Title: M$ announces: "Game Feast"
Post by: The Sceneman on August 31, 2010, 06:34:29 PM
Unbelievable. Awful title, it's basically Summer of Arcade part deux, AKA. Microsoft's excuse to charge 1200 points for every damn XBLA game. How did this happen to us.

Line up:

•September 29: Hydrophobia – 1200 Microsoft Points
•October 6: Comic Jumper – 1200 Microsoft Points
•October 13: Pinball FX 2 – Tables purchased individually, free import from original Pinball FX
•October 20: Super Meat Boy – Pricing TBD

Comic Jumper is a day 1 for me.

Will probably buy all of these when they're 800 points.

BUT

Am buying:
GUWANGE
BANGAI-O

day 1 @ $15 each

What? Free import from original Pinball FX?  Someone explain that to me.

they're overhauling the graphics and updating the physics engine on all the previous tables, if you bought the first (or any table packs) you can upgrade and import them for free into PFX2

Just a few more quality games from someone other than Cave and it really will dethrone the Saturn. :rock

They all look pretty cool. Solid lineup but it's a weird title to brand this latest batch of releases with,

Agreed. All the games seem fine to me. But "Game Feast" is the worst name ever. Shitty ms marketing dept.

they could have called it something as useless as "Month of Good Games" and it still would have been better than Game Feast.

You're still paying 800pts for Space Invaders Infinity Gene though.  I think I bought that for 99 cents on the app store.
Title: Re: M$ announces: "Game Feast"
Post by: Stoney Mason on September 07, 2010, 10:24:57 PM
Why are they overpriced, though?

Games are $15 bucks on the service now. People need to get over it. If they don't want to spend $15 on those games. Then that's cool. But complaining about it is like complaining about $60 dollar retail games. It is what it is. If you don't want it at that price then wait for the inevitable sale way down the road.

Anyone seen the new Enslaved footage?  It's the game developed by the guys over at Ninja Theory.  XBLA and PSN this October.  Looks amazing.

Oh for fucks sake.  I don't know why I thought this was a XBLA/PSN game.  Nevermind.

Still looks awesome though...

I'm day 1 for Comic Jumper because I've been hot for the game since it was announced. A shame Hydrophobia is releasing around tons of big ass blockbusters (Halo et al), as I might've picked it up during a quieter period.

When N+ came out for 800 points everyone bitched that N was free.
Title: Re: M$ announces: "Game Feast"
Post by: chronovore on September 22, 2010, 12:43:54 AM
N+ was plenty of fun, but it basically requires me to start playing from the beginning every single time to refresh my muscle memory on the controls.  :-\ I got to the stage with the missiles, tried it a dozen times, got incrementally further each time, and put it aside for something that didn't feel like stapling my sac to plywood.

Deathspank is a lot of fun, though it appears to have a demographic of the subset of "people who like Ron Gilbert" and "people who haven't already played too much Diablo." I'm in that subset.
Title: Re: M$ announces: "Game Feast"
Post by: Bebpo on September 22, 2010, 12:47:08 AM
I'll buy Deathspank when they either port it to PC or do a bundle deal on the consoles for both games at 1 price.  I thought the demo was funny even if the gameplay was kind of hmmm
Title: Re: M$ announces: "Game Feast"
Post by: chronovore on September 22, 2010, 05:00:56 AM
Yeah, honestly the gameplay didn't wow me either, but I liked the humor, laughed out loud a bit, and loved the art style.

Sceneman hated the humor, it just rubbed him the wrong way. Apparently not enough fart jokes and, if you can believe it, NOT ENOUGH BACON.

What's new about Deathspank 2?

The deuce suffixed to its moniker! Clearly all is new and good.

I dunno, probably not much. I'm not even thinking of buying it until I finish the first, and I've been balls-deep in Red Dead Redemption lately, so it's unlikely to be soon. Also heard that Mr. Gilbert is not doing the writing chores for 2. I also bought Hothead's Penny-Arcade episode 1, and never bought 2. I may do the same here.

