so, what's missing
-
Software is way down but then there wasn't much out. Is this only 3 weeks of data?
-
nice hardware for 360
-
360 sells more than double PS3. This is the best news ever. Shame about software but nothing good has been released at retail for awhile. Bring on Dead Rising 2! Watch it tank!
-
Eh, 360 will go down in a month
-
how do you know this? source?

But remember guys! The PS 3 has supply constraints!!

Sony wished they had this excuse now :lol

Tsc tsc
Shitty sales for all
-
The original Crackdown sold 427k units during its first month. No Halo beta will do that...
-
The Halo 3 beta no doubt helped Crackdown sell a shit ton out of the gate but it also had a pretty kick ass demo about a month prior to its release that got a lot of people stoked for it - myself included.
Crackdown 2 had fuck all. No beta and a fucking horrendous demo. Frankly I'm surprised it managed to sell as much as it did.

PS3: "It ony does everything. (But sell)".
:P

Oh please. 214k isn't bad.
Now the psp on the other hand :lol

Android PSP will save all

everything sucks
-
Meh, boring month aside from 360 dominating. DQ9, BlazBlue CS, and Crackdown 2 are the only noteworthy games I can think of released in July.
I'd guess BBCS did around 50-60k combined on PS3 & 360, with the PS3 version selling slightly more. :piss gamers
-
If only Nintendo had bothered to advertise Excitebots back in the day as much as it did DQ9. :'(
But yeah, they are very good at marketing games when they want to.

so, what's missing
ooh ohh i know!!! i know!

Starcraft?

Starcraft?

MW2 still sitting in the top 10 disgusts me.
Nice HW numbers. It's over for Wii.

MW2 still sitting in the top 10 disgusts me.
Arguably the best MP game since Counter-Strike IMO. The fact that it is still $60 is what is disgusting.
Please tell me which one of you bought an NCAA game so I can send a mailbomb to your house
Me and it's a blast. Better than Madden 10.
-
Good, then I can sell my copy while the value is high for Black Ops.
-
Nintendo must have spent like 50 million dollars marketing DQIX. At my mall there are giant DQIX ads everywhere like the ones you'd see for Inception and other big movies.
If DQIX doesn't do millions, I doubt they'll publish DQX.
-
Why is X360 selling so well atm? Were there really that many people waiting on a slim design to buy one?
-
Many people rebought one, judging by the software sales.
-
Starcraft?
Top selling game of the month.
:bow PC gaming :bow2

Ninty PR came out and they have now resort to using the "Family" moniker and combine both systems to make there sales look good :lol
Nintendo Sells More Than 650,000 Hardware Units in the U.S. in July
Nintendo sold more than 650,000 video game systems in July – more than any other company – according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks sales of video game products in the United States. The Nintendo DS™ family of systems sold nearly 400,000 in July, and Nintendo’s Wii™ console marked its 45th consecutive month of more than 250,000 units sold with July sales of nearly 254,000. These tallies bring the 2010 U.S. sales totals through the end of July for Nintendo DS to more than 3.4 million and Wii to more than 2.71 million.
Five of the top 10 best-selling games of July play on Nintendo systems. These include Super Mario Galaxy™ 2 for Wii at No. 4 with more than 192,000 sold, LEGO® Harry Potter™: Years 1-4 for Nintendo DS at No. 5 with nearly 142,000 sold, LEGO® Harry Potter™: Years 1-4 for Wii at No. 7 with more than 133,000 sold, DRAGON QUEST IX®: Sentinels of the Starry Skies™ for Nintendo DS at No. 8 with more than 132,000 sold and New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii at No. 9 with more than 128,000 sold.
Exclusive games for both Wii and Nintendo DS this fall and holiday season from both Nintendo and its third-party publishers demonstrate Nintendo’s commitment to provide unique game experiences that are only available on Nintendo platforms.
Some Wii-exclusive games on the horizon include Metroid™: Other M launching on Aug. 31, Samurai Warriors™ 3 on Sept. 27, Kirby’s Epic Yarn™ and Wii Party™ this fall, and Donkey Kong Country™ Returns, FlingSmash™ and PokéPark™ Wii: Pikachu’s Adventure for the holidays. Upcoming third-party Wii games include New Carnival Games® from 2K Play, NBA JAM from EA Sports, GoldenEye 007™ from Activision, Just Dance® 2 from Ubisoft, Disney Epic Mickey from Disney Interactive Studios and Sonic Colors™ from SEGA.
For the Nintendo DS family of systems, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future™ launches on Sept. 12, Pokémon Ranger™: Guardian Signs this fall and both Golden Sun™: Dark Dawn and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™: Mini-Land Mayhem for the holidays. Some top third-party games coming this fall include Super Scribblenauts™ from Warner Bros. and Rock Band® 3 from Electronic Arts/MTV.

