COLOGNE, Germany — Aug. 17, 2009 — On the eve of gamescom 2010, the world’s largest consumer-oriented games showcase, Microsoft Corp. unveiled the newest addition to the famed “Age of Empires” franchise, “Age of Empires Online.” Microsoft also announced the development of “Microsoft Flight,” a new entry inspired by the best-selling “Microsoft Flight Simulator” franchise. Published by Microsoft Game Studios, these new titles, along with the previously announced “Fable III,” fully integrate the free* Games for Windows – LIVE online service to deliver compelling socially connected gameplay experiences.

“Today, we’re bringing powerful, inventive gaming experiences to the Windows-based PC,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. “Over the years, our PC heritage captured the hearts and minds of millions of players. Reinventing these iconic franchises with social, shared experiences at their core marks the beginning of our return to PC gaming in bold new ways.”

“Age of Empires” for a New Era

This could either be awesomely amazing or a horrible mess

Can your civilization be annihilated while you're away lol. Could make for some epic trolling

Probably will be more like a captial city hub and then you go out and "quest" or something.

If not then it certainly has some awesome griefing possibilities

Age of Empires wasn't my favorite RTS. That would be Rise of Nations. But it was one of the few in that genre I enjoyed. Glad to see this.

Hell yes! Rise of Nations was amazing. The sequel wasn't as good though. :(

Beta sign-up? Sweet.

AoE is the type of rts that should have been up my alley. I like the ability to build walls and create an actual kingdom, but the gameplay/units didn't appeal to me; I like a more rapid pace ala StarCraft. Definitely going to check this out.

I hate to say it, but this could be really cool on the Wii as well, if Nintendo's online system was better

How in the world can this possibly be balanced? It's bad enough playing out the string on a 1vs1 RTS game in which you are outclassed; how do they make this appealing to newbs when they are up against hundreds of experienced enemies, ganging up on them? Gonna be tough.

Spend $$$ to buy advantages.  It works for League of Legends.  :teehee

The only advantage you can spend real cash on in League of Legends are experience boosts and point boosts that allow you to buy champions.

I'm expecting it wont be versus (at least not for everyone), but there will be co-op maps or something.

Oh, I know, but considering how slow IP gain is the game certainly nudges you to spend real money.  I've played about 50 games and I only own 4 heroes and barely have enough points for another 3150 hero.  I wouldn't be surprised if AoEO has the same type of model where you can earn everything, but it takes dozens of hours to accomplish that and spending money expedites the process.

Looks hot, wish they would do an offline version with this style, I'm not really a big fan of online strategy games.

So technically you could play, go to sleep, and wake up to your empire being in ruins due to the mmo aspect?

Post by: MrAngryFace on August 23, 2011, 12:02:50 AM
that I dunno- so far ive just been dicking around with single player; I paid in 20 for the egypt civ so I can do ranked stuff but im not sure how it works right now; I suspect its more like there's a world map people fight over, but the cities are not considered part of that. Is that mmo thing even rolled out yet?
