Michael Piller died in 2005, but before he did he was planning on releasing a book about the writing of Star Trek: Insurrection but Paramount banned it from release. It was unfinished, but it's online now here:

The book shows how the movie went from possibly awesome to Berman tampered SHIT.

Wow, neat find.
I just finished watching TNG finally. I was a huge fan in college, but never finished the last season because I was living in Japan with no access to it. I finally borrowed a co-worker's discs (they're CRAZY expensive here) and ripped them to MP4 and watched them on my iPod. It is such a great series, even now. Too bad about NEMESIS.

Read up just past the initial pitch for the movie.
I really like the idea. A star trek heart of darkness with a twist. That could have made for a damn good trek film.
-
Yea. The movie sounded so much better when the Romulans were the villains too. The half-Romulan, half-Klingon villain would've given Worf something to do other than be the butt of the jokes. There was also a very cool Data story arc at one point.
Stupid fucking Berman.

Aside from First Contact, the TNG were movies were such a wasted opportunity.
-
This would've been cool:
Riker comes looking for Data in the same holodeck program he was in when we first met him in “Encounter at Farpoint.” He is meditating about existence much the same way as he was in that first episode. (Die hard fans will see the parallels to the original scene; newcomers won’t know the difference.) Riker has been worried about the way Data has been acting lately. He wants Data to come back and join the poker game - he’s been a no-show for weeks. But Data declines, melancholy. He explains he is no longer able to bluff. Ironically, I used to be the best poker player on the ship. Now, I have the emotions I always longed for but I can’t play poker any more. Riker: You’ll learn, Data. It’s part of your evolution as a lifeform. Data nods as though he’s considered it. Do you think, he asks Riker, that Pinnochio ever missed being a puppet after the story ended?

Trek had fallen into a rut and a lot of bad habits that were impossible to break out of. Normally I'm not a fan of constant reboots but Trek was a franchise that badly needed one.

Oh wow. Patrick Stewart's first letter was oddly prophetic:
what I have read would have hardly composed a moderately interesting episode somewhere in the middle of season five of TNG.
-
The best ST movie is the one with Malcolm McDowell, real talk.

the best star trek movie is galaxy quest

Sounds like the writing from Alan Wake... lol. Read it in his voice

We have removed Michael Piller's manuscript for the writing of ST Insurrection at the request of the family.
Crap, somebody please put this on Megaupload or something.

Stewart may have nailed the criticism, but I think his input made the movie worse and closer to that observation.
-
All of the TNG movies are little boutique pieces playing to Spiner and Stewart's egos. It's super sad they didn't realize they could make an ensemble piece and please more fans.
And then there's NEMESIS, which pleases no-one.
None of the movies are better than the best episodes of the TV series, which is really sad. Yesterday's Enterprise, All Good Things, Below Decks... these are a few of my favorite things...

This.
One of the biggest problems with the movie was how Stewart and Brent Spiner's characters dominated the movies and the poor choices made with them.

Fail for no mention of Inner Light.

That episode was only awesome because I watched it before reading 1984.
David Warner was awesome as a Cardassian.
Okay, it was awesome because of this as well.
David Warner played great Star Trek characters. :bow2
Him and the guy who played Weyoun and Brunt. :bow2

I know this guy gets enough praise as it is, and I have watched that review before, but:

Admiral Bitchayev. :lol

Insurrection was still the best TNG movie though. Because it was just like an average episode of the series.

It's a fair court. I'll accept that judgment.

No.
Sorry, I don't go to TNG for Borg action setpieces and shit.
