First he made an all-time classic in American Graffiti. Then he made the cultural touchstone for a generation. And now he's giving away half his money.

All while you sit on your couch getting fat!
-
I'd give away half my net worth, but no one would pay my bills. :(
-
maybe he'll buy me an ipad
-
i wonder how much money he has stored in that pouch on his neck
-
To be fair, it's only right that he give back what he stole

He has my fond memories of Star Wars?
-
Its the least he can do.

Will he "donate" me the money I paid to see Episode 3?

I used to toss all my figures and guns into a shopping bag and ride across town to a friend's place. One time, I wiped out badly, bag ripping open and scattering figures and guns everywhere. I had that part of the bike path locked down like a crime scene for an hour or so while I scoured the area for all those tiny fucking guns.
-
i was so paranoid about losing those guns that i kept them altogether in a little cloth drawstring bag
and then i lost the whole bag :(
and then someone's mom telling me there were too many toy guns in the world anyway or some such bullshit and even at that tender age i wanted to kill her
-
her last words as you choke the life from her chubby neck would have been "see? >urk< I was......right! >gasp choke<"
-
I buried a Han Solo figure in my yard, and then the next day it snowed really hard and I forgot where I buried it. Like a year later, my childhood dog dug the fucker up and brought it to me.

He makes shitty movies but everything I have seen shows him to be a solid great upstanding guy. He has donated tons of money to a bunch of educational stuff before too.
-
I never owned a single Star Wars related toy, I was more of a tmnt and Aliens kind of kid :tophat
-
Nothing wrong sitting on a couch and getting fat, btw

being a nice laid back guy + being surrounded by yes men is a recipe for disaster. if he was a raging, domineering asshole, the prequels would've at least been...something.

This is going to kill you but my mom used to write Kenner and receive free replacement guns and lightsabers for me. Later on they stopped offering free replacements but you could order packs that had most of the stuff in there. Much like the equipment packs they used to sell for GI Joe.

and yet if he was a raging domineering asshole he wouldn't likely be giving away most of his star wars money to charity I'd imagine.
sucks about the shitty star wars movies though.
-
well yeah - more of a comment that it doesn't seem like he rules with an iron grip, yet he's surrounded by people that act like he does - a recipe for blah
i've always been pretty indifferent about them not being very good - my childhood felt very much unraped

Yeah, same here. I can still watch the Original Trilogy and enjoy it.

Where's our live action TV show ni gga? :maf :maf :maf :maf

i'm more impressed by poor people who still donate to charities even when they can't really afford it
lucas gives away half a billion, still has half a billion left, that's more along the lines of you or i dropping the register change into the march of dimes can

Seriously.

Nah, anyone can respect Lucas the man for doing the good public work he does. Only Manabyte can worship Lucas the modern-day director.

FTFA:
Clearly, Lucas has never forgotten Yoda's gnomic insight, "Always in motion is the future." He concludes, "As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt -- as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so."
Well, how can he forget it? Wasn't it his script? Or at least his movie?
I still boggle at what Return of the Jedi might have been if David Lynch had directed. But I guess he knew what GL was like in advance... Shit, GL has ruined actors. Liam Neeson quit movies, intending to never return. Nathalie Portman can act well, but not in anything by George. Hayden Christiansen is also good; watch Shattered Glass, he's great. It's GL's influence that diminishes them.
Nice about him throwing money at education though. God knows the US can use it.

I laughed. I feel kinda bad about it, but I laughed.

It wouldn't have been a David Lynch movie sadly even with him directing. The reason Lynch turned it down was because Lucas still maintained full creative control over it. His job would have been basically just to set up the cameras and little else. Lynch was wise to go with Dune instead probably.
