 28, 2010, 09:40:05 AM
My first electric (I'm hoping to build two) will be a PRS rip off I think because I don't have a guitar like that right now, I just have some shred guitars.  Mahogany body, quilted maple top, ebony fretboard, maple or mahogany neck (unfinished/bolt on), fixed bridge, string through body and locking tuners. I want a nice warm fat sound.  My biggest dilemma will be what pickups to use, have to do some research/experimentation there.

For my second electric, if I get to build one (decided by the instructors), I want to make a 'X' body shape like a Jackson Warrior or Ibanez Xiphos.  This will have a super slim maple neck (unfinished/maybe neck through), ebony fretboard, floyd rose original trem, cream binding, emg 81/85 and mahogany body.

Great idea building a PRS-type thing, no point building what you already have.  I've been dreaming about something fixed bridge/mahogony/maybe even single coils, just to go totally different to what I always play.  Like an Ibanez Paul Gilbert Fireman or something.

I played a Suhr Pro-series S5 a few months ago and was frankly blown away by the pickups - fantastic definition and tons of response in all frequencies.  They might be worth adding to your experiments.  Never really been blown away by pickups before, I just work with whatever is in there.  I think they were Suhr SSH+ and SSV humbuckers.  A friend put a pair of Suhr Doug Aldrich humbuckers in his brand new Warrior guitar (which is mahogany) because he was blown away as well.  They sound fantastic also, just higher output pretty much.

Fixed bridge would also mean easy detuning for some Hevy Devy riffing or the like. :rock

Yeah fixed bridges are just soooooooooooo much less complicated than Floyds.  I mostly use Floyds because other fixed bridge guitars that I've had will go out of tune because I pick hard and not so much because I want the whammy.  Oh man, changing strings/tunings on a floyd, woof.   :yuck

I've never heard of Suhr pickups (or guitars) before but I'm interested.  I'll check out some youtube and see if they have any sound clips.  :D

While I'd heard of Suhr guitars, I didn't know they make pickups either, so I thought I'd mention it.  Not exactly the first company you think of when you think pickups...

I played my friend's fixed bridge guitar just last weekend and stuffed about with all sorts of tunings.  Great fun compared to my norm.