I thought the Game Room Packs are free, but purchasing individual games from within them costs points, right? It's another grey area where MS has ignored their own software architecture. It is probably not possible to track those purchases in line with the other Game Add-On items.

As much as I am not going to be purchasing this penis-stompingly hard game, I think this pricing model is great for XBLA. I see a lot of iPhone games move really well by offering an earlybird discount. It's got to be smarter than putting potential customers into a "wait and see" state by offering frequent and unannounced discount periods. I always feel bad when I see something for sale shortly after I've paid full price.

Super Meat Boy will also have some free DLC

Quote
The free downloadable chapter for the Xbox Live Arcade version of rock hard 2D platformer Super Meat Boy is a "f**k you" to the system of paying for DLC, the developer has said.

The Xbox-exclusive chapters, part of The Internets package, will be free to download because of what's called Title Managed Storage (TMS), a Microsoft feature that allows developers to add new chapters to games whenever they feel like it.

"In a world where it costs $2 to unlock content in a game that you've already purchased it is nice to have the power to totally say f**k you to that system and go our own way," said Team Meat on its site

"As we upload content there are no micro transactions to play new chapters and we can basically do whatever we want with these chapters and it costs you, our adoring fans, nothing. We love you."

Super Meat Boy launches on 20th October on XBLA. Team Meat – made up of developers Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes - is yet to announce a release date for the free DLC, but did share some details.

"Each internets chapter contains 20 levels and can be tailored to allow all characters to play them, or lock in a specific character allowing us to create levels that only certain characters can defeat using their special abilities."

Team Meat also explained the DLC's Xbox 360 exlcusivity.

"Before we all start to bitch and moan about this, know that in order for the game to come out on XBLA, we had to offer something exclusive and this was the best and coolest option for us," said the tiny studio.

"Also, quite frankly, Title Managed Storage on Xbox Live took all of the difficult parts of getting this system up and running out of my hands. It literally took me a week to implement the Internets Chapter fully, that's a huge deal for what it is."

So there you go.
Title: Re: M$ announces: "Game Feast"
Post by: chronovore on October 19, 2010, 11:01:57 AM
Yeah, the Title Managed Storage stuff may be what allowed them to "end run" around the for-pay DLC model that Valve is fond of complaining about, but it's not like Microsoft said "WHAT? You're using Title Managed Storage to give away stuff for free? FORFEND! PRITHEE GIVE UP THIS MADNESS!" -- this is what TMS is for, and they're using it in accord with the design. It's just that it's not applicable to the kind of DLC Valve wants to offer. Or Epic. Or so many others, I'm guessing.

apparently because the temp drop to 800 is considered a deal on its own, it doesn't count towards the spend 2400, get 800 deal.  but I can't really find a reason to complain about that.

Huh? 800 pts. is 800 pts. how can they rationalize that?

someone on gaf pointed out that the xbox deal says it "cannot be combined with any other offer" and technically the Meatboy sale is an offer.  I think this is all assumptions for now and it might turn out to be false.

No, I'm pretty sure it still counts.

Meat Boy looks interesting but I hate that whole "zany internetzzzz" style of humor that it seems to be infected with.  Almost puts me off entirely from buying the game.

Meat Boy is out. The SF2 spoof opening already cements this game as XBLA GotY

Now that "Game Feast" is over we can now say that it had an even shittier line-up than all the Summers of Arcades. Can we? One great game. Just one

Is Shank worth getting? I played the demo last night, and it seemed smooth and fun for a brawler but maybe a bit mashy? It sure is pretty.

I've heard it gets repetitive real quick.

Well, poop on that, then.
1200 for Costume Quest
800 for RDR: Undead Nightmare

...it would have been an easy 440 for The Rocky Horror Picture Show Pack for Guitar Hero, except I own GH2, GH3, GH5, and Band Hero, but apparently this will only work with GH: Warriors of Rock. LAAAAAAME. Kotick's dense and unfathomable DLC fortress will remain unviolated by my points.

Will prolly scope some Rock Band tracks when I get home.