it sold >132k this NPD and nfans are celebrating everywhere :lol
-
But if it was the case of X360 owners rebuying one, then you'd expect the sales spike to be in the first month and then disappear. The fact it's been selling like hotcakes for 2 months now makes it seem like the general public has been hooked on the X360 and it's the newest hot item like the Wii was.
-
Software sales aren't up though, so either they're getting new casuals or people are rebuying.

ive heard but this celebration is a bit much.
anyways good for them i guess.

Well 134 for a portable jrpg with no fanbase in the usa to speak of that went up for sale in the middle of the month that doesn't have the words final fantasy or pokemon on the cover is pretty solid.
It's all about perspective.
-
so what happened to the supposed boycott of SC2 for no LAN and such?
-
the same thing that happened with MW2 and the dedicated server decision.
-
the same thing that happened with MW2 and the dedicated server decision.
I figured as much, lol.
oh well
-
It sold 500k total. It couldn't sell 1million and it had an FF12 demo in it.
-
I'm not saying it isn't good. On the contrary. I'm just sayin' that DQ8 obviously wasn't enough to start a fanbase in the west like I thought based on the ds remake sales.
I think most people bought it for the demo.
134k is par for the course for a non-FF, non-KH, non-Pokemanz jrpg. Especially when you consider it's a portable rpg, and that it was released in the middle of the month and has had crazy word of mouth. I predict 300k lifetime sales.
-
I'm not interested in business.
-
PS3 had a good run.

People have been saying that since it launched at 599 :lol

Except those other non-FF, non-KH, non-Pokemanz jrpgs that sell like that don't have huge marketing budgets either :P
Not a big deal, just that I'm pretty sure after this DQ will be published/localized by SE like it was before this. This was basically Nintendo's chance to turn DQ into the next Pokemon and like their push for Monster Hunter in the US, it bumped a bit, but neither franchise became "american franchises" :american
-
NoA didnt advertise or publish Monster Hunter in America. Only NoE footed the bill in their part of the world and I think NCL did the original moneyhat.
edit:
I think we need to wait another month before we call Dragon Quest either way. Pokemon itself had very humble beginings until it exploded in popularity.
-
possibly committing suicide since Nintendo had to resort to the Nintendo Family line.

I still need to get DQIX...

didn't Borys had a theory on this?

Starcraft 2 did 721k...people are throwing that number in gaf thread
It doesn't include DD sales but i expect S2 sales to be heavily skewed towards retail.
Speaking of DD sales...things are moving,in UK at least
It's been a long time coming, but the UK will finally get a games download chart later this year, MCV can reveal.
ELSPA has been hard at work behind the scenes over the last 12 months convincing publishers to share data and bring clarity to the scope of PC downloads.
Firms large and small have backed the effort – Ubisoft, THQ, Square Enix, Sega, NCsoft, Midas, Mastertronic and Kalypso are all on board.
MCV understands it’s only a matter of time until their contemporaries go public with full support, too.
Sam Collins, ELSPA’s new commercial manager commented: “It is great to be working with members to build a report which will not only deliver member value, but one which will help the industry realise its potential in an increasingly connected digital economy.”
As with the retail reports, Chart-Track will be responsible for tallying the figures.
But unlike the traditional Chart-Track reports, the download chart will combine data that comes direct from publishers, not retailers.
All stakeholders have pledged to supply all sales data. Yes, even the numbers from popular sources like US developer Valve’s leading download service Steam. The site has otherwise been reluctant to align itself with any effort to share information directly.
The new digital chart will be a global first. No other territory has a similar combined list. An ELSPA working group is currently hammering out the finer details – with a target launch for November.
It’s a canny move for ELSPA. The organisation is poised to unveil its new UKIE identity and remit in September.ELSPA is also keen to get the many independent developers that publish directly to consumers via the web supporting the chart.
Chairman Andy Payne explained: “I am calling for other members to join the group as soon as they can and not miss out in helping to form and shape this important development for all of us.
“We are in the process of reaching out to TIGA and their membership and hope to have more on that very soon.”

