In a press conference just now, Dove World Outreach Center pastor Terry Jones announced that he will not burn Korans on Saturday.
Jones said he agreed to cancel "Burn A Koran Day" in exchange for Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf agreeing to move the proposed Islamic center further away from Ground Zero. Jones claimed Rauf said he will move the center.
Jones appeared with Imam Muhammad Musri from the Islamic Society of Central Florida, who has been meeting with Jones over the past two days to convince him not to burn Korans.
The two said they are flying to New York on Saturday, Sept. 11, to met with Rauf.
Several news outlets are reporting that Rauf has denied that he agreed to move the Islamic center.

If this is true I'm seriously, seriously disappointed. It's a fucking shame the mosque is even being compared to the burning of a Koran, and I can't believe the Iman would even agree to such equivalency.
Although it does show the Iman is a bigger man, but still. Principle.
edit: wait, the pastor is lying? Thank god
Several news outlets are now reporting that the Park51 folks say there is no deal with Florida pastor Terry Jones to move the "Ground Zero Mosque" farther away from the World Trade Center site.

Our country seems to be entering that stupid zone we were in for a few years after 9/11.

This pastor has officially reached Epic Troll status. Fuck this guy :lol

We'll have more shortly, but if you listened closely to the Central Florida imam who appeared with Jones at his press conference a short time ago, he only spoke of having arranged a meeting in NYC with Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the public face of the Park51 project. The Florida imam didn't mention a deal to move the GZM.

Our country seems to be entering that stupid zone we were in for a few years after 9/11.
I think it's worse. Post 9/11, it seems to me Bush clearly said Islamophobia was a no-go, and apparently, since he was conservative, the right fell in line.
But now that an Islamofascistcommiehippie is president, the right has no need to heed calls for tolerance.

I hope Obama spends 911 at a mosque. Fuck this shit.
-
i say we encourage the guy then have our boys kill everyone that pokes out their head because of it
-
How this gets spun in the media is already apparent:
"Did Obama Go Back on His word?"
More like.

Also, the Westboro Baptist church was right!
Westboro, for whatever it's worth, doesn't feel the same way about Jones. Shirley Phelps Roper, a leader of the church, told the Kansas City Star this week that Koran-burning is old hat, something her church did "a long time before this guy." Besides, she said, he won't go through with it.

My right-leaning mom blames Obama for this whole mess for "telling this guy not to do it" and "creating this whole media mess when the government started saying it was a bad idea." :lol
Oh, Obama! :wag

This might be the weirdest story I've seen in years.
Per CNN, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf released a statement saying he has not spoken to Terry Jones or an Orlando imam that was talking with Koran.
"I am glad that Pastor Jones has decided not to burn any Qurans. However, I have not spoken to Pastor Jones or Imam Musri. I am surprised by their announcement. We are not going to to with our religion or any other. Nor are we going to barter. We are here to extend our hands to build peace and harmony."
Musri had told CNN he spoke to Rauf's wife, Daisy Khan. Rauf did not mention the meeting in his statement.
The Pentagon is confirming to several outlets that Defense Secretary Robert Gates called Terry Jones personally to ask him not to burn Korans, for the sake of American troops.
-
Too bad SNL isn't on, this would make for a great sketch. The guy playing Jones would announce he is no longer burning Korans and then a string of ridiculous announcements ("Obama will finally show his birth certificate! Lady Gaga will admit she has a penis! Albert Haynesworth has been traded to the Cowboys!").
-
Burning the Qur'an was only ever going to cause trouble and this guy knew it. Good thing he finally backed down, but this never should have come up to begin with.
-
The pastor is only looking for attention that's all guys " Media whore "
-
So I guess I'm the only one offended by the fact that the Obama administration strong armed this guy into suppressing his first amendment rights?
-
:drudge Obama bribed Koran burning pastor with cabinet job :drudge

It honestly shouldn't have been this big a story. Says something about our society and our media when we start overly discussing idiots and jackballs.

I dunno, back then all the usual suspects in the media were harping on about the need for racial profiling in airport security.

I know that. But if there are no coverage and buzz about it, it won't reach the same level of attention right now and no one will ever heard about the pastor and his intentions. So the whole thing is a joke especially when you watch Fox News with all the smarty ass comments and the way they twist every fact into their way to make you feel that is Obama and his ppl are behind it.

What a pussy.

Why does David Bowie's wife have the authority to move the mosque?

I'd say "because she's fucking David Bowie" but we all know that shit ain't happenin.

Nah, it's all good. Nailing Iman doesn't make him straight, just like a couple bros enjoying each others bodies doesn't make them gay.
Plus I found out recently (from here?) that Freddie Mercury was bi, so anything's possible.

lol imam my bad
According to the AP, pastor Terry Jones says his Koran burning is suspended, but not canceled, after finding out a New York City imam did not agree to move his Islamic center further from Ground Zero.
Jones told reporters that a different imam from Orlando, who was trying to convince Jones not to burn a stack of Korans on Sept. 11, "clearly, clearly lied to us."
This afternoon, Jones said he would cancel the Koran burning because Park51's imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf, had agreed to move the Islamic center.
The Orlando imam, Muhammad Musri, only said Rauf had agreed to meet with him and Jones. He told CNN he spoke with Rauf's wife, Daisy Khan.
But Rauf released a statement soon after saying he was "surprised" and that he never agreed to move the center.
Even if Jones does cancel the burning it may not matter. Fellow fringers the Westboro Baptist Church -- which has burned Korans in the past to little fanfare -- now say they'll burn the Muslim holy book, and the American flag, on Saturday.

Could he go one further and say "actually, let's just kill all Muslims. I advise you to do so tonight. They are scum after all"
Unless it's a direct threat and the violence is "imminent", yes.
-
yelling fire in a crowded theater rule, so no
you can certainly offend people and their religion freely, though, as long as you do not propose to (or incite) harm them

From what I understand, if you call someone up and say "Hey, I'm coming over to your house right now to KILL YOU." then it would definitely NOT be protected speech, but if you said something like "One of these days I'm gonna get real drunk, look you up, and KILL YOU." then it's a bit more grey since the threat isn't immediate. But that's just what I got from reading the "hate speech" entry at Wikipedia.

you're right, but he said "i advise you to do so tonight," so i would guess (citation needed) that would constitute incitement
