Title: Hands on (or rather, off) with the Kinect
Post by: Saint Cornelius on August 18, 2010, 12:20:16 PM
So as I was waiting to go see Scott Pilgrim last weekend, I cruised around San Diego's fabulous Fashion Valley Mall for a bit. They actually have a fucking MICROSOFT STORE there, just down the way from the Apple Store. Lo and behold, there was a gentleman doing Kinect demos for the rabid crowd.

I'm joking about the "rabid crowd" part. There wasn't very many people involved, and those that were didn't seem to be having much fun. The poor guy doing the demo looked like he was going to cry. The embarrassment level was so high that I just had to bail.

Would anyone be interested in me going back and trying it out? I could go right when the mall opens so that I won't die from embarrassment.

Yeah, I'd like to read some real impressions.
The media has been too positive about it while gamers react lukewarm towards Kinect. Something reeks.

I think it would be a good test run for the video capabilities of my new iPhone4...  :hyper

I'd try it if I saw it in a store.  I heard on giantbomb recently that you need like 10 to 13 feet for it to track your body and I don't have that much room where I play my games, at least not without moving the couch away.

Of course nobody is there. Why would anyone go to the Microsoft store? They breakout into showtunes and shit.

What was really weird to me is how much of a carbon copy their storefront is of the Apple Store. Except instead of everything being white, it was wood-paneled. (Now that I've watched this video, I don't know where I got 'wood-paneled' from)

Kind of like what they did with their OS, from Windows '95 onward. So much of their UI comes from Apple's consistently one-step earlier examples.

I can see it, pretty easily. Linux peeps have their penguin, Appleheads have that whole aesthetic and the logo to display... the MS fans feel left out. I have met a couple people who wanted the Windows four-tone flag logo on a hat or T-shirt. Fifteen years ago, I met one guy who would have camped at MS' Redmond campus to encourage them to open a store like this. Which, ironically, would have predated the Apple Store.

I gave Sceneman a pretty scene lookin baggy white DOS T-shirt with the DOS logo in neon, I got it at a local dev meetup.