But remember guys! The PS 3 has supply constraints!!
yes, but if you look at it long term, PS3 is still on track to claim 2nd place in 2076.
Xbots won't be gloating in 66 years time, i'm calling it now.
(how long till we get the "Who cares?! PS4 is going to destroy X1080 anyways. We all knew the PS3 was crap!")
The minute PS4 is revealed?
The PS3 is a demand constrained loser. Sony losing $5+ billion on the thing will probably go down as the worst corporate video game industry debacle since ET on 2600.
-
Wow, DQ9 charted.

I'm surprised Lego HP did so bad.
I think this gen is so stratified that games like that suffer on the HD consoles. The Wii is the "kids" console so it can sell alright there but everywhere else those sort of franchises struggle now. Of course its also summer and that has something to do with it. Probably should have been a fall release when parents are actively looking to buy their kids games.
-
There's so dang many Lego games out now, a bunch of them are still on store shelves and much cheaper to boot. I'm guessing that's how Lego Batman eventually sold so damn much is through a long tail.
-
I have, and enjoy, all the other Lego games. Lego Harry Potter not so much....my kids weren't even interested.
-
Why do we care about lego harry potter?
-
No halo 3 beta included = crackdown sales :-\
should've put a reach beta in.
-
Crackdown 2 did horrible compared to the original. Could be the lack of a Halo beta code that made it sell less. Or maybe it's just a shitty game.
I think its a combination of both factors.
-
yeah, the game sucks so I can't say I feel bad for it.
-
No halo 3 beta included = crackdown sales :-\

Two reach betas? You forgot ODST...
-
The Halo 3 beta came out 6 months after Crackdown did. There was no reason to buy day one for it.
-

I think its a combination of both factors.
Crackdown came out before GTA4, Prototype, Infamous, Red Dead, etc.
Crackdown 2 failed to be the next step for the genre and I think since there was no word of mouth, the game died.
Crackdown is one of my favorite sandbox games of this gen so far. I still can't believe how disappointing Crackdown 2 turned out to be. No surprises (except the annoying orbs that floated away once you neared then), no better graphics, the city stayed the same etc etc. They really messed it up, big time.
It's like they re-released the original and added more shitty things to it.
-
:derp no bounds :derp
I lol'd
-
I kinda expected more out of DQ9 honestly :( Oh well. None of the games I like will ever be popular in the US I guess...
-
Blazblue :'(
-
lol fighting games

ITT nerds sperging over numbers that make no difference in the real world.
Even though I am a 360 primary gamer I am still glad Sony sold alot of consoles and almost defeated Nintendo. Microsoft did good too and makes me glad to be a Xbox fan!
-
No one cares about the numbers. We just like to mock idiots like you by pretending we do.
-
I care about the numbers!
Wait, I never get the numbers I want anymore.
:fbm
-
Blazblue :'(
Didn't this come out on the last day of the month or something?
But yeah, for whatever reason 2d fighters sell pretty bad in the west. It goes like 2 million SF4 players, 2 million Soul Calibur players, 500k Tekken players, 50k every other fighter.
-
I'm more surprised that Aksys is presumably turning a profit on all the Arc System Works games they localize. For a fighting game developer, their games have a ton of text and voice work, so it can't be an easy undertaking.
-
I'm highly pleased that Aksys is still around and is doing stuff, but their continued existence baffles me. As far as I know, they haven't had even a Atlus-sized hit in their entire history.
Still, glad to have them around, however they make ends meet (I'm guessing their interns turn tricks on the side or something).
-
Crackdown 2 did horrible compared to the original. Could be the lack of a Halo beta code that made it sell less. Or maybe it's just a shitty game.
I think its a combination of both factors.
Most people bought Crackdown for the Halo 3 MP Beta, fer shure. Then they were pleasantly surprised. The demo was also pretty tight.
As you say, in contrast Crackdown 2 has neither an impressive demo, nor a compelling pack-in. I was a huge fan of the original, but I couldn't commit to a 60 purchase for something that felt like more of the same. I'll buy it at some point, just not immediately.

Some more data...copied from gaf...source major Nelson podcast,Aaron Greenberg
In an interview with Major Nelson this weekend Aaron Greenberg mentioned MW2 360 was at 127k. Not sure if that number had been filled in on the list yet. He gave latest attach rates for PS3(7.3) and Wii (6.8 ) as well. He gave total consumer spend at retail of $290 million for 360(in the PR earlier), for PS3 $181 million, and Wii $173 million. I believe he said $52 million of the 360 total was accessories sales (he says to date at the end of the convo, but then compares it to the $124 million SW total for the month) with the rest being pretty evenly split between SW and HW. $32 is the average cost per accessory. Internally they believe August should be pretty strong as well. Also says he has seen Reach pre-order numbers to date and they are outpacing MW2.
-
Can't wait for the NPD after Natal and Move get released. Should be interesting.
Nintendo is probably going to do another pricedrop for the Wii.
-
Some nice data from gamasutra
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6027/npd_behind_the_numbers_july_2010.php (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6027/npd_behind_the_numbers_july_2010.php)
Average system price
Wii
The average price of the system has declined from just under $220 in September 2009 to just over $200 in February 2010 and has finally settled in just under $200 as of July.
Even more alarming for Nintendo, however, is that software sales for the system have declined more than 20% so far this year compared to the same seven month period in 2009. As we saw last month, almost all of the decline has come from third-party Wii software.
DS
This platform now consists of three systems: the Nintendo DS Lite, the Nintendo DSi, and the Nintendo DSi XL. According to pricing data provided exclusively to Gamasutra, the system's price has risen yet again.
Six months ago the system had an average price of just over $150, indicating that the Lite and original DSi model were selling approximately the same units each month. The average price now stands at over $165, more than $15 more than the launch price of the original Nintendo DS back in November 2004.
We believe that this dramatic rise in the average price can be attributed directly to the introduction of the $190 DSi XL and a sharp decline in the popularity of the Lite model.
PS3
In September 2009, the average price of the system was right at $300, the price of the PS3 Slim 120GB system then available. (The figure below shows the growth of the system's YTD sales.)
As the $350 model (with a 250GB hard drive) came along, the average price rose to just over $315 in February of this year. In July, however, that average price had fallen to right around $308.
360 situation is more complicated, estimates bellow
Using average hardware sales prices for July 2010 provided by the NPD Group, some modest linear modeling, and our own instincts about the market based on experience, we have arrived at the estimates provided below. We hasten to stress that these estimates are ours alone, and the actual figures shown in the full NPD Group report may differ.
We have made a few assumptions about the hardware models on the market, and the prices at which they were being sold. In particular, we assumed that the Xbox 360 market consisted of three models (legacy Arcade and Elite models, at $150 and $250, respectively, along with the 250GB Xbox 360 S model at $300). Moreover, the PSP Go has seen enough discounts at retailers like Amazon, Dell, and Wal-mart in recent months to make us break the PSP category up into three prices rather than models. (As of this writing, the PSP Go is available for $200 from Amazon and Wal-mart.)
Caveats aside, our figure below reveals that the leading hardware model for the month of July 2010 was actually the Xbox 360 S model, followed closely by the Nintendo Wii.

That's interesting. I can't believe DS' transaction price.

This will save PSP:
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Sony-PSP-ad-takes-aim-at-the-iPhone-as-a-gaming-device-article-a_12805.html
Nothing can save it.
One other thing, see the huge difference between $200 model and $250 model...$50 is not much, that tells that people consider $250 model to be totally inferior to $170,$200 models.
There is no need to see the specs, market has spoken
